Hi! I am pregnant and entering my third trimester soon. My OB wants me to come in for a glucose tolerance test to test for gestational diabetes. I have read that this involved drinking a large amount of pure glucose on an empty stomach and then having blood tests done. Is this really necessary? Are there no other ways of ruling out gestational diabetes before this test? After all, nobody would consume such high amounts of sugar any way, so I am thinking this could be one of those tests that could easily come up with a false positive, which would be going down a slippery slope of unwanted medical interventions.
Thanks for your help.
