Same symptoms here...however I always have a very low pulse. 48. Which is the pulse of a well trained athlete. I am not.
Just recently very severe palpitations, 4 seconds appart, continuing thru the night! Does anyone else have a low pulse?

Had, exatcly the same, thing, and I too cut out caffeine etc, it would also bring out panic attacks in me. However I have managed to track it down to foods that have aspatame in them or are high in sugars since then I only get them when I take this food. Perhaps this might help you.

Wow, had no idea so many people suffer from the same condition. (palpitations/flipping/pausing) I have had these skipped beats since 17. I am now 36. Jumped from doctor to doctor for several years and had all the cardio tests. I convinced myself that all the doctors were idiots and I had a heart problem and was going to die. By doing so I started to have panic attacks every other day or so. It got bad, real bad. Because of my stuborness the anxiety and panic attacks ruined about 10 years of my life. My only advice, especially to you younger people, if all the tests say it's ok then don't dwell on the palpitations. Doing so can make things much much worse. Eventually with anxiety medication and finally convincing myself they weren't life threatening they went away almost completely for about six years. Then went through a stressful period and they are back. Below is a list of things that I know first hand can make them worse.

Stress/Anxiety...and dwelling on it when it does happen. I still have problems not dwelling on it
To many beers...this one sticks...If I party sometimes I can have episodes for a couple of days afterwards.
Lack of sleep
tobacco.....cigs or chewing
not eating good....skipping meals

Everyone is different but in my case to much of any of these causes them to occur. Never noticed a connection with caffeine. Cutting caffeine out was one of the first things I tried with no results. But everyone's body is different. Hope this relieves some worries for someone and helps them.

No caffeine always very good advice , especially for the younger generation that gets bombarded by all the high caffeine energy drinks out there ... not good for anyone ....!! ALSO VERY GOOD ADVICE IS TO READ UP MORE ABOUT DIET SODAS AND MAN MADE SUGARS..MANY ARTICLES ONLINE OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE HAD MANY BAD SYMPTOMS DUE TO THESE TWO TYPE OF PRODUCTS,THAT ALSO CAN CAUSE CANCER AND IS ACTUALLY STATED ON SOME SUBSTITUTE SUGAR PACKAGES "CAUSED CANCER IN LAB MICE". but people still drink diet sodas and substitute sugar ? go figure?........

I thought I was the only one. I've been experiencing this for 2 weeks now. I haven't been to see a Doctor as of yet because, when something is wrong, I never experience it when I go to the Doctor. When it occurs, I feel the fluttering first then I begin to cough. Sometimes it cuts my breath so bad, I can't talk or it makes me skip my words.

Wow! I have had the exact same thing going on! My heart feels like it's going crazy at times and it's been doing this for about 3 weeks. I have the urge to cough after these "palpitations". I have had test after test and all come back fine except, when I wore a monitor for 24 hours, the doctor said I had a total of 531 premature or skipped beats. I think thats a little much. I was reading on another site and there was a person who was having about 4 a day and was very worried. I know it's normal/common to have these but 531 in 24 hours!?? Any advice??

I'm another person with the same exact symptoms. I'm a 35-year-old female with GERD and a panic disorder. My panic disorder has been under control (no panic attacks at all) for many years though. The first time I experienced the palpitations was after a particularly stressful 2-week period in the summer of 2008. I was lying in bed at night and my heart felt like it fluttered - skipped a beat. I continued for about 2 or 3 seconds and I felt the urge to cough. When I did, the fluttering stopped. From that moment on, it would happen about at least once a day - usually at rest. I thought it was actually my acid reflux I was feeling, but I could actually feel the skipping when I checked my pulse. It definitely seems to be my heart.

My doctor did an EKG and had me on a holter monitor. Of course, there was no fluttering while I was wearing the monitor (I hate when that happens!) The EKG showed nothing. Sometimes I get a bunch in a row and I feel a little light-headed, but for the most part, I haven't had any other symptoms. (They sure don't help with the panic disorder, though - I get a little freaked when it happens.)

I have since cut down on caffeine and began a regular meditation and exercise routine. The paliptations don't occur when I exercise and now they only happen once every few weeks or so. I can't pinpoint a trigger, but as long as the cough sets it right, I'm happy about that.

I'm 52 and was born with aortic problems. I have had surgery twice now, but I want to be clear that maybe until now it has not slowed me down at all. I've been around the world 3 times, worked in 5 countries, and still going strong after aortic valve (mechanical) replacement in the Walmart of Heart Surgeries, Fu Wai Hospital in Beijing.
When you have palpitations, cough, and cough in a normal pace, each breath, until it stops.
When you lie down, never lie on your back. Always lie on your side as lying on your back puts increased pressure on your heart. However, the people who have problems when lying on my back concern me and I think you should have it checked out.
Palpitations can be caused by nerves, caffeine, alcohol, certain types of food -- there is a very long list.
Two other members of my family with healthy hearts have the same issue, and we all use the same method. Mine escalated a few years ago and that, along with difficulty breathing, checked me into the doctor who informed me I was 4 out of 5 in terms of heart failure, with 5 being curtains. Since I lived in Asia at the time, I went shopping and found Fu Wai in Beijing. It was an excellent and economical choice.

