I'm sure this is a common question, but how can I prevent this pain in my shoulders I get after running. The answer I always used to get was get good running shoes. So I went to a place to get just the right shoes for me. Then I was told to loosen up my arms, so I did, and there at a 90 degree angle (at the elbow) at the most. Still, the pain is there. Before I could tolerate it but today when I woke up it was much worse. And it's odd because today it's only on the right side. It only really hurts today when I tilt my head towards my right shoulder.
Is this just normal muscle pain for begginers or is it something I should be worried about? Cause I can fight through it I just don't want to do perminent damage. Thanks.

My shoulders hurt from bouncing while running. To prevent this, it usually helps to stretch your arms and back before you run, not just your legs. I find the best things are rotating shrugs and rotating your arms all the way around in both directions. My shoulders hurt every now and then even with stretching, so my methods aren't foolproof.

Ok thanks, I do a little stretching before I run and quite a bit after. I'll focus more on shoulder stretching from now on, because all I really do for shoulders is neck rotations.

Before I got any cross-training into my routine, I had a stint where my hand would fall asleep on occasion during a run. It'd start at the pinkie and work it's way from there depending on the length of the run. I also remember a shoulder stiffness from time to time. Then one winter I started including miles on the indoor rower and boom, all those arm and shoulder tingles disappeared.

I agree with stretching before and after the run. I had a lot of problems with my shoulders when I first starting running. The stretching helps!

Ok thanks a lot for all the help. Too bad I just gave away my rower :( . I've got a personal gym in my basement...I'll do some shoulder exersizes and stuff.
Another question...is it a good thing to work the upper body as well? My future goal is to seriously compete in marathons and I'm afraid of adding weight to my upper body I might not need. I'm like 125 pounds as it is lol. Will doing upper body training help my running? Thanks!
