Hi every1 at the age of 16 i was told i had SVT (Super ventricular tacycardia), i was taken to hospital after i visted the doctor as i was having a funy feeling in my head light headed kind of thing the first time that feeling happend wen i had been out clubbing with my friends from work and i was panicking as i thought someone had spiked my drink, i had all of sudden got a funy taste in my mouth and my head went all funny, but then it happened for a few days after that......he tested my heart rate and told me to go straight up the hospital as my heart was beating crazy.. i went to the hospital and had a ECG the doctor took me into a room and i was given loads of drugs to slow it down, i tell you now i couldnt feel it goin fast at all i could of run the marathon i felt fine!!??very strange...
anyway they tried to slow it down and they couldn't my heart rate was nearly at 200 beats a minute, but like i said i felt fine... they finally slowed it down and i was kept in over night incase.
in the morning the hospital questioned me if i took drugs, smoked, drunk alchoal, tea or coffee?? i reponded no to it all... i had had like 2 bottles of smirnoff ice the night it first happened that was it. i dont smoke or drink tea and coffee,,, the only drug i could think of was if someone had spiked my drink that night... he ddnt understand y it was all happening. i said i eat loads of choclotte not loads but i did eat a bit he put it down to that..
I left hospital the next day with some tablets to take VERAPAMIL!! i returned to hospital a few times for check ups and had a heart scan and they told me I had an extra valve in my heart where it beats through to many times or somethin like that, but they did tell me i could ge tthat burned away but i really didnt need to wrry..
they diagnosed me with superventriculartacycarida. im still on the medication and im now 21 in 2 weeks,
another think that is strange is before i took the tables i couldnt feel my heart beating fast but now i can and its good in a way as i can stop it as before i didnt know and its dangerous to let it keep beating so fast,, i have not yet fainted when my heart is going fast but i have felt very light headed,, my trick to stop it once its palpitating is to crouch down low or drink cold water or sometimes i hold my breath and push hard with the breathe on my throat if tht makes sence i dont use my hands on my throat but the breath.... i dont get it often any more which is great and if i do its for a few seconds and i can stop it but i do haves some days where it will happen on and of for a good hour... or 2.. it was really strange i was working away frr 6 months and must of got it like 10 times in the whole time i was there the moment i landed in england it happened, i also went away for a week last week and i got back the next day and i had a palpitation. very strange...
i really hope i can come of the tablets soon but the doctor said i hve to have year with no palpitations at all..

i hope this has helped you with stopping the palpitations if you gt them it works for me

thanks

I'm SO glad other people are having this problem. I'm a healthy 23-yr old female, healthy weight (BMI is 21) and the only known medical condition I have is a mild case of depression/anxiety. I am moderately active and am always told my blood pressure/heart rate is excellent when I go in for check-ups and whatnot.

I recall having these "skips" since I was very young. When I was 4 or 5, I was diagnosed with childhood epilepsy, which I was medicated for until I was 9 and haven't had a seizure since. I've always wondered if this had something to do with it.

I started noticing it more as a teenager. I smoked, drank and partook in "other things" however, so I didn't think much of it. I've stopped drinking and "other things", but I still smoke (1/2 pack per day, approx) and I drink maybe one caffeinated beverage per day. I get this "kick" or "flutter" in my heart, and I feel the need to cough. Usually one cough sets it back, but sometimes I'll go into a little coughing fit. It scares the c**p out of my boyfriend, because he's never experienced this. It doesn't hurt when the flutters happen, but I also sometimes get sharp stabbing pains in my chest near my heart. THAT scares the c**p out of me.

I hope I can afford to make it to the doctor soon. I just financed a new vehicle, as my old one pooped out, and I'm attending college so money is tight. :-( You guys have comforted me a bit though.

I have been looking this up for years now and I see many people with the same annoying issue. I am an active 33 yr old male with bicuspid aortic disorder. I was told at the age of 22 that I had this condition and depending on how bad the valve wears down depends on the need to get it replaced. I went to the cardiologist 2 weeks ago and had a echo done on my heart and everything looked to be normal but I still get the thud or squeeze feeling and feel the need to cough. It happens the most when I am at rest or have been at rest wether it be sitting up or laying down. I have had these for about 8yrs now and they are random when they happen. I read a lot on this because it worries me sometimes how the doctors can say this is normal when I don't see how your heart skipping or stopping for a second can be normal. I have had times when they happen while I am talking and I have to stop to cough and catch my breath a little. They annoy me but I have become used to them now and dismiss them because really there is nothing you can do when you have been to three different doctors and they tell you that you are fine and to carry on. I have read many prognosis on what some doc's are calling this: PVC's, Palpitations, Early repolorization, the list goes on and on. I just live day to day and tell myself that when my time is up..its up. I no longer let it control me or my life because if I spend my time stressing over the the things I can't control then I can't deal with the ones I can. I leave my life in Jesus's hands now and let him lead the way and now my life has been 100 times better ever since. We all need to continue to figure out what is wrong with our bodies but don't let it make you anxious or add more stress to your life than there already is because what is life.......when you can't live one. :-) God Bless and and hope everyone is well.

