Hello~

I too have the skip abeat heart palpitations with the cough at the end of it.

I have noticed that whenever I eat rich food [rich cheeses like mascarpone, too much butter, chocolate especially Dark Chocolate etc.

Also a lot of stress will make them happen more often.

lots of Sleep, 9-10 hours before 10 p.m so your body gets to regenerate .

Stop eating by 6 or 6:30 p.m eat your main meal at lunch and make dinner a little nonfat or low fat meal of soups , vegies, etc. no animal food at dinner.

Since I have done these changes my palpitations are gone.

Paul Pitchfords book: Healing With Whole Foods ...explains alot about the heart and what foods help or hurt it. WONDERFUL BOOK!!!!
GREAT REFERENCE BOOK!
PEACE,
EMILY

I am so relieved to find this thread of posts. I have also been having these palpitations for a while. I have noticed them starting about a year ago. They are not very frequent. I am a 27 y.o. F. in good health and not overweight. Today they got really bad to where I feel a need to cough periodically. It is rather constant, but seems to improve with deep breaths and is better while I am exercising. Like many others, it seems worse during rest. Its a very uneasy feeling, and almost feels like little muscle spasms, like you get in your eyelid...except its in the heart instead.

I guess I should go get it checked by a doctor...but I am thinking they will probably find nothing. I do not drink caffeine, but I do like chocolate. I am going to try cutting chocolate out of my diet and see if this helps. I also could probably stand to get more sleep. When I do have these attacks, I feel a rush of adrenaline and once it starts it seems to continue very easily. I think perhaps it could be anxiety related, but cannot find a trigger for my anxiety. I do tend to be a bit of an anxious/worrying type of person.

I do not want to have to take any sort of medication for this problem. What natural approaches have people come across to help with this? Diet/exercise/relaxation techniques/herbal supplements...I am open to any ideas!
Thanks

My symptoms happens usually during "ALLERGY" seasons, like fall or spring. During the allergy seasons, I normally take some a half a pill of Allegra-D. A question to all the people who posts here is, does your symptom seem to occur during allergy seasons? During these times, I sneeze and cough quite often, so I wonder if that could trigger some spasm or palpatations. Awaiting your reply.

Regards.

Personally, I can say I find no connection with allergies and the palpitation-coughing thing. I don’t have seasonal allergies and even when I have a cold, I don’t like taking antihistamines or decongestants. I really feel pretty “drugged up” if I do. If you Google side effects for Allegra-D, it lists abnormal heart rhythms, Heart Throbbing or Pounding, and coughs as possibilities, however.

Gupptylegs~

You asked about natural approaches for the problem… I recently purchased a product called the “StressEraser”. It’s a biofeedback device that teaches you how to breathe correctly and thus relax more (relieving stress). I have been using it along with taking magnesium and vitamin D and am feeling much better. I can’t say which item (or if it’s the combination of all) is making the difference, however.

I actually looked up this question and was surprised to see so many with the same symptoms. I won't try to answer it because I've seen so many great answers, but would just like to add to the list of people with the same condition, and provide my personal details:

27, Male
Smoker
Recently Overweight (over past year)
No stress
Feels like anxiety because I'm constantly worried about it
Exercise feels all right
Doesn't worsen when laid down
Occasionally lightheaded
strong urge to cough each time
Symptoms got worse when switched from smoking to electronic nicotine inhaler

At 66 years old these symptoms are nothing new for me. The catch feeling and the cough to relieve the problem thought were unique to me since my doctor said he never quite heard these symptoms described to him before. but I certainly am not alone by reading all these replys.
I never have the catch feeling while exercising or any moderate activity, but instead have the feeling while vegetating in front of the TV or lying down for sleep or relaxing. We might just call this the twitching, catching coughing heart syndrome.

i have the same symptoms as people on here about palpitaions which make me cough.
i have had no tests because i am labelled with having had anxiety in past. anxiety is going to be the death of me, they blame it for everything despite the fact, i do know when i am anxious or not. funnily enough it took years for them to believe i was sufferring from anxiety, and now....
i want an echocardiogram. i think i am going to have to pay private. my heart wont actually beat faster when it should but it beats harder. sometimes its in my throat, sometimes in my abdomen, but i feel both beats , one fast and the second beat cant keep up with it.
i cant explain to my doc because he is sittting rubbing his chin with a patronising look on his face pretending to be interested.also because i had one negative ecg he says that everything must be ok. ecg was done years ago, and i know tht if you are not having heart symtoms at the time ecg does not show everything. if i mention that i know this, he thinks i am reading too much and imagining the rest.
im just waiting now to die as i have left instructiopns for my family to sue. i mean what can you do when noone will at least test for something?

