I'm amazed so many people are experiencing these symptoms. I too have been experiencing them. I started having palpitations 4 months ago after I had been working out. I've experienced palpations on and off every couple of years during my adult life, so I wasn't too concerned about it. Those episodes lasted a few days and was normally attributed to excessive caffeine. However, this latest episode, I had noticed they were more intense and uncomfortable and I even got dizzy a couple of times. I went to the doctor and got an EKG. It was normal so I was referred to a cardiologist and wore the heart monitor for 24 hours. I had plenty of palpitations during the 24 hours but the monitor only recorded a few "Notable" episodes and the report was considered normal. I thought maybe it was stress related so I planned a trip to Hawaii to get away. The funny part was that two weeks before my trip everything went back to normal. I didn't experience any palpitations or at least I didn't feel them and I just felt better overall. I figured maybe I had some crazy bug and finally got over it. Unfortunately, my second day of my Hawaiian Vacation I woke up in the middle of the night with real intense palpitations. I couldn't sleep and was about to go to an emergency room because it felt like I was having to force myself to breathe. Things got better that morning but the palpitations never stopped since. Every day I feel them and now I get episodes of chest tightening or feeling like I need to breathe deeply and it's usually accompanied by a sensation to cough. It's feels like my diaphragm has episodes of weakness. It a very strange sensation. It comes and goes but never for long. So I guess I'll go back to the doctor to see if there is something else they can do. Thank you for sharing and I hope you get better soon.

I too have the same condition. Little funny you mentioned cough drops. That is what I do even when I'm sleeping. Having sleep apnea and using a cpap doesn't help matters either. Wish you well!

I have the absolute same problem, I'm a 37 y.o. female. It started over a year ago but got a lot worse in the last three months. The shortness of breath and the flutter makes me panic at times. The cough is bad and sometimes I cough for hours, until my throat hurts. My EKG was normal, I had no bad symptoms when they took it. The lungs are clean and the stomach is healthy so all problems related to those organs have been ruled out. I did try acupuncture, in the last week. I've had 5 sessions, my acupuncturist said I need 12 in total to eliminate the problem. And let me tell you, she knows what she is doing!!! After the first two sessions all the symptoms were completely gone, for a whole day and I felt this calm and quietness inside. She warned me it will get worse before it gets better. After that I had a very bad couple of days (the weekend - no acupuncture sessions). Now, after the 5th session, I am having a two weeks break and I feel much better. The flutters do come, but more rarely and the cough is almost gone! Will go back for the next batch in a couple of weeks and, hopefully, we'll get to the end of this thing that conventional medicine does not know what to call.

I have also had this. Coughing resets the rhythm of your heart. It is called premature ventricular contractions. Your hesrt gets a signal to best when there isn't any blood in the chamber. That is eha5t you ferl. My Dr gave me a blood med and it stopped ot. Also magnesium is a good supplement that helps .

Sounds like you might have GERD which can cause chest pains and have weird (for lack of a better word) effects on your heart

My story is that I have experienced strange palpitations since I was about 13 yrs old. I felt like I was going to faint one warm sunny morning. Nothing much happened in my teens but in my 20's I had other symptoms that came to light. I had a lot of strange small symptoms cold, ear problems, rosacea in my cheeks, psoriasis etc and also irritable bowel syndrome. in my 30's the palpitations became more noticeable and my energy was not what it used to be. I would get palpitations when I was relaxed more than when stressed because that is often the way with palpitations. If I got too cold I would get palpitations, if I ate certain foods I would get palpitations etc. Some were like my heart stopped and some were running faster. The doctors said that it was anxiety, panic attacks and all kinds of stuff. I went to a specialist and he said that it was not my imagination and that there was a high risk of sudden death especially in women and there was basically nothing that I could do. He found a murmur also. I went home and thought about it, I was quite shocked. I decided to go to another specialist to see what they would say. The second guy said that I was grand and that enqouldbtake out a life insurance policy on me. Can you believe the how confused I was then. Eventually in my early 40's I was feeling mug worse. My breathing was not so good, exertion made me breathless, I was more anxious, I got breathless even when I lay down. It was worse in one side. I was feeling faint in a queue at the bank and had to sit down. I felt like I was going to die a few times, once when watching Basic Instinct ha ha (because of the tension in the thriller) and had to lie down in the floor to try to get my breath back. It was really scary. Eventually I went to a doctor that I knew from childhood and explained my case. She said that my blood pressure was up and that I should go to A&E because she said that my lungs sounded like there was fluid on them. she said not to say that this had been going on for a long time but to say that it came on suddenly. They hospital kept me for tests. When the echo was done they discovered that I had a lot of pressure between my heart and my lungs, and my heart was enlarged on the right side. They sent me for an angiogram to find out what the problem was and even then it was only spotted by accident. I had a congenital heart defect and was in severe heart failure. They scheduled me for open heart surgery. I was very lethargic by this stage and even sitting in the car at the supermarket waiting for my partner to come out was scary because on a warm day I couldn't get a breath. It was really scary. I was operated on eventually, my heart eventually went back to a normal size although the valve is still floppy which causes some minor problems but my heart was considerably weakened due to the length of tIme that it took to diagnose and treat the problem. I am on medication for the weak side (left) to help it to pump (very effective) but still get weird symptoms from time to time. Some of the palpitations are due to digestive issues which can be relieved by identifying the food responsible (I am allergic to cod liver oil capsules and salmon) apparently and also some home baking can cause palpitations. If I get cold Inhet palpitations so not all palpitations are dangerous but it is important to identify what you have. I was also diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease Scleroderma (it only took 40 years to identify that) and that also causes some heart problems for me. Always keep at the doctors until you know exactly what you are dealing with. Some things are pretty normal even if they seem otherwise but always also look for answers. You never know how simple it how complex a problem is and doctors don't always get into it until you are a lot further into something and showing more pronounced symptoms. Hope this helps.

