The day your period starts is day 1 of your cycle.
You will normally ovulate between day 11 and 16 of your cycle. Sperm can survive up to about 5 days. The egg for about 2.
So start trying about a week after your period starts. Take a break the week before your period is due.
There are ovulation test kits available that can determine when you ovulate.
