Be careful what you use. Use soft things. Soft things will bend to the shape of the rectum. Use lots of lubrication. Lots and lots of lubrication. KY or Vaseline. Works well. Usually fingers do not hurt with disposable gloves. Some things are too large and don't bend like carrots. They go in straight and your large intestine is not straight and has many bends. If you put straight things in it is possible to tear the lining. Try to find things that are flexible.
