I recently got treated for chlamydia with four pills of azithromycin. After I took it, diarrhea started and I thought it was normal because I read online diarrhea is a common side effect. But tomorrow it will be a week since I took it, should it still last this long? And today it started burning a bit, is this normal? I just don't wanna go back to the doctor, I was hoping this one dose would have fixed things. Do you think I should wait a few days or is there anything I can take to stop the diarrhea?

Hi,

Diarrhea is a side effect for azithromycin. About 4-12% adult will experience it as a side effect according to clinical pharmacology. Azithromycin has a half-life of 68 hours meaning it will be in your system for 68 hours from the day you took it. Normal dose would be 1000 grams which is supposed to be just 2 tablets to treat chlamydia. If you are having that side effect, call your doctor's office, you don't have to speak with the doctor you can speak with a nurse if you don't want another visit + insurance. It is an antibiotic and would change your normal flora in the gut that causes the diarrhea. If it hurts and burning then call the doctor OR call a pharmacy and speak with a pharmacist for an advise they will help you. I hope this helps.

Normal dose is 1 gram, NOT 1000! I know that's probably just a typo and no fault of the poster's, I just want to make sure no one would take 1000 grams of azithromycin, as that would probably definitely kill you.

I took a 5 day course for a Sinus Infection three months ago. It did a great job on the Sinus Infection but has left me with horrific and constant Diarrhea. I have not been able to work, been to multiple Doctors and Specialists, had more tests than I can count, and nothing helps it. I cannot be more than a few minutes away from a bathroom. I don't know what else to do.

Thanks For advice

That is incorrect some are diagnosed with 4 tabs to take at once which equals out to be 2000mg each tab at 500..it all depends on what is being treated.

Just a quick correction, 2000 mg = 2 grams. The previous poster was right. A dose of 1000 grams would be lethal.

It sounds like you may have Clostridium Difficil. My son had it and it is from taking antibiotics. It can be treated and can be passed from person to person by those using the same bathroom and through unclean hands.

I took two Ivs in the hospital, each 500 ml. and one 500ml pill after I got out. I was suppose to take two more pills but have stopped because I am having diarrhea. Stay tuned because that is the signal for c diff and you do not want that but 1500ml of this antibiotic will not kill you. Your scarring people.

No it, wouldn't kill you.. 2 500mg pills or 4 250mg are the dosing regimen

Sounds like you contracted cdiff.

I have taken 3 tabs of 500mg per tablet (1500mg in total) at 15:30 by 17:30 I am on the toilet for the 4th time! Maybe I should have only taken 2 tabs?? but as there was 3 in the pack I just took them all...hopefully I’ll be okay soon...or maybe I should have took them 1 a day for 3 days, just hope I don’t do any damage to myself

500mg is one day dosage to be taken for 3 days (3 day course).
Why would you take them all at once? Please be careful while taking these powerful drugs and consult a physician friend at least before taking any drug. I know one can become desperate in times of illness but what you did was definitely dangerous. Hope you are well now.
Please take care and exercise caution next time on-wards.
