I have this problem as well, didn't happen till about 8 years ago. So, I take it from that eariler post that its due to an alleries to bananas? Wonder if taking some kind of allergey medicine would help get rid of stomach pain?

I had been eating protein smoothies every morning for 7 months straight. Every morning, and every one contained a banana and protein powder. The other ingredients would change daily. I took a week off from working out and eating smoothies. That week of getting back on the horse...it was like clockwork. About 30 mins after drinking my smoothie at work, I was doubled over in pain. I thought it was the new whey protein powder I was using, so switched back to Soy, and then I was worse. Fast forward 2 weeks, I tried a smoothie today, minus the protein powder, and here I sit with the same cramps in my upper abdomen, feeling flushed and just overall icky. I jumped online to see if there was such thing as sudden intolerance to banana, and sure enough. Even after eating eggs lately I feel yucky. Not as bad as I do with the raw banana. This stinks, but I am glad to finally understand what is going on. BTW, I am a 38 year old female, and have eaten bananas my whole life. Not daily like I have the past 7 months, but never an issue before.

... that may explain why it doesnt seem to 'spring up' as an allergy in people until they get to their twenties. ive been having trouble with an acidic stomach as well since ive been working long hours especially... been trying lemon water to calm it a bit as its alkalizing in your stomach apprently. ate an organic banana and they want us in on saturday tomorrow. thought it would be better but ate it on an empty stomach and then put dinner on top . pain and sick feeling now..

I get bad bellyaches after eating bananas too if they are not totally ripe. THe pretty yellow bananas are not always ripe and I finally out the non ripe ones are what hurt my belly. I guess it's kind of like the classic green apple bellyache only it's bananas.
If I eat a non speckled banana, I get a really bad pain in my tummy and usually stomach cramps that last anywhere from one hour to three.

If you look up the fodmap diet you will note that they suggest only ripe bananas.

OMG! I'm not crazy then. I"ve been up for more than 3 hours now with bloating, stomach cramps and radiating pains just below the diagphragm and mid back. I did eat a somewhat green banana while cooking dinner because I was hungry and thought that would hold me. I didn't start feeling the bloatedness until an hour later just before we sat down to eat. Not surprisingly I didn't eat very much because I was starting to feel very uncomfortble. The stomach cramps didn't start until just before I went to bed which was 4 hours after dinner; by then my stomach was distended. Slept for a few hours before waking up feeling just horrible!!! I've never had problems with bananas until now. No more green ones for me!

I ate my last banana when I was 17 - I am now 50 - it is not worth the pain.
After having my second child (aged 30) I started having serious problems. Relentless pain and bloating, severe back pain that went on for hours on end. Whole days of pain that brought me to my knees. I went to the Doctor and was referred to a dietitian but nothing was conclusive. I was eventually diagnosed with IBS - which has to be the most unhelpful diagnosis ever.
Out of desperation I went on a starch free diet, which helped, but Oh boy what a huge food group that is, I could hardly eat anything. I have a friend who is a coeliac and her symptoms were nothing like mine, but eventually I tried a wheat free diet cos there was nothing else left to try. OMG I WAS CURED!
What prompted me to google the banana thing was, at work today I was chatting to a customer who mentioned that her mother was wheat intolerant and also had a problem with bananas. I don't understand the science of it but it seems there must be some connection.

Bananas contain two problematic molecules: histamine (or other amines) that cause various intolerance symptoms (like the cramping pains) and they contain resistant starch which some people (like myself) can't digest and which is then consumed by intestinal bugs to make lots of gas. The pain comes from gases being formed in your intestine at the same time that it is being cramped and constricted by amines. Histamine intolerance can be eased by anti-histamines (they block histamine but don't eliminate it) and by diamine oxidase enzyme (which we are all supposed to have in our gut, but which can be overwhelmed by high levels of histamine/other amines). I have read that histamine also blocks the action of amylase, which digests starch. Recently I bought some amylase, and found that it can ease the pain of banana consumption, either because it takes out the starch or the histamine, or both).

Hi everyone! I'm new to all this forum stuff, but I decided to search for people with banana allergies, I have always had an intolerance to banana's which for me irritates my throat, make me cough when they are too riped, so normally they would have to be almost green for me to eat one, but I ate one this morning which was quite yellow still and within a few minutes I had stomach cramps and diarrhoea, does this mean I shouldn't eat them anymore? I was fine until I ate that.
