Why? Why am I putting myself through this crappola. 20+ hours a week and that does not include the lifting and stretching and massages. The hours are long, the recovery is forever.

My muscles are tired and sore all the time. I cannot eat enough food and yet continue to lose weight. I spend more time washing gym clothes than I do real clothes. My hands and feet are permanently pruned and I buy bathing suits by the dozen.

I see my wife briefly as I sit at the dinner table and eat. My dogs growl at my as I walk past thinking I'm a stranger. I have a strap rub on my shoulder that is tatooed on from constantly carrying a gym bag where ever I go.

The customer service people at Performance Bike know my credit card number by heart. I have a standing order to automatically ship me tires and tube every other month. The shop guy at my LBS put my name on a seat in the shop because I'm there so often.

My cell phone has made an indent on my hip where I carry it on my long rides that will not come out. I have helmet head without wearing my helmet. i have a stupid tan across my fingers from my gloves. My legs from the mid thigh to the ankle are dark brown, the rest is white.

My bike calls me on the phone if I don't ride her daily. (Jealous I guess.)

I feel your pain brother (except for the swimming part). It's a lot better than some of the other things I used to do though.

If I wasn't workig, I'd be training. I do use my stretch cords and my "Stick" at work to ease my time.
I sometimes wonder if it is all worth it. I remember last year when I was about 2 months out of IMFL, I used to think about injuries and being able to have an excuse to stop all the nonsence. Now I'm training again.

ooooooh, good response. Marathon262. a lot of us feel your dilemma, and often think to ourselves your very concerns. but yet we do it time and time again. not saying it's right, not saying it's wrong. i'm just saying it is. if you find out why please let us all know. now go change your tire, in your bathing suit with your helmet, gym bag and phone on so we recognize you. maybe a rest day in order??

I feel your pain. But think, you won't be able to do this for the rest of your life. So enjoy it for now. I bet if you weren't doing the Ironman this year you'd be saying "I wish I was doing the Ironman and all that training...I miss the hours and the pushing of my body..."

I can't even fathom the guilt I would feel! A rest day, when I know my competition is out there training? No way. The only way to WIN is to train longer and smarter then my competition. I often wonder while I'm out there if that other guy is feeling the same way I do. I think about being passed with 100yds left and missing my slot. 140.5 miles done and lose with .1 left. I'd die. BTW, I took a day off last year sometime. I'm not ready for another day. I'm just joking. Last week was easy week and I did get some rest. Sheldon

Sheldon I hope you are just venting??!! it should be fun and funfilling!!! of course putting in the hours of training, getting up early, missing out on other things, can be a drag but overall in the big scheme it should be fun and worthwhile. IMO rest days are vital for the body and part of an effective training program, as we get older and we all are, I find that one well place rest day a week aids in a great and productive training cycle. Right now taper time is tough 11 days and counting to IMLP. But all those hours of training I put in over the past months should be paying off in a less than 2 weeks. Enjoy it all, life is too short not to.
