I am so happy to find this thread! I thought I was going crazy with these heart palpitations. I am 31 year old female athlete. I work out a lot and I don't eat bad foods, drink caffeine or alcohol, or smoke. I've been rehabbing a serious knee injury so I am about 10 pounds overweight right now, and I can tell a huge difference in my heart.

I took Dayquil once in 2004 since I had a bad cold and needed to go to work. A few hours later I was in the ER with crazy SVT. I've had SVT only a few times since then -- when I was given a dose of Prednisone, when I got in an argument with my dad at my wedding rehearsal dinner, and right after my mom's funeral. All of which didn't surprise me at all!
:-)

Anyway, my PVCs have lately gotten a lot worse.

I've had an ECG, Holter monitor for a week, an MRA of my heart, and had a consultation about ablation. My cardiologist said this is all relatively common and not to worry. That's really hard, though, when you're trying to fall asleep and you can feel your heart beating hard!

I'm trying to get back in shape and reduce whatever stress I can. It's hard, though.

Thanks for all your input, everyone! I feel much better!

I also have this problem. Just turned 60, had this so bad for the last two months. Am seeing my cardiologist tomorrow after wearing a holter monitor. I saw him 4 months ago as my GP said I had high blood pressure - he said at the time I did not have high blood pressure, my heart was strong and nothing was wrong (did an ECG, EKG etc). Then this started and many nights it keeps me awake all night - basically my heart goes beat beat beat for 10 or so beats then thud. I am a worrier, and now after googling symptoms, keep thinking - a pain in my chest - a heart attack. A pain in my arm - a heart attack. This goes on all day and night so it is no wonder I am stressing myself!! It does seems to be worse after lunch and dnner and when I go to bed, so I wonder if it is something to do with caffene, I only have one cup of coffee a day but do drink a lot of Coke Zero. I guess because my father died of a heart attack that I am overly worried and this probably makes the symptoms worse.

I am soooooooo glad to find this thread.

I've been having similar palpations for the last six months. Sometimes they are followed by this cough and I can't stop the cough - it is like a cough I get when I have a chesty cough if you know what I mean - I can't suppress it.

Normally after a palpation and the follow-on cough, my throat is hoarse, I feel a bit chesty and I keep coughing as if I have a tickle in my throat - it then clears up within an hour normally.

My thyroid is slightly overactive and I thought this what was causing the palpations. Now, I am not sure. I am now in my 5th week of medication and they have started up again. I am not sure if they are stress related to be honest. We have just started trying for a baby and I am worring whether I am infertile so maybe this is why I am getting them again!

I've been having the same symptoms as described on this forum: "skipped" heart beats and the urge to cough after the palpitation. I had an appointment with a cardiologist, and he basically said that lots of people have palpitations and that this is probably nothing. But then he recommended a bunch of expensive tests. He essentially told me the tests were to protect him and not something I really needed. i cancelled my appointment for the tests. My family doctor is now treating me with antibiotics for the cough. I try to avoid caffeine, but chocolate is a big weakness of mine. A waitress in a steak house suggested that I drink Coke Zero when I told her that I didn't want a drink with caffeine in it. boy was she wrong. Coke Zero doesn't have any calories, but it sure does have caffeine. Be careful whose advice you take.

I have the same thing. I have read so many articles about this and that it is no big deal but it sure seems like it at the time. I cough and cough. My problem is definitely from stress. I can go for weeks without it happening and as soon as I get stressed about something, it starts again. There must be some sort of secretion from stress that makes the heart do that. I have to take some deep breaths and really try to calm down. I am 58. This started when my mother started having serious health issues and I am her caregiver now. I have been told that I will suffer more than my mother because of the stress. Stress is the biggest cause of health problems.

I too have this heart condition (whatever it is) I am going to be 40 this month (September) I was born with a Heart Murmur and yes I am overweight. I started having what I call a skipped heart beat in my 20's at times it is bad enough to where I have to cough so that my heart starts beating again. When this happens I can get dizzy and have to breath kind of heavily. I have had an EKG but of course did not have an episode at the time I was hooked up so the Doctors could not tell me anything. Today I was watching a T.V. show called, "Mystery Diagnosis" and on this show they had a woman that had all of these symptoms yet Doctors could not figure out what was wrong. To make a long story short I had some of the symptems that she did and so I looked on line at her Diagnosis (She was Diagnosed with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis) I was shocked to find out that this skipped heart beat is one of the symptoms. I also read all the stories listed on this sight and one of the first few stories a lady was also diagnosed with the same thing. You guys might want to check it out. I'm thrilled to find out that I'm not the only one who has these symptoms and welcome any current test results that you all my have been given.

This thing runs in my family. My mother had it and I have it too. The interesting thing about it, however, is that finally at 70 she had to get a pacemaker because she was diagnosed with sick sinus syndrome. You can read about sick sinus on wikipedia.

Please note that I am not saying that palpitation with urge to cough is sick sinus syndrome and needs needs a pacemaker. My mom was fine all her life and she told me to not worry too much (and she is a doctor). I am notifying you all to keep this information with you so that you can ask your doctor today about it or it might prove useful when you are 70! Maybe all of us who suffer with this have a tendency to develop sick sinus.

