I have been having the same palpatations, feels like my heart is fluttering, and it makes me want to caugh, sometimes it gives me a slight headache and slight pain in my chest. I can get this when totally relaxed, I have also experienced a couple of times when walking a lot in cold weather that I get a pain in my chest and the top of my head. When you tell the doctor about it they give a really old fashioned look as if to say you're making it up. I would love to know what is the cause of it.

Same symptoms here in terms of palpitations and urge to cough. I'm healthy and very active but most often I have these signs and symptoms when I'm lying down. Note here. I find my palpitations are most often linked to coffee and if I lay off for a couple of days they pretty much disappear . The cough is interesting. I'm leaning toward a body's natural urge when there is conjestion to cough. Altered heartbeat and output could be linked to fluid build-up. I also have that sigh. Thanks for all the posts.

Im 24 and had an incident last year Nov where i used extra adderall which is an amphetamine to stay up and study for final exams. I also work full time. I did not sleep and then went to work. After work i ate another adderall to go take the exams . when i got to my car i couldnt breath, had a rapid heart beat, palipitaions, and my vision was blurry and i was light headed. I freaked out and drove to the er where they ran a set of tests including ekg which came back normal. I have had the same "attacks' about 10 times since but every day i feel heaviness in my chest with difficulty taking a deep breath and heart palipitaions. When the palipitaions occur i feel tingling in my arms and legs and the occur almost every time i lay down on my back or side. The doctors wont refer me to a cardiologist because they believe its caused by stress. I have taken meds for stress with no changes. I am starting to believe i have caused heart failure from the use of the amphetamines and would like to take a stress test but the docs are being difficult. I also have had an echocardiogram and everything was normal. Any advice on this would be appreciated!!!! I see alot of posts with symptoms on here but very few answers! Good luck everyone

I just had this happen to me tonight. Thanks for all your input. Like dixongetsresults, I to have Hashimoto's, so I wonder if there's a correlation.

i am 26m.been having heart palps for few days now.been getting worse each day.cough a couple times today where i didnt cough previous days. never had anything like this b4. i have been more stressed than usual. drink coffee every day and a couple drinks every couple days. i gave up coffee for a day and didn't seam to help.maybe i'd have to give it up much longer. if stress is related to heart palps then heartburn could definitely be related. over this past summer i started having heartburn and had to take medicine every day to prevent it. i'm pretty sure it was stress that brought this on. havent had the heartburn in awhile but i think humidity and heat plays a factor and i work outside where it's now freezing out. the more stressed i get the more i breath different(taking breaths at irregular rate/holding my breath little longer than usual in between breaths)i wonder if this has to do w/ it. just wanted to throw this info out in case it helps anyone.

As all of you have commented, my symptoms are very similar, however, my coughing goes on during the day and not when lying down at night. I had gone to a cardiologist who ran and EKG and they did see the heart "fluttering" so they referred me to a specialist and they did a stress echo and saw it happen as well. She explained that they are PVC's (Pre-mature Ventricular Contractions). Basically what it means is that the heart chamber doesn't quite empty out with each contraction so it causes the fluttering feeling everytime more blood fills up the chamber and it's usually caused by stress. (Think of it like a bucket and each time you empty the bucket, some water stays in it but the next bucket of water coming in is the same amount so it overflows some of the water prior to it being emptied out and that is what causes that fluttering feeling). She also said it could be something that you could just have sporadically for the rest of your life - great, huh? It's all quite annoying. Hope that helps some.

me too, feeling the exact same symptom set as I type this. It is rather a scary feeling, sitting here at the kitchen table with my toddler. I have had extensive testing as well... and have been told by more than one cardiologist that it is PVC's (premature ventricular contractions). They told me it is relatively harmless, though strongly suggested I return to them should the situation worsen or change. I get the feeling it is still a bit of a mystery to them.
Something that struck me was one woman saying she first experienced it with marijuana usage, the same is true for me as a youth. Your description of your experiences could be mine.
I just try to focus on the positive, live every minute like it might be my last and be open to the wisdom of the universe... I'll go when I go, no point in ruining my time with too much worry I guess :-)
Magnesium supplementation in the evening seems to really help. Definitely cut out or strictly limit caffeine. Drink lots of water. I also supplement my diet with flax. I am wondering about the herbal medicine Foxglove... if anyone has any experience trying that for this symptom set please let me know :-)
Blessings.

