Hello Lauraleigh,
I am a 46 year-old Caucasian male in Dallas, GA experiencing the EXACT same thing you described so perfectly above. I went to the ER, did all the bells and whistle tests and everything came out fine. This coughing, though, just started a few days ago and it is hurts deep inside the chest to cough. I do not smoke, never have. I do drink coffee, or rather, I did until my wife said, NO MORE!! So now, I pour a cup of coffee for the smell and drink water in an attempt to trick my brain. Still, these flutters are still there, sometime as many as 15 to 20 or more a day. DOH'P!! There's another one right now!! UGH!!!
I will get some cough drops to see if that helps. Thank you for blogging about this. I am scared. I do not want to die at 46. I have a 15 year-old daughter about to turn 25...I mean 16. HA! She needs her daddy!

Could you have an extra accessory site in your heart? If so it is easily corrected with lase ablation of the site.

Interesting stuff. I used to get the heart-skip when I was in elementary school, along with an extremely fast heartbeat, on a semi-regular basis. As I aged through my teen year, the symptoms subsided in frequency and severity. Through my early twenties, it remained a non-issue ... until my mid-twenties. From the time I was (about) twenty-six through thirty-three, the skips were frequent and intense. On numerous occasions, I visited my physician to no avail.
In my mid-thirties, I read about a New York Giants player that was experiencing a similar issue and it was traced directly to the cold medicine he took. The player removed chocolate and caffeine from his diet and the symptoms all but dissipated. I tried the same thing, beginning with any medication that contained ephedrine or pseudo ephedrine. I then removed caffeine and chocolate from from diet and quit smoking. To my surprise, the symptoms disappeared ... for about fifteen years.
Last week, for the first time since my late-thirties, I felt that old "skip and thud" prompting me to once again cough. It quickly subsided, but has sporadically returned over the past ten day ... including a few minutes ago, prompting me to do an online search.
While I'm now fifty-two, I still do not smoke, consume (no more than) one bottle of pop/soda per day and do not eat much candy or chocolate. Unfortunately, while I was 190 pounds in my late twenties, I am now 265 pounds (down from 286). Though I'm not obese, I know I need to lose some weight, even though I do not look nearly as heavy as I am. I have marginally high blood pressure (taking meds) and anxiety (taking meds), but my biggest issue may be that I have chronic sleep apnea.
While I have no idea if any of these "maladies" contribute to my current cardiac issue, I'm pretty sure that they are not helping. The frustrating part of this is that I'm pretty sure my body cannot handle its own issues like it did when I was half my age, or younger. I really don't worry about it. If I go, I go. I just don't want to be "doing the crappy" at work or in front of my family, but there doesn't seem to any more acceptance that this is an issue than there was 20+ years ago.
One more thing. Throughout my life, it seems that I have been "twitchier" than most people I know. Some twitches in area like my eyelids remain for months at a time. I often wonder if their is more or a chemical imbalance than an definite heart problem that is the cause of our respective problems.

I wouldn't worry about dying because of it. I've worked in non-clinical healthcare for nearly thirty years and from the conversations I've had with cardiac co-workers, I'm told it's no big deal and that it is extremely common ... for whatever that's worth.

I had exactly the same thing happen just then that everyone describes. I just googled heart palpitations and cough and this page came up. It felt like my heart catched, I coughed and then I had the palaptations. I'm not stressed, and not suffering any anxiety, I have low vitamin D and Iron and possible Hypothyroid symptoms, but otherwise good health, good BMI, I exercise moderately and eat well. Just weird that others have suffered the exact same thing. It caught me by surprise when it happened.

Any news on your condition? Your symptoms sound much like what I have been experiencing. Would appreciate any update you could provide. Thanks!

I have dealt w this for years on and off, ever since college. I am 47, in shape, play tennis, low blood pressure, born with a slight heart murmur but have little stress. It has gotten worse lately. I wonder if it is hormone related as well. I am menopausal. I guess there is comfort in knowing I am not alone!

I am a 42 y/o female who started experiencing heart palpitations about 2 months ago.. I have never had anything like this before I am healthy and active. I started having palpitations so I went to my regular doctor who gave me a Holter monitor to wear for a day I had some extra beats is what he said , describing them as pre-ventricular contractions (PVC) he referred me to cardiologist and they did an echocardiogram and a plain stress test. Everything came back normal. It went away for about 3 weeks and now is back! Everyday for over 2 weeks now I have been having palpitations with a dry cough. I know they are
Related! My gynecologist says I'm too young for menopause and thinks it's a GI issue. I have had a chest
X-Ray done and a thyroid sono and Bloodwork and all was normal. It's driving me crazy bc it happens mostly when I am at rest and lying down. I went for nuclear stress test now and am waiting for results. Going to see GI doc next week. I do not drink caffeine or eat badly. I also stopped drinking alcohol altogether but I may start again to relax myself! Lol hoping its anxiety and will go away soon fingers
Crossed!
