There was a site a while back that showcased a guy that had developed a locking pet door based on the profile of your pet's head. If the profile/shadow had anything extra hanging out of it's mouth, the door wouldn't unlock.

That's neat. Unfortunately I don't think there are any suitable models for hamsters, salamanders (and other amphibians), birds, fish, or stick-bugs.
