I have had this problem for about 10 years now and it happened on Mother's Day and I was relaxed talking with friends and I was fine and all of a sudden my heart felt like it stopped for a second and I coughed. I've been to the doctor I've been to the hospital for it. So they ended up doing an EKG. I ran on a treadmill they did an ultrasound of my heart and nothing is wrong . Someone said to me it is hormones and if you notice this will happen right before your period or on your period. So rest assured, stop worrying, your heart is fine! it's all hormones.

I have had the heart palpitations and found out I had a pericardio cyst on my heart, had it removed and two years latter the same thing. Only this time a much larger cyst. A year has gone by and I am back to having palpitations which is causing me to cough. My Cardiologist said I have leaky valves as well.

That is interesting! I was diagnosed with Graves Disease which went into remission. I never even thought about there being a connection. Haven't been to see anyone in awhile for my thyroid even though my doctor said I have to keep seeing a specialist. So expensive. I guess I better make an appointment. Thank you for sharing!

My palpitations make me cough. It's like weird flutters that cause an involuntary cough. Is this my body's way of correcting my heart for me?

I found my tribe!!! What a relief to know that there are people experiencing my same symptoms. This is my story...starting having palpations about 4 yrs ago at 38ish, around the same time I had gained about 15 lbs, my mensual cycle was coming every 2 weeks...figured it was my thyroid or something hormonal. Went to my primary care doctor, who ordered blood work, everything came back normal. So, she said it was stress/anxiety. I am an anxious person and I had a lot going on in my life back then. So, I kind of bought into the idea but here's the thing...it mainly happened when I would lay down...to go to sleep...to chill on the couch and watch some tv. My doc gave me an Rx to correct my cycle and one for antidepressants. Took the antidepressant for a couple of month, not my thing. Over the years my palpitations have gotten worse. Although they are intermittent. They come and go, they happen upright or laying down, exercising or at rest, caffeine no caffeine. I can not find a pattern! Last year I went to cardiologist because I had palpations for a couple months straight with few periods of relief. One day it felt like my heart was just flopping around inside my chest. You could see my pulse in my carotids, a little scary. He ordered a halter and an echo. Echo was normal. Didn't do the halter because by the time they had one available I wasn't having any symtoms. Go figure:) I was pretty much symtom free for about a year. And then it started again...new cardiologist, who is ordering a ridiculous about of diagnostic studies. One of which is an MRI of cervical spine. I do have a herniated disk at C5-6, which is impinging on my spinal cord. Still waiting to do my other test. But I've been reading about cervical heart syndrome and I was wondering if any of you have issues with your cervical spine? Desperate to try and figure this out.

Hello, I, obviously, have the same problem. I looked up several websites and did not really find a clear answer. I feel the "flutter" but I feel it in my throat, and then I have to cough a bit. I think it might be thyroid, but am not sure. It feels scary as it king of feels like heart, but it is weird that it is in my throat. It sure feels like the heart skips and for a very short moment like my breath stops too. I had this several years ago, and just many of you, had a holtor monitor, and of course, it did not happen while wearing it. I did the stress test and it was all fine. I guess a visit to endocrinologist and a family doctor is in my near future......

I have had something similar. I usually notice it after I have eaten a specific food that apparently has something in it that I am allergic to. I have had it after Chinese, certain cookies, one time apples. Usually its the Chinese food. I had to stop eating one of the meals there that would cause it every time. I don't have the same problem w/ other items there. I also had the same reaction when I ate a cookie from azips pizza the other day. I wasn't sure that was what caused it so I tried it again a different day-same reaction. Whatever the thing is that is in each of these foods is the only thing I can find as a cause. When I eat them it's the only time so far that I find I have an issue- I would suggest trying a food diary & see if you can find any correlation for yourselves. It has worried me since heart trouble runs in the family but so long as I am careful not to eat certain foods I seem to have no issue...

I have the same thing and I suffered AF and VT I see a cardiologist regularly after my stay in the coronary care unit. I described this coughing feeling to him and said it feels like my heart hit my lung when I had a palpation, he had a little snuggle actually. He said it's the change in pressure in my chest which causes me too cough. So very interesting I thought, hope this helps.

I have dealt with this issue for many years. When I was in high school I have to get a fluttering feeling in my heart which would then cause me to cough to make it stop. I went to the doctor and was put on a heart monitor to records my heart beats. My doctor at the time suggested I have a heart murmer and placed me on medication. I do not remember what the name of the medicine was however, I t stopped once I took the medicine. After a while and being a teenager, I stopped taking the medicine. I am now 27 and recently started having the feeling again. What I have noticed is that it occurs more when I drink coffee or my stress levels are high. I am going to try cutting back on the caffeine and perhaps doing some stress relief things. (YOGA) in particular.
