Ever since I started having periods I've been VERY irregular. I've never had more then 2 to 4 periods a year. When I finally got the nerve to ask my doctor about it she said it was because I am over weight. Yes, I am overweight but I haven't always been, but I've ALWAYS been irregular. She had me take Provera to regulate it. I had my period shortly after that, but its been about 6 months and I have not gotten another one. I do have other systems that make me believe that I might have a hormonal imbalance (gaining weight, fuzzy thinking, low sex drive, etc...) but I'm only 26. Is it possible at this age to have a hormonal imbalance? I've talked to many woman but no one seems to know what might be wrong with me. I feel like an emotional wreck and it's affecting my marriage. Has anyone else been through this? Does anyone have advise? Thank you.
I am 25 and all of my life I have hardly had a period. I started when I was about 14 or 15 and I had a 2 day period then. I didn't have another until I was a senior in high school. My next one came when I had to use the morning after pill my freshman year in college when my boyfriend's condom broke. I got on bc when I was a sophomore in college and that made them regular again (although I gained A LOT of weight; 30 pounds in about a month on Ortho Tri Cyclen) I have just stopped taking the pill ( I went through about 5 over that time span to find the perfect one) because I was experiencing depression, moodiness and a nearly non-existant sex drive. Since I have been off of the pill, I have been a totally different person. I feel like I am me again. But, of course, I have not had my period. I know that I am not pregnant because we always use condoms (and yes, we use them perfectly). I am going back to the gyn at the beginning of August to have my estrogen and progesterone levels checked to see if they are normal. She already tested for prolactin and something else while I was taking the pill, and those were normal. She said that 3 months is the max it should take to have regular periods after coming off of the pill. My mother was irregular like me so I always dismissed it, but now I see that it is probably time to go get those blood tests for those hormone levels. I feel totally normal concerning everything else, but just no monthly visitor...

I am also 26. I have rarely had periods. I started when I was 10. I have issues with pain. I am a wimp. It used to make me double over in P.E. That is all I remember about my periods when I was young. So I guess it was the same then as now because I am pitiful handling pain I would have remembered if I had more than this.
The MD I went to when I was 15 and another when I was 17 put me on the pill. But since my memory/ thinking gets fussy so, I couldn't remember to take them all the time. I got someone to give them to me everyday and that worked for a while and it regulated me for a month. I have also since tried the patch and the ring, but no luck. The ring might have worked, but I think I am too I am too sensitive to foreign stuff.
It has been a year since I had a period. I started 2 Saturdays ago. It is not an even flow & is mostly tissue this time. I am in pain and with no insurance I don't have anything to do about it right now.
I guess I should have said it first. But I won’t to say I appreciate the other women that had posted this. That we are all about the same age is kind of scary. But I felt like I am the only one. No one I know of understands what I am talking about, but now I am not alone.
THANK YOU!!!

don't let them put you on birth control to regulate your periods - its a very out of date way of regulation and as many of you experienced it doesn't work and causes so many other issues - my best friend who is the same age as me also had an irregular period - she skipped a period for almost three years and finally had another one and then skipped several months - they even put her on birth control the first time she went to an obgyn when she was younger - she just recently went back to an obgyn and the obgyn said that it was probably because her body was producing too much testosterone - basically her brain was telling her she was a guy - it was very hard for her to lose weight and even when she excercised she always bulked up and eventually stopped excercising for that reason. He put her on a form of medication which forbids you to have sugars - i forget the name but its a form of anti-diabetic drug and you're supposed to take it three times a day - hope this helped.

I am 20 years old. and for my age and height I am considered to be overweight... My periods have been irregular since i started having them. I recently looked on the internet to find out why they were irregular. hoping to find a answer i came across POLYCYSTIC OVARIAN SYNDROME (pcos). It is a health problem that can affect a woman's menstrual cycle, ability to have children, hormones, heart, blood vessels, and appearance. Most signs or symptoms consist of infrequent menstrual periods, no menstrual periods, and/or irregular bleeding infertility (not able to get pregnant) because of not ovulating, increased hair growth on the face, chest, stomach, back, thumbs, or toes, weight gain or obesity, pelvic pain, anxiety or depression due to appearance and/or infertility. Those are just some. My suggestion is to visit your gyn doctor and also do some research on PCOS to see if you are having similar symptoms. good luck!