When she finally developed sick sinus the thing is that despite her being a doctor, other doctors hardly believed in her when she explained her symptoms. Mind you, symptom of sick sinus are scary but brief and soon there is no trace that you ever had anything. Basically she would feel for 15-30 seconds that she is going to die and by the time she went to a doctor all tests are normal. To cut a LOOOOONG story short, it was extremely difficult to diagnose what she had because it is rare. Basically the symptoms were fortunately created right in front of a team of leading leading cardiologists and only then did they figure it out.

Keep it in mind .. when things get tough in old age this information could help.

Take care and write to me if you like pkediyal@yahoo.com

i can't tell you how glad i am to find this thread.

Had this problem for years doctors saying nothing wrong and me worried like anything.

Have started with the cough for the first time over last few days so was very anxious until i read this thread.

I think its the not knowing that makes you stressed but to find a place where other people are having the same symptoms is very reassuring.

Pulmonary edema associated with heart failure as the heart fails pressure in the vein going through the the lungs starts to rise. As the pressure increases fluid is pushed into the air sacs (alveoli), resulting in shortness of breath and coughing. Simply as the hearts pumping action is reduced due to the heart failing, blood may back up. With the increased pressure blood than may flow into other areas of the body including the lungs resulting in a cough especially when you lie down. see a GP/cardiologist ASAP you may have heart problems. especially if heart problems are in your history and or your family's history...

I was diagnosed with severe obstructive sleep apnea in June 2007. I find if I have shallow breathing (hypo-ventilation) it occurs. This usually hits me when I am sitting in my recliner. I find my airway gets a bit more restrictive. If I stand up and move around I don't notice it. I am always coughing when sitting down. I also have GERD and I am quite a bit overweight and 43 year old male. It does go away when I retire for the night with my CPAP therapy.

Maybe some of you have OSA that is undiagnosed? You can be skinny and be young and still have it. Just a thought anyways. Good luck to you all

heart started "skipping beats" and EKG showed PVC's. Doctor set me up for nuclear scan/stress and echo and holter. But same as most of you, I get palpitations and a very general rushed anxious feeling when I go to bed. mostly normal during the day though now, wasn't the case a couple of weeks ago when for 3 days the skipped beats were constant. Not other symptoms, but feel like c**p due to lack of sleep. Benign my ass! :-)

I feel like a total hypochondriac and am hesitating to go to the doctor. I do seem to always have some little thing wrong with me. This is truly bugging me though. I never thought I'd read that other people had it too. Mine feels like a little muscle spasm in my heart, and only sometimes if it is a big enough spasm, do I feel like couphing. When I lay down it is much worse. Relaxing last night with my kids and husband watching a movie, I must have had twenty in a row. One was so big it made me jump. No heart conditions in the family. I do take anti-axiety medicine. This just started out of the blue maybe a week ago. I'll go ahead and quit morning coffee and any other caffeine. I'm 30 lbs overweight, but can jog and play tennis regularly.
Should I just buck up and go to the doctor?

Yeah, Rebop, go see a doctor.

99.9% sure it’s stress, but you’ll just worry about it until you get it checked out. I’m having the problem right now too. I went to the doctor last week and had a normal EKG and normal blood work. I was given a Holter monitor for 48 hours and like many others here, didn’t have a major episode during that time. It did pick up many minor irregularities though, which are usually caused by caffeine or stress (I’ve been off caffeine for 3 months now). I was given some Toperal XL (25mg.) but it hasn’t helped a lot in the 48 hours I’ve been taking it. The dose may need to be adjusted. I’m nearly positive my problem is stress, but controlling it is another issue. I think if I can just go a few days without an episode, I will quite dwelling on them they will go back to normal. I have always had them on occasion (if I drink too much caffeine or alcohol) and haven’t needed long term medications.

I had a problem with palpitations about 5 years ago and went through a barrage of tests. In the end I was told I had an extra electrical impulse in my heart, but not to worry about it. I was given Toperal XL then too but once I found out I wasn’t going to drop over dead, the palpitations stopped. I mean they literally stopped when I left the doctor’s office (without the meds). I had been having them for 3 or 4 months before I finally went to the doctor.

I’m glad I found this sight and that others have the coughing reflex too. I’ve mentioned the problem to more than one doctor and I know neither thought it had anything to do with the palpitations. Hopefully after reading all these posts, I will relax a little and my current bout will stop. Knowing all this, it’s so frustrating not being able to control the problem.

Hi

About 2 1/2 years ago this problem started for me. Like Cutter had a host of tests after seeing the doctor and the cardiologist. 24 hour holster monitor, exercise stress test and an echo cardiogram. All came out normal but did show ectopic beats (with the exception of the treadmill test). The cardiologist said that I was normal and had nothing to worry about.

The skipped beats are normal, everyone has them but they are noticed more when you are stressed. Mine come and go and I believe that stress and hormones play a part in this in a major way.

I had been through a massive period of stress when mine occurred.

I would urge anyone with this concern to seek medical advice to make sure that there is no under lying condition but as soon as you realize that you are not going to drop dead or have heart failure then they tend to slow down or stop but the likelihood is that they will come back at some point.

I still visit places like this site when I have a spate as it gives me reassurance! XD
