I have been taking lexapro for years but when I started taking the generic escitalopram, my hair started falling out by the hand full !

Hi, I took Lexapro for about 5 months and lost a lot of hair as well. The shedding continued for several months after I stopped taking Lexapro. My hairline also started to recede with very noticeable hair loss at the temples. It's been more than a year since I stopped the Lexapro and my hair has started filling back in. It takes awhile, but it'll grow back.

I was on lexapro for 7 months.  It wasn't until the sixth month that my stylist began washing my hair and it was coming out in clumps, and only in the center.  This was in May.  I eventually told her to cut it all because it looked horrible.  Now I'm wearing a wig.  My hairline receded as well.  I'm 56 and was looking 46.  With my hair loss and without the wig I look 66.  Lexapro caused more depression and anxiety than it was worth.  I took myself off immediately.  I hope it grows back.  H

How long did it take for your hair to grow back after going off of the Lexapro? And how long total time did you take the Lexapro? I took Lexapro for 10 years and reduced dosage from 10 mg to 5 mg in Feb 2013 and completely stopped it on July 25, 2014. I switched to 12.5 mg Trazadone on July 25, 2014 and then stopped the Trazadone on Sept. 10, 2014. My hair loss almost doubled with the Trazadone. I started taking Xanax .25 mg after quitting the Trazadone on Sept 10. I have finally started sleeping anywhere from 6 1/2 to up to 8 hrs per night with the Xanax. But I continue to lose hair. Just as much hair and am hoping the hair loss will eventually stop. I probably have only about half the hair I had before I started the Lexapro. How long did it take for your hair to start growing back after stopping the Lexapro?

Hasn't grown in yet. Still a work in progress. It's not as fragile as 2 months ago

Thank you so very much for the reassurance that hair grows back. I am experiencing hair loss and am completely stressed out by this! Would you please tell me how long it took for your hair to grow back? Blessings

I was on 30 mg of Lexapro a day for 3 months (I started at 10mg, then 20, etc.). Did NOTHING for my depression and anxiety but my hair starting falling out to the max! Every time I would wash it my comb would have tons of hair on it!! I also had irregular heartbeats and nightmares with thoughts of suicide. I weaned myself OFF it and all side effects went away yet my psych still insists that the hair loss could NOT have been caused by the Lexapro! So frustrating when I know damn well that it was! Nothing else had changed in my diet or prescriptions except adding Lexapro....so yeah, why our Doctors so unwilling to believe it's the Lexapro????

Hi! I was on Lexapro for a few years and weaned myself for only a month. I noticed small hair changes while on the drug but bigger changes with hair loss when I got off of it. The dermatologist said it should be only temporary, lasting 4-6 months. i feel certain it's due to lexipro since it's the only changes I've made. I'm still losing hair but also seeing new hair growth. All kind of odd. Hoping things normalize soon. Oh, and I'm not sure if I weaned properly but I started cutting my lexapro in half every so many days (a whole dose then in a few days a 1/2 dose), then taking 1/2 every day for a couple of weeks... Then 1/2 every other day... Then spacing it out more then off. I think a month or so was a bit quick to wean though. You should probably do it over a longer period of time. Best wishes to you.

Yes! I have been experiencing shedding for about, at least 1.5 years...did not think that it could possibly be lexapro. I started praying about it more and more because it was really beginning to bother me and actually cause more anxiety. I finally googled it and found several forums about it. Saturday evening was the last day i took a pill. (20mg) I'm telling you no lie, I already see a difference in the amount of hair that's shedding!! I am overjoyed that I finally found the cause. I'm not taking another dose. I'm actually going to try to use other therapeutic coping skills so I don't have to take anything altogether. I know that Prayer works & I'm going to start believing God in this area of my life.

I am so glad to have found out that there is a direct cause for my hair loss, and it seems its name is LEXAPRO. The first side effect from the drug for me was a dry mouth, probably for the first week, but then that went away, and lucky me, my hair started falling out, especially in the shower and blow drying after. I've always had thick hair, and I've abused it with coloring and weaving, but it still felt like hair...now it feels like it's dead, no matter how many deep conditioning treatments I do. I'm only taking 10 ml, but I am going to talk to my doctor tomorrow about weaning off the drug. I'm glad there's a community of women who can talk about this stuff and advise each other.

Yes! I have all the same symptoms as you! I have been on Lexapro for st least 8 years. I have been to my family doc, endocrinologist (thyriod is normal) and dermatologist. I was treated with antibiotics and topical meds for the bumps as well as a prescription shampoo that is very drying to my hair. Scalp improved for a while but comes back. Also diagnosed with androgenic alopecia. I am convinced this is all due to Lexapro after reading this forum and I plan to stop. I also learned today there is a drug interaction with Lexapro and one of the topical meds I used on my scalp!
