So I'm an 18 and a half year old female in college. For years I have occasionally had episodes where something small sets off a mood that is extreme. Like the time my brother jumped out and scared me and I was so angry that I lost control and pushed him across the room.
Today, I bumped my elbow on the elevator door, and yelled out some profanity, followed by my slamming things around a bit and throwing my laundry down. It didn't even hurt that bad!
And then the mood goes away just as quickly. Something makes me laugh and I forget all about it. Sometimes the mood is depression instead of anger, and I become incapable of making myself stop crying.
It kind of scares me that I have these mood swings - and they aren't related to PMS, my period is too far away for that.
Can anyone help me?

generally with bipolar disorder the mood swings last a long time, with mania requiring many symptoms (including euphoria, intense energy and restlessness, delusions, etc) and having no sleep and this usually lasts about a week or more and severe depression which lasts a few weeks to a few months. there is a type of mood called dysphoric mania or a mixed episode where you have a combination of mania and depression symptoms at the same time (and trust me this i think it worse than depression)
those mood swings you are having could be related to borderline personality disorder as they seem similar to people i have met in hospital with the disorder...
good luck figuring out what is going on, my advice would be to book is with a psychiatrist and tell him/her about your symptoms. they are able to really effectively work out whats going on and give you meds to help cope, but hopefully the side effets of the meds aren't worse than the actual mood swings!
