Vodka made with potatoes will kill you most likely at level 5 - or make you super irrational black out sick drunk... i found out the hard way and mine is just an intolerance. It has a very negative effect. If you are not allergic to wheat - you can do wheat vodkas (popkov/ grey goose). Hope that helps! :)

I recently became allergic to potatoes. Although I do not have celiac disease I am allergic to soy, wheat, rice and corn as well as tomatoes, strawberries, oranges, shrimp. I will try to see if can eat sweet potatoes. It's really hard to found foods that I can eat with out a allergic reaction.

Hey there, just saw your post and wanted to reply. Alcohol doesn't actually kill, or denature, proteins. So alcohol would have no effect on potato protein in vodka made from potatoes (the majority of vodka these days is made from wheat, if that helps). What you really want to ask is: how much of the original potato protein is removed from potato based vodka by the distillation process?

I asked that very question during a Hangar One vodka distillery tour in Alameda, CA and was told that the distillation process would remove any of the base grain or potato protein from the spirit, so it should be safe for those sensitive to potato or wheat proteins.

I then asked my allergist, who is a bit of a bigshot in the San Francisco Bay Area (he delivered the keynote speech at an international allergy conference in Geneva, Switzerland not too long ago). He agreed that the distillation process should remove any proteins along with impurities in the finished product, so no distilled spirit should trigger an allergic reaction.

That said, he did mention it wasn't a fool proof process and tiny quantities of the protein could occasionally be present. If someone were *severely* sensitive to it, they might react to the very tiny amounts.

I drink Gray Goose vodka, which is made from wheat and tend to have a minor reaction every time. Why? Because all alcoholic beverages contain histamine to some degree, wine more than spirits, and darker spirits have more than lighter (vodka and gin are the most non-allergenic). Since I am *very* reactive to histamine on allergy tests, it doesn't matter what alcohol I drink, my asthma will flare. That said, it flares least to gin and vodka, and, since I am allergic to potatoes (and all other members of the nightshade family) I ensure my vodka of choice is wheat derived, to mimimize any allergic/asthma flares.

Bottom line, I guess you'll just have to try various beverages (small quantities!) through trial and error to determine which are more friendly to your system and which are less.

If you are extremely allergic, may I recommend you do this under a doctor's supervision? Because if you have a serious reaction, you'll want medical personnel on hand to administer epinephrine and any other necessary life saving techniques.

I've come close to needing epinephrine and an oxygen line a few times myself, and I can tell you it's no fun. Take care, and I wish you luck and most importantly good health. :-)

My six year old is allergic to sweet potatoes. She actually went into anaphylaxis from eating them. But regular white potatoes she’s fine with.
