I was in a cast for 5 weeks with Jones Fracture, non weight bearing. It is healing slowly and nondisplaced. Today I was put in air cam boot non weight bearing. for another 4 weeks and then recheck. My issue is the boot feels so restrictive and tight, Is this normal? I can only take it off to bathe and change sock.  I didnt want another cast now wish maybe I had gone that route even tho I hated it. If healing looks better at the 9 week mark then what will the doctor most likely do?

Thank You

Hi.

It's normal for a medical boot, including an air cam boot, to feel restrictive and snug. These boots are designed to provide stability and support to the injured area, which is crucial for proper healing. However, if you feel that the boot is excessively tight or causing discomfort or pain, it's important to contact your doctor or orthopedic specialist. They can assess the fit of the boot and make any necessary adjustments to ensure it's both supportive and comfortable.

Jones fractures can be challenging to heal because they are located in a region of the foot with limited blood supply. The non-displaced nature of your fracture is a positive factor for healing. Typically, the healing process for such fractures takes time, and non-weight-bearing status is often recommended to prevent stress on the healing bone

At the 9-week mark, your doctor will likely perform another evaluation to assess the status of the fracture. Depending on how well it's healing, they may recommend various courses of action:

  • If the fracture has healed satisfactorily, they may allow you to begin weight-bearing gradually and discontinue the use of the boot.
  • If there is still evidence of incomplete healing or concerns about stability, they may extend the non-weight-bearing period or recommend further treatment, such as physical therapy.
  • In some cases, if healing is not progressing as expected, surgical intervention may be considered.

Hope you are better now.
