Gabapentin was orginally designed as an anti-seizure medication under the name of Neurontin. They soon discovered how it acted as an anti-anxiety drug. It has been re-classified a few times since it's introduction. Coming from a person who has taken xanax on and off for years, gabapentin is a better option.

While a number of anti-seizure medications, like Tegretol (carbamazepine), valproate, and Lamictal (lamotrigine), are approved by the FDA for treating bipolar disorder, Neurontin (gabapentin) is not.

In 1993, Neurontin was approved by the FDA for the treatment of partial complex seizures, in combination with another anti-seizure medication. It was then marketed by its manufacturer for off-label use in treating bipolar disorder, despite the fact that there was not sufficient scientific data to back it up. A lawsuit resulted, as it was believed that Neurontin was marketed fraudulently for unapproved uses.

Get generic neurontin, called gabapentin. It is far cheaper . I hate reading that you cannot afford it. I am currently taking it for Bipolar 1 disorder with a severe anxiety disorder. I haven't been on it long enough to see if it truly helps me but I can tell you that no other mood stabilizer has worked for me or I have not been able to tolerate it/them. I am so in hope that the gabapentin works for me because I have been sick and diagnosed for decades !!!! I have been medication resistant or not been able to tolerate the meds as mentioned above. I have always been under psychiatric care and have always been compliant but nothing has worked for me so you can see why I am so hopeful this drug works for me. I stay in a mixed state most of the time with my anxiety and mania both presenting themselves to other people and the depression has practically taken life away from me. Bipolar is a devastating illness and it is so unfortunate that the general public looks down upon people with mental illnesses like we don't belong..........also health care for mental illness sucks !!!! TRY gabapentin.

I have bipolar and I am on meds. I have been taking Gabapentin- prescribed by the Va for an injury I incurred from being in the Army. I usually take the Gabapenin at night before bed because it relieves some of the pain in my legs. Recently the weather has been horrible and my pain has increased so I have taken in before work at a cashier at walmart. A night ago I decided to try to forgo the meds because of the fog brain. I woke up with the shakes and when I got to work in the late evening shift I lost my marbles with a customer and lost my filter. I looked at my pupils and they were huge. I went into mania.. I came home and I was itching so bad all over my back and really everywhere. I took the gabapentin last night and I am wondering what in the hell happened last night. I am on a mood stabilizer and an antidepressant. The gabapentin makes me feel very high and I am talkative but when not taking it, it made me into a raving maniac.

I use gabapentin for my bi-polar 1 , it makes me hypomanic which I have learned to manage better than full blown mania, But also I use a sedative occasionally I also have severe head trauma I have to be super careful with my meds

I started using Gabapentin for RA pain once at night. No side affects and I now take 2x a day being it is now for bipolar also. Much easier than a cocktail of stuff that may or may not work. As long as I remember to take it ever night I don't have Manic episodes. If I forget to take it I am Manic unfortunately. So to answer your question..yes I can say it has been a great treatment for my bipolar

Absolutely! I have bipolar 2, and Gabapentin will calm my hypomania within 1 hour. Also it has reduced racing thoughts considerable. A wonder medication.

Where did you hear that? That is silly. One of the things they prescribe it for is restless leg syndrome which occurs at night. So you have to take it at night. That's what I do. I love it, it also helps me sleep.

I was prescribed it for epilepsy, and noticed while I took it (didn't control epilepsy adequately) that I was calmer and more social/talkative, less brooding negative thoughts. Just a pleasant interlude of feeling happier. No bipolar or whatnot, but have been hospitalized for suicidal depressions every decade or so, so I have to take care of myself and be mindful.

Epilepsy long in remission after surgical treatment, I became an alcoholic so I finally went to a doctor and asked to be given gabapentin again as I knew the positive effect. Taking it I was able to stop drinking. I just kept taking it after that, taken it for years now at 300 mg 2x daily and it is the same as I remember. I am calmer, more social, and less dark brooding thought train. I am stable. Very slight sedative effect, but I am willing to live with that.

Gabapentin works for me. Took lamictal once for epilepsy and had to stop due to adverse mood side effects. Intense continuous weeping panic, but my neighbor took lamictal and it calmed her down. I would say for some people neurontin works.

Hi, I have struggled with Bi-Polar since childhood, I’m 42 now, and in the past 6 months was diagnosed as type 1. This diagnosis came after a trip to inpatient due to self-harm during a major depressive episode, which I have recently understood to be a mixed episode. During my stay in inpatient I was given Gabapentin along with Seroquel and Lithium. The most effective was Gabapentin. As others have mentioned; for me it has been a “miracle” medication. Since discharge from inpatient I have been faced with multiple overlapping triggering events, and due to Gabapentin I have managed these situations as if I am a new person- and in an authentically balanced manner. I have been amazed at the effectiveness of this medication. I love how it hasn’t “changed” me or made me foggy, drowsy, or otherwise less capable. It’s actually helped me “find” my self again. It was like a beautiful me was lost inside me somewhere and Gabapentin helped bring me back to the surface. Incredible, given the low quality of life I was experiencing prior to taking this medication.
