I did the search that brought me to this website because my heart has been skipping a beat approximately every 30-60 beats....if I am feeling my pulse, the skipped beats are detectable that way, but I also feel "flopping" im my upper abdomen and sometimes a strange weakness inside my body. I also sometimes have palpitations and episodes of irregular hearbeat. I am 49, female, about 10-15 pounds overweight (in my own estimation). I wonder if this could be stress- I am a day care provider with a full house, and over the weekend I cared for my 2 active grandsons, ages 2 and 4. It's really scary.

My cardiologist didn't want to put me on medication, and said that most people with this issue just accept it. However, I was coughing all day, uncontrollably and insisted. She gave me a 2-week sample of Toprol (a beta blocker) at 25 mg, but told me to take 1/2 a pill every day for 3 days and if the palpitations are still going on, to take a whole one. I've been taking 1/2 for 4 days and they're a LOT better. Not sure if I'll need to take this forever, or what, but I'm the most relaxed I've been in a couple weeks. Still a little coughing and palpitating, but not like before.
Still have to have a stress test in a few weeks.

It feels good to know that I am not the only one! My heart issue has been occuring for years now but not with as much frequency as I have read on other posts. Here is some stuff I found which has been known to cause this peculiar issue:
Asthma - Which I have
High Blood Pressure - Which runs in my family
Diabetes-Also in the family
Anxiety
Lack of sleep - I have a small child so I am lucky to get a full 8 hours
Too much Caffeine
Drug interactions
Over exertion/stress
I hope this helps. I have cut out whatever I could in order to stop this fluttering heart/cough from happening and whenever I do, it happens less frequently. Rest assured we are all slowly dying but in most cases it is not from a pre- heart attack. Worrying about having a heart attack from having what it is that we have will only make the flutters worse (anxiety).

I had the same issue with heart palpitations and having to cough to get my breath. I had to wear a heart monitor for 24 hours, to monitor when it would happen. It turned out, that this would take place about 45 minutes after I would eat and would come on even stronger after I had anything with caffeine. My Dr prescribed Protonix, which is for acid reflux. I took it for about 6 weeks, and everything was fine...that was about two years ago. Now, I only take the medicine when I have a "flair-up" which is rarely. Hope this helps.

I have been coughing with palpitations for about 12 years. The coughing is driving me crazy. I seem ti have a post nasal drip also. Not sure whether the drips is what is causing it or the other way around. Sometimes I cough so bad I can't get my breath. Have been tested for so many things but just get frustrated and stop seeing the doctor. Have been seeing a respiratory specialist but think he knows nothing. I am wondering if an Ear Nose Throat guy would be the same or a different field. This cough is affecting my life so badly and my marriage. Can't go anywhere. If anyone out there can help please do.

I have had the same. Came across a site that describes these symptoms exactly as described. Could be a condition called MVP (Mitral Valve Prolapse). Seems like a valve that doesn't open and close properly at times that causes a heart murmer. Run a search on this (MVP) and read about it, it may help.

I have these symptoms and have been to many cardios and have had two heart ablations. My docs have called it electrophysiology (hope I spelled it correctly). I also take a med called Flecinaid.

A few years ago I became concerned with this same heart skips a beat, creating a thud I guess when it restarts, and creates a need to cough thing. It's not in the throat like irritation, not sure what it is, more like a quick blow to the chest or back would do to you. I went to the doc for something else and mentioned it and he said oh your heart wouldn't make you cough, then mumbled something about being connected with the respiratory system or something like that and then said so yeah, I guess it's possible. So I don't think enough doctors hear about or care about the problem to investigate. And it looks like half of you have actually had extensive testing done to no avail. Until I saw this page I thought I was just a freak with a weird problem..... XD

I was so glad to see this thread because it means I am not alone, and I am not crazy. I am a 27 year old female and have been having similar symptoms for about 4 years. I first noticed it during a period of high anxiety, but my most recent episodes have occurred when I have been pretty stress free. I have not noticed it to be worse when I lay down, though it has bothered me on the not as good days. I also have shortness of breath, and it seems to be worse sometimes after I eat. This past episode (that has lasted nearly a week, but gotten somewhat better) was the first time I've noticed the cough. I've debated whether or not to see my doctor about it because I'm sure that as soon as I do, all symptoms will vanish.

I have the same thing thats been going on for 4 years now. Been through all the tests. Wore a holter monitor for 30 days instead of the usual 1 day. The results showed a small Upper AV Block. My cardiologist stated that a human heart beats over 2.5 billion times during a normal life span and that when added up these "skips" only equal less than .01% or about 250,000 times during your life. ITS NORMAL. Most people don't feel it and others are more prone to feel. Stress, caffeine, nicotine, drugs, obesity, etc. can add to it's frequency. If someone reading this with these same symptoms has not been checked out by a cardiologist please do so, it helps ease your fear and it gives you a status of your overall heart health!

Hi there everyone,
I just came across this thread as I was searching for answers regarding my heart problem. I am a 30 year old male and recently I began experienceing heart palpitations as well. I've actually experience them since I was in my early 20s but they happened very very VERY infrequently, once a year perhaps. Recently (figures it would happen when I turn 30), I began to get them more frequently, 2-3 times a day. The symptoms are exactly what many of the posters on this thread describe. They happen when I am relaxing (sitting or lying down) and when they occur I have the urge to cough, sometimes I won't cough, sometimes I will but the cough "reflex" always occurs. It feels like my heart has stopped and that it is "reminding" itself to start again with a very forceful beat.
Another thing I've noticed with the recent occurances of these palpitations is that sometimes there is an adrenaline rush associated with the palpitation that makes it difficult for me to sleep, I'm not sure if this is caused by my anxiety or the palipitation. The earlier occurances of this palpitation (back in my early 20s) didn't have this adrenaline rush. I find myself on edge now all the time.
Anyway, I went to see a doctor about this, and everything came back fine, I have good blood pressure, my blood work turned out okay, the EKG was normal, and they monitored my heart for over an hour and nothing happened.

I have been having similar symptoms for a few weeks - with palpitations ("skipping a beat") several per minute, not always with the adrenaline rush, but occasionally. The urge to cough just began recently. I am a 41 year old female, in excellent physical condition - ideal weight, I work out regularly, low blood pressure, etc. An EKG was normal, blood test (for anemia) was normal, and thyroid test was normal. I'm debating whether to go for a stress test.

I have been experiencing this for about 10 years now... I also started it in my early 20's (hmm... theme here?)... When I was pregnant with my daughter, my cardiologist found my electrolytes (magnesium) were REALLY low and gave me IV magnesium, and told me to take Magnesium-Oxide (You have to get it behind the pharmacy counter, but it's nonprescription) It is just delivered more accurately.... This hasn't made my PVCs (it's what I was diagnosed with) Premature Ventricular Contractions... it hasn't made them go away... and I have the cough and the whole nine yards.... but if I don't take my magnesium, it sure gets a lot worse... alcohol, caffeine and sugar and stress definitely aggrevate them! If you have PVCs or at least these symptoms.... try dropping tabacco, alcohol, caffeine and sweets and downgrade your stress!
