Omg, I'm so glad I found this site! I'm 55 and had a complete hysterectomy 2 years ago. My obgyn didn't put me on HRT because I had already gone thru the menopause and she told I didn't need it. I struggled thru menopause for 12 years with every symptom and then some, developed severe anxiety, high blood pressure, and just wanted to die. After my hysterectomy, I never felt better....that is until these last couple of months. Now I'm back to the hot flashes, anxiety, heart beating like crazy, feeling like I'm going out of my mind. I thought I was the only one since I'm always told that it couldn't happen since I had a hysterectomy and am past menopause. Well, now I know different. What is wrong with doctors? Do they not put enough research into this? Is it because elderly gals aren't worth their time and effort? I don't know, but it's frustrating and I'm glad (not for you all!) that I'm not the only one going thru this.

I had my ovaries removed four and a half years ago at 39, the hysterectomy was 2 years before that. I refused HRT, I wanted to see how it went (and I had never been good on hormones). I felt a bit warmer within 24 hours of surgery, and continued to have what I called 'mild warmings for many months. I used to say to anyone that would listen - apart from the flashes, not sleeping through the night, massive weight gain, joint aches etc, I felt 100% better than I ever had with ovaries. Well, almost imperceptibly, these mild symptoms faded. I was like, wow, I pretty much had an easy ride there! I'd read so many stories of a surgical menopause being even tougher than a natural one.
Well, the last few months have seen me going downhill :-( I'm getting more migraines, more and more vertigo episodes, palpitations, severe anxiety, I'm soooo tired, upset tummy, food intolerances and now, I'm too hot - too cold - too hot - too cold - sweating - freezing :-/
The spinning/vertigo is the most debilitating, it was assumed to be migraine associated vertigo initially as it came every 4 weeks when I still had ovaries! It may well still be that, the worst thing is how frequent is has become - along with headaches, face aches, eye aches (all migraine things, I guess?).
It would be interesting to know how many of the ladies that have posted had their ovaries removed at hysterectomy? It makes sense for menopause to occur later if the ovaries are kept, as they will cease to function eventually just like a lady who hasn't had a hyster. I'm confused because my ovaries were removed four and half years ago, and that should have resulted in an instant menopause - where else were the hormones going to come from? - so what the hell is this that is going on with me??? I've been reading all sorts of stuff the last couple of days, and I'm getting the idea that menopause isn't only controlled by our ovaries. It seems that even with surgical removal of all the relevant bits, if it wasn't our time to go into meno, then some other body organ will make up the shortfall until we reach our 'pre-determined' time to go into meno - and THAT is where we all seem to gotten to.
Four years ago I argued persistently with my consultant, gp and various nurses about oestrogen replacement - I was adamant that I didn't want it, even though they all said I 'must'. I have been feeling so poorly that I have REQUESTED it now.
I sincerely hope that all these stories, and the many tens of thousands of others that must be out there, get heard, and that someone decides more research is needed! I also hope and pray that relief comes soon for us all.
