Hi I've been reading all the messages in this thread, and now maybe my struggle with hairloss is due to this! I've never had an amazing mane, but jeez I had hair! nice long hair. I've been taking Lexapro 10mg an 20mg a day (depending on the periods where I've improved or worsened) and actually, now think my hair loss is related to this. There is hair in my pillow, in the shower loads each time I shower, even friends complaining when I went to visit about how much of my hair is left all over! I can see my scalp near the forehead and my crown has is thinning and you can see it as well.

I have suffered from depression for many years and this freaking pill has helped me quite a lot in that aspect. I've noticed how low I get when I'm off it, I am not a fan of taking meds, but it's apparently the only thing that has helped me. I am scared my depression will come back if I stop, but I don't want to be bald! it's taking over my life.

Hi everyone,

The French company Phyto makes some hair loss treatments and also thinning hair shampoos that seem to be working for me. My hair seems thicker around the thinning areas, hence the thin area is easier to hide. Kind of expensive, but making me feel a lot less terrified. Also, you can take evening primose oil and/or biotin capsules to try to help hair thicken. Make sure you are not anemic, and don't have a thyroid problem (those also cause hair to be lost, or thin out.) Cheers everyone

I had a terrible haircut in May 2015..My hair was thinned 50% all over by stylist. .It sent me into a deep depression as I was in shock.
I was put on 40 mg of lexapro for severe
depression and anxiety. Now I am losing losts of hair on top of head at crown. How ironic... I no longer have a psychiatrist as ahe left her practice. I am tapering off Lexapro as I strongly feel it is the reasin for the hair loss.
How.long does it take to get out of system amd reverse the hair loss? Will hair grow back? I AM SCARED..

I do not know how long it takes. I stopped cold turkey. However I suggest you taper off slowly. I also took and still take DasGro hair formula. They're pills that promote hair growth. They worked wonders for me. A little pricey. I'd suggest getting a 3 month supply.

Good Luck!!

I was switched from Prozac to Lexapro 20mg for PMDDMUSE and started experiencing hair loss and a 2 inch-bald spot. Now that I see all of these comments, I understand and will immediately switch back since both have worked for my severe PMDD.

I am in the same boat as you. I had tried the meds for 60days 5mg. Started noticing HL after few days. I had to quit after the 60 days I was was showing severe side effects of heart palpitations and others after a short week of skipping a day of meds. It has been almost 3 months and my hair is less than half of what it was. I am back taking omega 3 liquid, vita d, mutli vits, green algae and starting bee pollen, chia seeds and turmeric in my smoothies. Dr did not mention any side effects and it wasn't until extensive research of hair loss and side effects that there seems a good indication of a common denominator the SSRI. I booked myself to see dermatologist in 2 weeks to see if there is any end in sight of my dry, dull, lifeless and thinning hair. I sure hope there is some kind of remedy or improvement in the near future.

Hi,
I started taking 40 mg of lexapro in July 2015 and noticed tremendous haor loss stariNg in Sept 2015..I quit cold turkey in October 2015
as I felt the hair loss was due to the lexapro.
Did your hair grow back? And if so, how long did it take to stop shedding after being off lexapro? And how much time after stopping the lexapro did you notice regrowth? I would
appreciate any info or advice. Not much hair left and need to gold onto what I have.
Look forward to hearing from you.

I have been on and off Lexapro for almost ten years. Every time I try to stop - I lose my hair. It has been a cycle for me every time I try to get off. Let me also say that I went through hair loss before the meds during a very stressful time. It seemed that the meds really helped. I only wanted to get off, because I didn't want to be a slave to meds. I tapered myself off and of course something very stressful happened. I lost a tremendous amount of hair again, which brought back the anxiety, which led me to get back on a small dose of the meds. I'm trying to eliminate what I believe is causing me the stress, but I'm scared to get off of the meds again, because I feel like the meds keep the hair on my head. I'm strong and confident until my hair starts to shed - then I become an anxious mess. It's a vicious cycle that I would like to stop. This time, I am on the lowest dosage possible. I guess I'm stuck.

I would think that lexapro and other meds would be cause of hair loss except for the stress that you mentioned caused by being off of them..my hair loss started when i was taking 40 mg of lexapro..that is why I stopped..I was trying to rule out.Since then I have had extensive blood work done and every doctor that I have seen says that my levels are normal.I am taking viviscal and a multi vitamin. .I am considering steroid injections into scalp at $1300...I am a mess with thin hair.

Hi,
I just saw your post about hair loss and lexapro. I am 49 years old and was on 40 mg of lexapro since July 2015 and started shedding large amounts of hair in September
2015..I have lost 65% of my hair . I panicked and stopped taking Lexapro after I noticed the thinning. Thinnng is all over but especially at the crown vertex area. So noticeable that my hair naturally separates into sections amd have long lines of balding but not round spots.. The hair at nape is almost gone too. I have been to 2 derms,my family dr,and now an endochronolgist. My blood work is normal with exception of slighly low but in range ferritin and lymphocyte level is at 17.8 just under normal which scares me. I have been told it is telogen effluvium by 2 derms and that it will grow back. What scares me is the distnct pattern of loss at vertex area. I am taking Viviscal, a muti vitamin, zinc and b comolex. That is my story and would gladly appreciate any input advice, etc

Debbie,
I saw your post about hair loss and lexapro.
Were you taking a high dose of lexapro? I was taking 40 mg of lexapro for at least two months before my hair started falling out.
I stopped taking immediately after I saw my hair falling out. I have been off lexapro for 6 or 7 weeks and I am still losing lots of hair.
I am severley depressed over this and any info would be helpful as I am just guessing
the lexapro is the cause..All my lab results were normal. Thanks in advance and look forward to hearing from you.

How long will it typically take for hair loss to stop after discontinuing Lexapro?

I saw your post about lexapro and hair loss.
I started taking trileptal and Risperdal in june of 2015 and stopped taking as they were clearly the wrong meds for a depressed person.Started taking lexapro in july 2015 working my way up to 40 mg by Aug 2015.
My hair started falling out excessively in Sept 2015. It is now December 2015 and I have half the hair that I had with very little regrowth. I stopped taking Lexapro in October 2015. I have been taking viviscal for about a month and take a multi vitamin along with 5000 mcg of biotin. I don't know why my hair is not growing back. I am so sad about this.
It is hard to leave the house..

My research tells me it will take up to 6 months for hair regrowth. Other Lexapro users who also experienced hair loss, have said it took them up to 6 months for hair to start growing back. I've questioned 5 different pharmacists who have all said there is a 20% chance Lexapro will cause hair loss. So will Serroquel, Zoloft, Celexa, Paxil and Prozac. I'm pretty sure there are other antidepressants that cause hair loss. I am currently on 10 mg of Lexapro but will soon quit it and start taking Luvox another antidepressant which doesn't cause hair loss according to the 5 pharmacists I questioned. Both Lexapro and Luvox are SSRIs so no need to wean myself off the Lexapro to start the Luvox. I was told by the various pharmacists and in the research I did that it will take at least 6 months for hair regrowth. Good luck to you. Hopefully, your hair will grow back.