Well, I don't know whether to be comforted that there are so many of us who experience these symptoms - or really concerned that doctors generally dismiss these symptoms as inconsequential. I've experienced the palpitations since I was a young girl - about 14...I am now 52 and like others of you have said - they never leave me completely but I can go for very long periods of time without them. Currently they are driving me crazy... and actually, I'll just mention that exercise seems to aggravate the condition...SOMETIMES! :-)
It gets to the point that I don't go to the cardiologist because they never find anything(holter monitor, EKG, stress treadmill all normal) and I end up feeling like a hypochondriac. Sure would love to hear if anyone finds relief.

I just began experiencing these symptoms as well. I'm a 25 year old female and over weight, but I see that even people that aren't over weight experience it as well. The heart pounding doesn't hurt, but it is uncomfortable. I'm some what relieved that I wasn't the only one with this problem. I have acid reflux and I don't know if that ties in with this condition. While my heart is pounding hard, it feel almost like the cough is being pushed out of me. It is totally involuntary. I'm worried because I know that heart conditions run in my family... I think I'm going to go to the clinic... I want it to stop. Even when I'm at rest it happens... it doesn't get worse, it stays about the same. I don't know what it could be...

Mine started about a year ago, skipped beat followed by a cough. I am almost 57. There is no regularity to this, but when exercising it is rarely a problem. This fact made me feel that it was not serious. Doc. found nothing offered the monitor but it had stopped by then and didn't begin again for months. I have long periods (months) with no symptoms. If you take your pulse at the wrist you can feel the heart stop and then the resuming of the heart which often causes a cough. The cough is in my opinion purely a mechanical reaction and not important but it is very annoying. As some others have said cough drops and medicine do help. This makes no sense unless the cough is somehow exacerbating the skipping of the heart and or there is some effect on the heart or its regulatory mechanism of the cough suppressing drug, this would seem unlikely but not impossible. This long thread really offers no answers but it is helpful to know that ot hers have the same problem.

I am a 45 yo female. I have this same problem and it is comforting to know I am not the only one.

My heart feels like it's flipping and then I cough. I just had a halter monitor for 48 hours and they said nothing was wrong, even at the times I reported the feeling. The doc said it could be cafeine, or I could be developing asthma. After reading this thread I get the feeling its more related to stress than asthma. I have cut cafeine (have had a withdrawl headache for two days) and am using Advair inhaler. So far I am still having them, just as often.

My symptoms do seem worse when resting. These started about 10 years ago, although at that time it was quite unfrequent and the doc would say it was normal. Now these are happening all of the time.

However, there are many different possible diagnosis listed here, so I am still not sure what it is. If anyone really figures this out, I am waiting to hear.

Thanks for all of the input!

I am a very healthy, regularly exercised 21yr old male..
It's been worrying me for a while, it's at long periods of rest that i get them.
From what i hear it is harmless, as some of these people have have full tests done.

I think that worrying about it makes it worse, due to the fact you can't stop 'looking' for the next one.

Stupid thing is, when i have forgotten all about them for a few weeks say, i don't notice any!

When I had sn episode of my skip cough... I went to the doctor and that it comes from stress,a nd anxiety. The doctor said she even expreiencd this at times. Once I began taking pills for panic attacks they I didnt get them as much. I notice they occur when I miss a dose or if I'm stressing a lot. But I when I would first tell doctirs about it they would tilt their heads to the side and give me that curious puppy dog look!

Again, it's so good to hear I'm not alone with these weird symptoms. I'm a health 43 year old female with no medical history to speak of and on no medications. I exercise frequently and have a minimal intake of caffeine each day (1 12 oz cup coffee). My "flip-flop" symptoms began in early June 09 and I would have an occasional need to cough. About 10 days into the episode, my need to cough became more pronounced thoughout the day and was very annoying. I couldn't even hold it back. The next day I woke up with no heart symptoms and no cough. It had mysteriously disappeared and I haven't had any real re-occurence since (fingers crossed). My heart goes out to you (no pun intended) who have similar experiences. This is not fun. I chalked my experience up to increased stress, though I'm not sure what it was. BTW - my labs and EKG were unremarkable and I decided against the event monitor as I decided to "watch and wait." I hope I don't need it in the future!