hi my name is vicktoria i am 35 and about 5 years ago i started expiriencing the pulps. i remember it was a year after my baby was born i started on the adkins diet to loose the baby weight. there after was when my epsisode started and since then i have also had all the test that my insurance would allow done. i have had my share of visits to the ER and the only diaognosis given to me was that my heart beat from the botton to the top. but its a very horrible feeling and i often think is going eventualy kill me. i am very scared to die i dont want to leave my baby girl. right know i am at work and i feel horrible i asked my coworkes to keep an eye out for me in case i faint or my heart stops beating. i have been told there is nothing wrong but my body tells me different. i am afraid of SADS ( Sudden adult death syndrome) it come with no warning and i which doctors would really take more time with the patients and try and find a solution to all of our symtoms. if there is someone that has had a good expireance with a good dr. please advise the doctors name. sometimes i feel so tired of battleing this out that when i feel horriable i just tell my self if its going to take me take me fast but then i start to cry looking over at my baby girl she is 5 years old and all she does is find me heart and she is so sweet, she prays for everyone every night for those that have the same symtoms her mommy has. she is the most unselfish little person. she will continue to pray for everyone that is sick and needs to feel better. she is my Victorialyn

I have these also. I feel a fluttering like a bird or butterfly in my chest and then have to cough. I notice they happen more when I get stressed. I started regular exercise and healthy eating and haven't experienced them much since. However, I have started waking up at night feeling like my heart is racing or jumping around in my chest.

Oh Thank God for you all!

I am 33 years old and i started having the same symptoms in June and it scares me because it was prceded by a pain in my chest.
i went to the er and was told that the cold could be due to a cold. How ever i have had asthma and this is not bronchial at all . I believe it is my heart and my evidence is simply process of elimination.

I feel so crazy and i am scared that this will take me to my death. I have a list of questions of which i am going to ask my doctor on Oct. 14th .

I will posts the answers

Thank you for sharing because i really was at my wits end.

my problem is irregular heartbeats and palitation but I don't automatically cough, I purposely make myself cough and that makes my heartbeat go back to normal, so maybe the coughing is your body's way of correcting your heartbeat, I actually read that somewhere

me again, I forgot to add this, I am sure my problem is to do with anxiety, I am having tests done to eliminate heartproblems and other things.

I can't believe I found all of these posts from people experiencing the same thing! I was really wondering why coughing seems to help the palpitations go away.....anyone know. I have been having these palpitations for a couple of months now and the doctors can't seem to find the reason. It is so unsettling and stressful. I haven't done the holter monitor yet because it doesn't seem to tell you anything that you don't already know.

It seems to me that the esophagus may have some sort of impact on this and it might not be a heart issue after all. Does that seem likely?

Apparently when you get palpitations or other odd heartbeats and you cough, it actually shocks your heart into beating normal again.
I have had palpitations and other odd heartbeats for so long I never worry about it anymore, I am in good health, my only problem is anxiety and I know there is nothing at all wrong with my heart, had it checked several times. anxiety can cause so many symptoms, we just have to learn to accept it and how to cope with it the best way. I meditate and try to turn my negative thoughts into positive ones.
Keep smiling.... XD

coughing is a good thing for palpatations--it helps your heart to get back to a normal beat. Heart palpatations are probably a type of arrhythmia. This is an electrical problem of the heart eventhough you heart itself is strong and healthy. Other ways to stop palpatations (vagal maneuvers) bear down and bend over(as if going to the bathroom)-put cold water on your face to shock it--rub eyeballs putting pressure on them.
Heart palpatations can be limited by avoiding things like caffeine, alcohol, drugs, stress, overexersion, lack of sleep, stress.

Check out heart arrhythmia on the web--it will help you better understand what could be going on.

I have lived with arrhythmia since my teens--only finding out last year that i have it. It is managable, also managable with drugs or by having surgery (heart ablation). I have experienced both drugs and the surgery. Still have to maintain a healthy lifestyle--avoid some of the things that i love--but worth my health.

I had no idea that coughing helped your heart but I think that's good to know if I ever do start to suffer from palpitations or know someone who does. Thanks for the insight.

hello, i also have these palpitations. They are premature ventricular contractions. Tipically, a heartbeat starts in the upper area of the heart, the atria, there are a group of cells that send an electrical signal which makes the atria contract followed by the other chambers.

In a PVC, a group of cells in the ventricle, incorrectly generates an electrical current which makes the ventricle contract first ( tipically it contracts last). That is why that beat feels different. Then the heart resets itself, which accounts for the pause, and then just continues beating normally.

The irregular contractions are not efficient, and don't pump blood very well. So if you get a lot of them is a short ammount of time, you might feel light headed, because your brain is not being supplied with the proper oxygen it needs. There are so many reasons, that causes this that its almost hard to list them, but since this an electrical issue within your body, you want to make sure you are getting enough magnesium and potassium in your diet. Also if you exercise regularly, they tend to disappear.

These are typically not dangerious, but should be checked.
