OK, I am now about 3 weeks out and I am beginning to enjoy life again. There is a slight pain still during BM's but I am able to go like I used to without a Sitz Bath and without sitting in a hot bath tub afterwards to relieve pain. There is no more pain after the BM's and I am now almost done with my recovery. Few days ago I had 5 BM's in one day and I was fine each time and did not need to take a pain pill or sit in a hot tub. Life is starting to be good again. Good luck everyone. If you are under 50 and you have a strong mind, I recommend this surgery. Just make sure you find a good physician. The first week is the hardest, with first 3 days being like hell. However, after that it is all down hill.

I went through surgery exactly a month ago and all I can say is I am happy I did the op. The pain I went through before was nothing compared to the pain of a week after the surgery when passing the bm, but it was for a short time. My hermorrhoids were stage 4 and I thought they'd heal overtime. Little did I realise they were getting out of hand and they took pretty all my time of comfort. My wife used to pity me and say "the pain you are going through seems will never end as for me, when I'm in that pain I know at the end of it I'll be having a baby on my hands and it'll be over". I went for surgery a day after I decided it was enough of this suffering, and the lights were out in like 30 seconds in the theatre, thats if I could count. When I woke up, I couldn't sit up because my whole bosom was covered with bandages and I asked the nurse why I was covered up like a mummy. Although I felt hungry I was scared to eat because the s..t hole was blocked with bandages. It took 20hrs to be removed and right then I took my 1st sitz bath which was provided at the hospital. I had a combination of drugs to sedate pain that I constantly pushed into my system through drip and It helped a lot. I was discharged 23hrs since the surgery and I started my own ordeal. My plan was to stay ahead of pain and it did work to a certain extent until my 1st bm after 5 days of accumulated waste which I was scared to dump because I wasn't sure if the fissures were ready for it. I have been taking Gen-Payne capsules and some anti-biotics 3 times a day and they gave me comfort and a lot of constipation I guess. I remember the morning when finally had to drop the waste and my system had no pain killer. I went through pain that I've never felt before. I tried to stop the process and the rectum was already filled with dump and dropped what I could and headed for the kitchen to eat a paw paw and I was able to take pain killers. To cut the long story short, be ahead of pain. Always take your sitz bath and keep the wound clean at all times. If there is discharge, clean it with cotton pad soaked in antiseptic. I attempted to start work a week after surgery since i felt better and 2 days after I couldn't stand it and stayed home for another week. Ir is important that you avoid disturbing the wound by doing a lot of manual work. Stay home for at least 2 weeks and there after take easy. If I have to do it again, yes I will do it but I am more determined to avoid getting them again, help me God.

I just had the procedure done last week and today is day 6 post op and I have to say that I am feeling a lot better. I was soooooo worried of getting this procedure done because of everything I was reading on the Internet and how much pain I would have after but I knew it had to be done. Well they were not lying about the pain but here is the deal. Day one post op I was in extreme pain and nothing seemed to help and that day I couldn't do anything even if I wanted too. I wasn't able to urinate so they stuck a catheter inside me to relief some pain and urinate and so I could go home. At the hospit they gave me morphine on top of some other pain medicine and nothing worked.. That is the only day I felt pain like that in my life. But no it goes down the 2nd day! Pain level went from 10 to about an 8 but I was able to move slowly to go pee and shower and that's about it. Please please, use the Sitz bath in the first few days because it is true what they say, it helps so much with the pain. I don't even know how many times I did the Sitz bath the first few days but I was a lot. I don't have a bath so I just showered with warm/hot water after and that was good for me. On the 3rd day, the pain and discomfort was still at about an 8 but I got off the pain medicine given to me by my doctors because of the fear of constipation and hard bowl movements. Btw, I was still not going to the restroom for bowel movements. My diet was all liquids for the first 3 days due to the fear of having a bowel movement so I stayed away from solid food. This worked because on day 4 I had a small bowel movement and no pain and no blood! Day four the pain level was at a 5/6 and It was mostly due to the spasms I would have but then I would soak in the Sitz and it would just go away. Day 5 the pain discomfort was at a 3/4 and I felt my stomach was about to explode cause I knew a real bowel movement was coming and I was terrified. That is when I read this thread about having your bowel movements in the Sitz bath. I was willing to try anything and sure enough IT WORKED!!! It came out and I had no pain I dumped it and rinsed out and sat down again but had no need to go again. I showed to clean myself and that's been my routine. Today is Monday 3-16-15 and I had my surgery last Tuesday. I woke up this morning and once again a major bowel movement in the Sitz bath and no pain but this time with a little blood but nothing major and back in the shower I went. I am also doing the Tylenol and Ibprofen combination and it is working wonders. I'm walking around the house but still trying to rest as much as possible. The thing to consider if you have this surgery is that you will be out of work for at least a week....That is minimum! Don't plan to do anything and just rest. I think the reason my pain has gone down so quickly and the bowel movements didnt hurt like a lot of people were saying is because I rested and was on the couch laying down and doing very little standing. Resting while recovering is very important. Now I just have to get my muscles back in my legs and back to starts really being able walk some more but not until after the week and I mean minimum walking just so you bod can start getting used to that. My wife and family helped me so much and having a support system really made a huge difference in my recover phase. Thoughts and prayers for a fast recovery for everyone who will be going through this surgery! Know that the pain does subside and does does get easier! Key to a fast recovery- Sitz bath- tylemol and Ibprofen/ get off the pain med from the doc as soon as you can! Warm baths/ showers. Plenty of water. No solids for the first 2 days minimum solids on day 3 so your bowel movemtns won't hit you right off the bat. Bowel movemtns in the Sitz bath! And of course, rest and recover and try not to move much for the first few days! Good luck! This surgery is worth it especially if it was given you complications like anemia like myself!

