A normal adult heart rate averages 60 to 100 beats per minute (bpm). Heart rate increases may be driven by increased oxygen needs, as well as many physical or emotional triggers. These triggers may include:
stress
anxiety
fever
heavy smoking
alcohol
excessive caffeine consumption
respiratory or other illnesses
hyperthyroidism
anemia
the use of certain decongestants and cough medications
Abuse of illegal drugs or misuse of prescription or over-the-counter medications can cause potentially life-threatening changes in heart rate or rhythm. Use of certain dietary supplements -- such as goldenseal, oleander, ma huang, motherwort or ephedra -- may also raise your resting heart rate and cause potentially life-threatening heart rhythm problems.
Keep in mind that your resting heart rate will vary depending on the time of day.

I had an episode of very heavy pounding heart with pressure that was painful but not stabbing. After that I have had an increased heart rate of 90-100 at resting rate, before it was 60-70 resting. What is happening?