Well at least now I know I am not alone with this skipping heart beat and automatic cough syndrome.

The first time this happened about 13 years ago, it really scared the piss out of me. It litteraly exhausted me as if I had been chopping wood all day. I asked my girlfriend to take me to the emergency on to be told that it was nothing to worry about. The strange thing was that as soon as the doctor told me that, the skipping heart beats immediately stopped.

Since then, I occasionally get these episodes about once a year and they last for about 30 to 45 minutes. But these last few days, my heart has been playing these tricks on me for the last 4 days. No pains just the same old skips and tendency to clear my throat by coughing.

They may not be a serious condition and many people have these symptoms but I can surely do without it.

I am now 49 but since I was 16 I have had occasions of feeling as though something has given my heart a quick squeeze that would make me cough then followed by the awarness of my heartbeat racing for a few minutes. It's like if I would forget to breathe at times. I have always played sports and trained hard yet I never seem to get fitter. It was almost daily in my 30s but nothing showed up on any monitors and my doctor dismissed it as imaginary. It was more common at night especially if I lie on my back. It is definitely more prevalent if I eat chocolate which I did daily. Since I stopped regular chocolate 3 years ago the incidence has decreased significantly but is no less disturbing when it does happen. My 23 yr old daughter has had it for the past 6 years. Recently I signed up for a drug testing course but they couldn't use me because my lung function showed only 70% efficiency. I remembered then that 25 yrs ago, registering for a health club, the tester dismissed my low breath test results as faulty equipment as I appeared to be so fit and healthy. I wonder if that could be a factor? I think yoga and deep breathing exercises have helped somewhat.

I have exactly the symptoms that are described here, sometimes worse than others, usually sitting or resting. I am 59 and first started having them when I was pregnant with my second chile who is now almost 25. I have only noticed the cough with the palpitations in the last year. The worst that it ever was occurred last year when I had pneumonia. I can feel the skipped beats followed by several rapid beats in my pulse and in my heart. I haven't been evaluated by a doctor or had a holter monitor, although I did have a doctor suggest that. I have heard that this can be benign, but it is a nuisance and worrisome, because it just doesn't seem right. I have a strong history of cardiac disease in my family, so that worries me too. I've been thinking of going to a cardiologist but haven't done it yet. It's very interesting to see that others have exactly the same thing. This is the first that I have heard of others who experience the cough, and cathching your breath with the palpitations. It seems there should be some medical explanation. I do live at altitude of over 7000 ft but I first experienced this at sea level. I am surprised to hear so many very young people with this symptom.

I am a 37 year old woman with the same symptoms. I started having the skipped beat feeling in my heart in my late twenties, and started having the urge to cough with them about three years ago. I actually feel better when I am active and my heart rate is up. When I slow down at the end of the day is when I am bothered most, and definately when I lay down. I have made trips to the ER only to be told nothing is wrong. I finally saw a cardiologist and was diagnosed with PVCs (premature ventricular contractions). I was told they are nothing to worry about, and there was nothing that could be done about it. About a year ago I was put on a beta blocker for high blood pressure, I didn't have any syptoms for 10 months, but they have recently returned. They seem worse now and seem to take my breath away at times. It makes me feel better to know I'm not the only one with these sympotms. If anyone finds out any other info on this please post.

This condition has ruined my day today. Trying to run errands and these exact symptems described above cause my throat to tighten and burn. Then push pressure in my head so hard my head aches terribly. It only happens periodically but when it does its very severe and very uncomfortable. Wish someone out there had a remedy. Once I started on some Co-Q enzyme and it helped. I got a different kind this time with black pepper extract, I think its worse for the symtems. Idk...At one point I went to ER and the doctor told me roughly the same thing described above. He did perscribe me atenolol and ativan. He told me to finish both bottles and I did. Everything stopped and stayed gone for more than a year. I dont have insurance now or believe me I would go back.

I think I know the cause.

- ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS
(Aspartame/ Acesulfame-Potassium/ Splenda, etc.)

- LACK OF SLEEP/ FOOD

- EXCESSIVE DRINKING

Why do I suspect these? Because the I got this when I was 19, and again now that I am 20. I wore the Holter Monitor, had EKGs, and had a heart ultrasound - all normal. This condition is probably due to falling back into old habbits. DIET SODAS CAUSE CANCER PEOPLE, look it up!

Caffiene does not seem to be a culprit, but I have read time and time again the horrible health effects of artificial sweeteners (Alchzimers, brain tumors, central nervous system problems, etc.)

Try 8 hours of rest, NO SWEETENERS OR POP (water only!), 3 regular meals and NO ALCOHOL for a week then tell me how you feel.

I must add, healthy eating is very important (ex. GUM has ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS - READ the label!). No fast food or microwaveable dishes.