I am 21 yrs old and get my period 3-4 times a year. When I first started when I was 14 I had my first one for a month, then I was off it for a moth, then on it for a month. My doctor didn't like that so he put me on birth control for 6 months. After I stopped. Because when I was 14 I wasnt sexually active and saw no use of it. thats when my periods stopped almost completely. After 3-4 months of not having a period, my doctor wasn't happy, but wasn't really scared. he said he'd rather me be off it than on it. We started realizing a cycle, every 3-4 months I'd get it. He let me know that I was irregular, but regular in my own way because we could predict when I would be on it. I was a freshmen in highschool when all the tests started. We found out that I had a hormone imbalance, I have more testosterone than I should and less estrogen than I should. my arm was like permanately bruised from all the needles that were stcl in me from getting blood work after blood work. they told me that I could be infertile or that it would be hard for me to produce children. during the months I was off my period and when I was on it, I would experience this pain, not normal cramp pain, but killer pain near my ovaries. I couldn't move or anything. I was put on vicodin and other medicines to help me get through the days and nights. My doctor began to think that I have endomitriosis because it runs in my family. I got many ultrasounds and other treatments. When he said the next step to truly see that I had it was surgery I backed down. It was at the end of my senior year and I couldn't miss 1-2 weeks of school. the pain kept on. but once I turned about 19 the pain lowered from 12 to a 6. I told myself I could handle that and didn't want to be a pin cushion anymore as well as an experiment. so I kept on 4 periods a year. this was the best part of it all. I just recently started my period for the year and it lasted 2 weeks. this is not normal for me and once again two weeks after I stopped I got it again. I went to the doctors, not my old one, and they couldnt do much than to give me medicine because now the pain is back to a 12. I am now starting the process over and going to see a specialist and see if I have endomitriosis.

Hi I am 19 years old and been with my boyfriend for over a year. I have not started my period in probably about a year now.I've always been irregular since I started my period. My doctor just said that it was a teen phase, but I'm 19 now.  I gained a couple of pounds, a year ago I was wearing a size 3 in jeans and now I wear a size 9! I was very petite. Every now and then I cramp as if I'm going to start but I dont. I'm not on birth control and I'm not quite sexually active. I have no clue what's wrong with me.............

I am 25 years old... I had my first period when i was ten and then I didn't have one again until I was 14. For the most part I have one period a year sometimes I go two years without having one except the time span when my doctor was trying me on several different birth controls then my period wouldn't go off and she would have to give me medicine to stop it called megesterol. When I do get my period i lasts almost a month and it is very painful. I don't know what is wrong with me or if i will ever be able to have children. Me and my boyfriend have been together 9 years and have never had any pregnancy scares. we haven't used condoms for about two years now and we haven't had any luck getting pregnant. My doctor thought I had PCOS or fibroids but when I was tested neither showed up! :(

I am currently 36 when i was 12 i had my first period and was 8-9 months before i had another. I have always been irregular and just when i though it was going to regulate it did something diferent for one year about 6-8 months straight i came on each month then nothing for about 6 months. Now i am having bleeding everyday since mid dec. bleeding and clots. Now since mid feb i have been flowing continuously. My ob wants to give me a D&C Heterolgy to find out ehat is the problem. You are not along. Found out for the last year my blood count has been a little low and blood pressure a little low. I have experience cramps that have been so bad that i have passed out when walking. So, i know how it feels. It is difficult fo rme to get pregnant and on top i have had one miscarriage alreay at 23. So when u find out the best thing let me know. Oh yeah been put on hormone pills a time are too as well work once and that is it to start my period which came on for a day and didnt come back on and reseasonly to stop it but just lighten it up a bit. . lynette36

I'm a 20 and I had my first period on my 13th birthday. I think they were regular for alittle while but then they got very irregular. My mom told me she's had irregular periods to because my cysts on her overies. I havn't had a period in awhile (I don't remember how long) and it does kind of bother me. I'm thinking of going to see a doctor about as last time I had my physical I was 18 and they said I was fine and healthy I just had a bit high testosterone and they put me on birth control. I'm also over weight but I have been since I was around 10 years old. I do have a high sex drive and I always have. So I have no clue whats wrong with me. I don't use a condom but I've only had sex with the same guy for the last 3 years. I don't look or feel pregnant and I'm possitive it's been over a year since my last period or 8 months at least.

I'm 16 & I'm 5'7 & about 147 pounds. I got my first period on the last day of 6th grade. I don't know how old I was then? I have always been extremely active. Ever since i got my period i have been irregular. A few months would go by & i would never get it. I have gained a bit of weight but I would not consider myself to be overweight. Im also not sexually active. I hope this doesn't affect my ability to have children when I'm older & other health issues