I have same symptoms. I have been diagnosed with Hashimoto's, so thought that might be causing it. At the beginning the rapid heartbeat usually happened in the middle of the night. Then I was diagnosed with gluten intolerance, and once I stopped eating gluten, they stopped. Now it's happening again (even though I'm still gluten-free) throughout the day and I'm thinking it's the Hashimoto's acting up.

Thank you, this was incredibly helpful. I have never experienced any of these episodes until a recent high stress situation. Now, after 2 separate incidents of intense chest pain, I have this all the time. My doctor said I was having anxiety attacks and gave me Ativan to help. The medicine does help when I have symptoms. I'm not a fan of the anxiety attack diagnosis. I'm not really an emotional person, and never had any mental coping issues. I suspected the extreme stress I experienced was responsible for my condition. Your post reinforces this belief.

Wow. Good to know so many others have the SAME EXACT symptoms as me. Not that I'm happy we are all having this issue, but it calms me to know that most of what I've been reading is to just cut down on caffeine, smoking, and to go work out. Which are ALL something I need to start doing. I've had the skip and thud every now-and-then, but today it was so frequent I had to look it up. For me it does get WAY worse when I'm laying down and trying to go to sleep. Heck. It's 2:30am and I have to be at work at 6am... So... Either I cut down on the caffeine or go to work a zombie. Good times!

I'm having similar episodes to everyone! I went to the hospital because I freaked and started crying I'm a healthy 23 year old female and the hospital did blood work, took x-rays of my chest and everything seemed fine my heart is healthy. I was given any test possible and I'm healthy. They said this could be stress and anxiety the cause to my symptoms! Idk what to do! Should I seek help from a cardiologist or should I try maybe finding therapy in regards to my stress like yoga or something to relief stress? I don't feel like anything dramatic has happened to me to cause this stress instead I've been kinda excited since I just graduated college and I'm on track in life with everything I've wanted. These symptoms seem to happen when I lay in bed or I'm just relaxing I feel this rush in my heart it starts to beat fast and I get dizzy and I feel weak my body feels a intense fatigue and I just feel weak and I feel ligh headed I don't know what's wrong with me I'm healthy and don't seem to understand how the doctors can't determine what's wrong with me. Please help with suggestions!

It sounds like atrial fibrillation to me. I'd see a cardiologist to confirm. Most likely you'll wear a monitor that records your heart rate over a period of time. When my afib first started I thought I was having a heart attack or that my heart would just stop beating (after the heart racing my heart would slow so much it honestly felt like it would stop). I don't believe it's related to stress, personally. It's just bad luck or bad genes or whatever. I do know there are definitely things that can trigger it. Number one thing for me is dehydration. If I get dehydrated my heart will go crazy. Number two trigger is caffeine. Too much coffee or even soda can trigger it. Trigger number three is too much sugar which can come in th form of sweets or carbs or even alcohol. Regular exercise can help. If u get an episode don't freak out. Go for a brisk walk or do pushup or situs or treadmill or eliptical or something. There are a lot of people with afib. Many don't realize they have it. It shouldn't hamper your lifestyle, except watch that you don't get dehydrated or get too much caffeine or sugar. It's easy to get dehydrated in the summer. Just get used to carrying a large water bottle with you all the time. Oh and you might consider taking a baby asprin or two daily. Th3 cardiologist will most likely want ro start you on blood thinnwr like warfarin, but ive had my afib for 6 years or more and im 55 and all i take is 2 baby asprin daily. Good luck.