What a great article, thanks so much for sharing. I'm 3 days post-op and wondering what I let myself in for! In fact I didn't, I went in for a colonoscopy and to check out a fissure, and out came four big haemorrhoids while I was under. It's just all pain, and my current routine is basically bed to bath. Those warm baths are heaven and I understand fully sh*****g in the bath although I haven't done so yet. How life can reduce us to the basics when survival is all we care for. What new perspective, I will appreciate every moment of wellness once I'm through this one! Thanks again, it's kind of helped!

I would like to add to what you have mentioned about having the hemorrhoidectomy surgery. I had my surgery on 20 April 2015 and the pain is just as everyone described throughout this thread and various other forums I have read. I am a male and of course never had a child but that pain reminds me of what I have seen in a delivery room so I imagine it's as painful as having a child if not worse. However on a positive note, in time is does tend to go away. The first two days after surgery I did not get a lot of sleep because of the amount of water I was drinking and of course the pain. I was in the bathroom pretty much every half hour to pee. It also felt like I wanted to have a bowel movement (BM) but nothing would come out but it was painful just sitting there and thinking about it. You body reacts naturally to pain and what it wants to do so I just let things took their natural course that of course with the recommendations by the doctors office. Such as drinking lots of water, doing the sitz-bath, taking recommended medications and applying those creams i.e. Hydrocodone/APAP (Vicodin) for pain, Colace a good stool softner along with metamucil, and Proctozone-HC 2.5% cream for your bottom, fresh up wet ones instead of toilet paper to wipe with after bm's and kotex maxi pads to catch the drainage until you're bottom is healed. I also recommend eating Fiber One cereal, lots of fruits i.e. apple, grapes, watermelon, grits, eggs, oatmeal, and vegetable salads. These all worked for me. In the end, I was into the sixth day before I felt normal again and the pain was manageable. I cut back on the pain medication but continued everything else. My bm's are not as painful as before and I feel as if I am almost back to normal. I highly recommend this procedure to anyone that is suffering from major hemorrhoid problems and the key to a fast recovery is rest first, hydrocodone/APAP (Vicodin), colace, metamucil, and proctozone-HC 2.5% or any recommended cream, fresh up wet ones, and kotex maxi pads. Foods to eat high in fiber; Fiber One cereal, fruits i.e. apple, grapes, watermelon, grits, eggs, oatmeal, and vegetable salads. Good luck and I look forward to any and all replies. If I can make it thorough this at my age, you can as well..

Any updates anyone like to share? I had the opp 4 days ago and felt like I was about to pass out after my bm - bm were 'soft' all I've been eating since the opp is fruit, veg, taking lots of meds (paracetamol, ibuprofen) stool softeners (movicol and fibogel) and lots of water (at least 3 ltrs) otherwise I'm still here reading these posts in bed feeling sorry for myself but not regretting having it done just yet! When did people start to notice a difference?

I just had an external one the size of a walnut removed 3 days ago. I have to advise anyone who gets this done to eat the Vicodin as soon as you know you're going to take that 1st poop. Let it kick in please! I am a person who has suffered two separate broken necks(c2, and c5) in his life and I will say that the first poop I took the day after surgery hurt worse than anything in my experience. I did not take Vicodin in time, and was probably really close to going into shock. My wife had just come home to me screaming for her as I was about to pass out. She came into the bathroom and I was sweating profusely everywhere, shaking, and was white. Just please know that the drugs will help, and subsequent poops are waaaaaay less painful. Just keep taking Miralax and stay on your regular poop schedule. And eat the drugs!!!!!

Thank you for the sitz bath info. I had a thrombosed hemm excised and drained of blood clots ten days ago at the urgent care. I said yes to the procedure because I had not been able to sit for a month, and my doc said it would heal within a week. Unfortunately some veins were nicked and the bleeding would not stop so I had to have internal and external stitches the next day. The BM's are the worst part; I feel better in the morning and then have five small BM's in the sitz bath and am in terrible pain the rest of the day. My doctor says that it should feel better by now and is sending me to another surgeon. Does this pain and inflammation seem normal? Help!

30 y/o male.

I did the procedure January 13 2016 because it was bleeding already. Being my first surgery ever, i was scared as hell going into the operating room. i was in the hospital from January 13 afternoon and they discharged me January 15 noon.

I was back to work January 18 although i was only reporting to work for 4 hours at a time, the remaining i had to work at home because i had to do the sitz bath. the doctor gave me antibiotics, hemorid, and arcoxia for a week.

January 23 i went to see my doctor and told me that the wound is healing up well and i can already go back to regular activities but no straining.

The pain - the pain medication given by my doctor was a blessing. i did not really experience pain the whole time i was in the hospital and the following week when i went to work. bleeding was gone in about 3 days. i walk weird because i've been trying to take it easy on my wound. also, there is discomfort when i walk still, especially after bowel movement.

Speaking of BM, Jan. 24 i did a huge BM and i think i strained it a bit. dull pain all throughout the day. i'm hoping and praying that the incident does not pose any problems in the long run and will not hamper my recovery in any way. i googled the best way to do a BM and i see that you need to squat to avoid straining. i did so today and it was a success. however, the dull pain is still there. i really hope that this is just the post-op wound and nothing more.

currently out of pain meds and antibiotics. all i have left are hemorid and sitz bath. hoping that i really go back to normal really soon. still on soft foods and fibrous diet. gave up coffee altogether because i read that it can lead to hard stools.

all the best for us all.