I have had the same symptoms: diagnosis was ventricular ectopy. Reduce stress and caffeine and see if that helps!

Hello. I'm a 19 year old female and I have been experiencing heart palpatations within the two months. For about 4 days straight I had felt an increased heart rate in my chest and felt the urge to cough like it was catching as many of you seem to describe. The first few days I just felt my heart beating a little harder but it wasn't racing. My heartbeat became more pronounced in the evenings while laying down to sleep. I don't know if it was because I was stiil and things were quiet thus I could feel it more or what.
By like the 3rd day my the palpatations had peaked and were more intense, especially that night. I would have difficulty sleeping because I could feel it beating (and I sleep on my stomach) and worrying about it just made things worse. I confronted my mother about it and did some research and thought it might be an anxiety/panic attack. I had been going through some emotional stuff at the time so that seemed to explain things. Finding a possibly cause of my palpatations had eased my mind and for over a month I have had no problems.
Throughout those four or so days there was no pain/nausea/dizziness just a general discomfort in my chest. However last night I began to experience another episode of heart palpatations, but not to the same extent as the first.(much lighter) Is that what people call "fluttering"? My brother has been diagnosed with general anxiety disorder in which he occasionally has heart palpatations and my mother and I believe I may have it too. Anyone have any suggestions or comments? It would be greatly appreciated.

I didn't know what was happening or if there really was a correlation....feel a flutter of my heart and then have to cough. I exercise, have a low resting heart rate, eat right, am not overweight and I don't get out of breath easily so couldn't really imagine it was a heart defect.
I'd mention it to my friends or family and they'd just look at me and say, "nope - never heard of it." It's been happening on and off for years and just happened a few minutes ago. I decided to grab my laptop and see if there may be something to the feelings I've been experiencing.
Thanks so much for your posts - I feel better now knowing that it's relatively normal and not life threatening. Just in the process of buying a house and moving out of state so that could be the trigger...time to get back to Yoga!

I am a 49yr old healthy female with what I think could be diagnosed as free floating anxiety disorder. Also, over the years I have had more than enough reasons to be stressed. 11 years ago, during a difficult period in my life, I recall feeling heart palpatations. I thought I was going to die of a heart attack! These episodes have come and gone over the years. The single cough associated with the palpitations started a few years ago, and I feel it happens when my heart needs to regulate itself. I also get the "catching" feeling in my chest just before I cough. There is a feeling of pressure, and fullness in my chest during this time. I have flutterings, and it feels as if my heart is beating much faster than it should be for a short period of time. I am once again in a stressful period in my life, and today I became really worried as my heart feels as if it is beating irregularly a lot of the time. I sometimes wonder if it has something to do with the internal pacemaker, called the sinoatrial node, misfiring. I decided to look on the Internet and it seems that there are many of us experiencing the same symptoms. This is some what reassuring.
I work in the allied health field, and many years ago a colleague performed an EKG on me while testing some medical equipment. He was concerned that my heartbeat was abnormal, as I had an extra beat every now and again. I was referred to a well renowned Cardiologist who preformed a cardiac ultrasound on me. I forget the exact diagnosis, but it was nothing to be concerend about.
I must say that if the medical system was different in USA, if visiting a doctor wasn't so exorbitantly expensive, and if medical insurance companies weren't so eager to preclude anyone with any type of pre existing condition, I would be more inclined to visit a doctor and have this checked out professionally. I am also extremely sensitive to certain medications and energy drinks, for example cough medication and Red Bull energy drink. When I have taken these I have found that my heart beats extremely fast and I have had to lie down as I feel so bad. I remember many years ago when I was a teenager and diet pills were the rage, I had the same racing heart when I took them.

Hi guest,
Those extra beats are common and usually not serious. They are often caused by caffeine or other stimulants.
Try cutting back on your caffeine intake and see if they improve.
