I have disc degenerative disease and have 3 bulging discs, c4-c5, c5-c6 and c6-c7 with severe spinal cord compression at c5-c6 and c6-c7, due to osteophytes. I have seen 4 surgeons, each with totally different opinions. The 1st surgeon wanted to do 2 disc replacements, 2nd only wanted to do anterior fusion, 3rd was a minimally invasive approach but they are on the other coast and wanted me to bring a check for $30K even though I have insurance. The 4th surgeon is in my area and specializes in minimally invasive surgery. He was going to do a posterior cervical foraminotomy, clean out the osteophytes (bone spurs) and the deposits on the lamina (or lumina). After reviewing my case with his surgical team, they now feel that I am at risk for a cervical deformity in the future and would prefer to take care of the entire situation with this surgery so I don't have to have another surgery in the future. They want to do a anterior cervical discetomy with fusion (removing the 3 discs) in addition to the posterior cervical foraminotomy (to remove all the osteophytes) with fusion (to support the anterior fusion). Has anyone had both of these done in a single surgery and how did it go? I'm scheduled for surgery on 12/16/11 and very worried about this.
