I had my Dr. appt yesterday after waiting a month. I have minimal hearing loss, and retracted eardrums. Their solution was to give me a prescription on Flonase and prednosone. Both steroids. I have never been good with anything that goes near my nose. But I'm willing to give it a shot. I'm supposed to pop my ears 3 times a day. Then go back in a month. I'm really hoping this works. I guess the pred..will make me gain 10 to 15 lbs right b4 summer hooray..:( But as I said I will try anything to get rid of this infernal racket in my ear. I want to feel human again. Hope this helps someone in need.

I have had the same whooshing sound in my right ear for over a year now. I did all the scans and tests which came back all clean except for a slight sinus infection. My doctor (specialist) suggested right away a minor operation to correct a "slight" deviated septum (which is strange because I have no problems breathing and never snore) and to clean out the sinuses. They're convinced that this will fix the noise in my ear but I'm very hesitant to have surgery however minor it may be. Before the surgery option, they had me do a week of antibiotics and antihistamenes which had no effect. The first doctor I went to when the noise began said it was a buildup of phlem and gave me nasal spray to use for 10 days, but nothing changed. If I lay down on my back without a pillow it seems to get a lot quieter. But it sounds like the only thing to do is to wait it out...

wow! so glad there's a lot of people with this..having read all the post it seems like there are a multitude of things causing it...

I've had it nearly a week now, and last night was the first time it kept me awake! was so so loud, everything I tried, moving around, pillow over the ear, nothing. It's slowly driving me insane! It's there, all day. Louder at night.

I'm 21, I don't drink, or smoke, have my own horse so always excersising, I walk everywhere, have actually lost weight and work in a pre-school. Nothing fits..have to listen to music to block it out...

My dad had an acoustic neuroma so I know a little bit, been woth him for MRI's, ENT appts and hearing tests.

Am hoping it can be solved quickly... really don't want another sleepless night. Have booked a appointment with my GP tomorrow!

Hello, I have been experiencing constant headaches at the back of my head and when I lay down on my tummy I hear a pulsing, whipping sound.  I  think that its just from stress, lack of sleep or improper pillows, but I often wonder is it more than that.  Should I be worried?

I have had this for years. I don't get the headaches though. But I do have a little dizziness for a brief period. Especially when I lean my head back or look up (during the short spells only). The sound is SO loud! It comes and goes though. I used to worry about it a lot and it was a little scary at times. After all the test I have had I believe it to be benign. Just an aggravation. But you should still let your doctor know all about it. I know how you feel. You feel like you're going to explode!!! But I never did after all these years. I believe that fear feeds it to some extent once you are aware of it. If you focus on the sound and the sensations related to it, it will worsen. What helps me is knowing that it has no physical effect on me and lessens after a period of time. This includes the swooshing pulse sounds (really creepy) and the ringing. The ringing can be caused by loud music, or using headphones a lot. I'm a musician so I just except what has happened in that respect. But the swooshing is different. I watch my blood pressure and cholesterol, and go to the doctor every six months. My doctor even said he has it sometimes too.
Good luck to everyone that is bothered my this and hang in there!

Hello everyone, I'm Ann from Poland and I have very similar problem with my left ear. Well, I dont exactly hear my heartbeat but something similar. It started about three months ago when I was sitting in front of my notebook and then I heared irregular pulsing in my ear. At the beginning I thought its sth normal or temporary but its horrible...As I've said its is not constant, its rather irregular. It wakes me up in the middle of the night and I cant sleep then, it appears during relaxation time and lasts 5 minutes, 1 hour or <as today> all dsay and all night. Sometimes I have a fear that it wont stop and I'll hear it all my life. I'm so scared.I visited gp<belittled>, laryngologist<belittled> and now, neurologist and I must wait for the scan...I'm taking some silly pills to widen my arteries or something but it dont work. I would really like to sleep well and would like to have a feeling that everything is going to be ok. Im writing here because there is not much websites about this issue in my country-but believe me or not-here are so many people with this problem too!! I really hope my note is readible and please people, write about this problem! We are not alone!!

Greetings from Poland
btw where are you guys from?

I have had the same throbbing in the right ear for a while now.

I was quite worried since I did not know what to do to get rid of it.

Recently I went through a chinese-type scan and was told the

throbbing had to do with the effort the heart is making to pump blood -

bad cholesterol is depositing in my blood vessels - little elasticity etc.

A plausible reason because I'm very 'sedentary' - very, very little physical exercise.

I read about your difficulties because my mother has the same problem! I really would like to ask a few Q's! Did any of you have high Glu, BP or Kidney problems. Previous damage to the ear dum! In my opinion it is difficult for any GP to assess damage to middle or anterior ear! From personal experiance I know that it takes 6 month and up to 2 year and longer for nerve damage to heal! Pressure caused by high Glu can lead to Glycoma and I can imagine that it can also cause damage to the auditory nerve! Inflammation or damage to arteries and veins may due to high blood pressure or infection(bacterial in the middle ear and viruses that affect the nervous system e.g. have any of had fever blisters - manageable but not cureable) that may also cause pressure or damage to the nerves. Any increase of fluid in the middle ear or nervous system related to the areas in Q may also have the same effect! Crystal and blocked draining tubules in the ear may have some role to play!

In my own opinion is that if the damage occurred it will take a long time to heal and it may be come permanent if the cause remains unchecked or is not managed!

There are certain allergies, Immune diseases , and drugs(meds)  also have an effects(toxic) on the auditory neves.  OD of asprin ++.  My mother started cortisone treatment for sudden unexpected Utricaria. Dr said it was related to seasonal changes. The cortisone affected the Glu and her BP also spiked and she said that the ear exam prefomed prior by the sister seeing the Dr was uncomfortable!

I read that putting on grey noise during the night may relieve some of the aggrevation!  Any other advice will be appreciated!

I started hearing my heartbeat in my right ear after a stomach flu in 1998.  I also had many tests done to try to find the cause.  None were successful.  In 2004, I was diagnosed with stage 2 Hodgkin's lymphoma.  I still can hear it at times, but I don't think it is as bad as it used to be, or maybe I'm just used to it now.

HI, I know this thread is old, but I've been searching online with the same symptoms and came across this post. I have EXACTLY the same symptoms as you and it is terrifying! My doctor seems unconcerned. I began having jaw pain a year before the pulsing sound and now I have ear fullness as well. I wonder if it's TMJ related but my docs say no. I also hear the rushing sound when I turn my head to the right or bend over quickly. Very strange!
