Good day. I never had any procedures in my life. But a month ago my doctor told me that I need to have angiogram. I accepted it because he told me that this is very important to do. But I never asked him why I needed to do this at first place. Now, almost a week after angiogram, I am having a really weird pain. Some people who have experience with it told me that this is normal thing, but some of them told me that this is not that common.

I was wondering what you think. Is it normal to feel pain after angiogram?

Hey there.

For a person who has never had an angiogram the thought of making this hole in the groin, putting a tube through it into an artery and then threading that tube all the way up the heart can be frightening and in your mind you can feel that pain. It is a fact that this is terrifying but I think that generally you really don’t need to be worried because this can help you discover what bothers you.

Yes, it is more likely that you are going to feel pain after angiogram. My grandmother had pain three months after angiogram.

Hey you two,

I believe that it is common to feel pain after angiogram. I've been working in a hospital for a few months and I remember people coming for the angiogram procedure. Some patients would return even after four months complaining about the pain that they still felt.

I asked the doctor once if it was normal, and he told me that it was. Not everyone reacts the same to angiogram, some people feel the pain for a period of time afterwards, and some don't. I don't think that you have anything to worry about, but if you want to be sure, you can go ahead and visit your doctor.

Hello there guys. Thank you so much for answering me this fast. There is a reason why they told me that this website is amazing and now I can see why.
The reason why I asked you this is because I do know several people who never had any kind of pain and now I know a couple of them who had. That is why I am worried about this. The pain that I feel is really weird and trust me I think that I can’t explain to you. Also, I have shortness of breath sometimes and I don’t know is this because I am dealing with arrhythmia or not.

Hey there.

Yes, you can definitely get a feeling of having pain or some discomfort. My neighbor Lilly had two angiograms and I can remember that she was in a lot of pain from this. She was in bigger pain because local anesthesia didn’t work so well. When she had her another angiogram I remember that doctor cut into her left groin and she was in so big pain after this.

Well, because of this she was in really big pain a few weeks after angiogram. I know, because I was taking care of her after this.

But generally, her recovery process was pretty fast and fine.

Hey everyone,

Don't scare him (or her) like that, Aurora. It is not normal for your friend to have felt a strong pain.

The pain that people usually complain about is not strong at all, it is weak and it is not normal, they describe it as a weird pain, like something they have never felt before, and can't really describe it any closer than that.

It is very likely that you won't feel any pain at all, Guest. There is a chance however, that you will feel this sort of pain that other people felt after the procedure. But don't worry about it, it's not dangerous or anything, neither is it strong.

No, no, no. It can happen but it is not normal. When the pain IS NORMAL? Never, I believe. I think that you guys should not tell this member that felling pain after angiogram is normal.

What do you do when you feel pain? Do you just sit and do nothing? I don’t think so.

So, if you are feeling pain after angiogram than you should consult someone who is an expert, explain the pain and I am sure that you are going to find the solution very quick.

Good luck in your recovery process.I hope that everything is going to be ok.

I was in the ER for back pain that turned out to be heart related as I had a heart attack while they were getting ready to do an ECG. It was after midnight and they had to call in the cath team. They took me down to the cath lab about 3am and did the procedure. I never felt anything but I could tell they were touching me down near where my right leg bends at the hip on the inside. The only thing I felt was when they released the dye it felt warm in my chest, very warm. I was worried it might become too warm for my comfort but it didn't. I felt nothing else from that procedure. I don't know how big the hole was where they inserted the catheter but it must have been very small as I cannot find any scar and did not feel them do anything to close it. I do not recall there being so much as a band aid on me. The next day the girl came in to give me a full body shave and there was nothing there to obstruct her razor work.

If you are feeling pain you should let your doctor or hospital know.

Hey everyone,

I'm glad to hear that the procedure went so well when you had it, njoynlife.

Guest who posted the question didn't say anything about feeling pain during the procedure, so I'm guessing that he or she didn't feel any.

Since he or she was complaining about the pain that happened about a week after angiogram, I am interested to know if you felt any pain a few months after the procedure was done, njoynlife. I know that some people complain about a weird pain they had even after 4 months have passed since the procedure was done. It appears that this isn't dangerous, it just happens.

Since I had bypass surgery two days after the cath insertion I don't know how I could tell if anything I felt later was from the cath or not. I do know the hospital report said I was allergic to the cath dye. Any pain I felt afterward I blamed on the fact they ran a skil saw up my chest and spread it open.

Hey everyone,

That sounds nasty, njoynlife. I'm glad that everything turned out to be okay.

As far as I know, angiogram is a completely painless procedure and I've actually never heard of people complaining about the pain they felt after the procedure was done. You guys are probably right about what you wrote, I'm just saying that I didn't hear about those kinds of cases.

My grandfather had angiogram done when I was still little. When he came back home, he used to scare me and my brothers with the stories about it, how they cut him and put the catheter inside him. It was so scary.

I don't know, I was asleep for the bypass and they didn't gave me a video to take home for my entertainment. I didn't ask for one either. I think they may have made a small incision to do the cath years ago. Everything they do seems to get easier and better as time goes on. I know they now do many bypass operations without opening you up like they did to me.

Why do I have a cold or wet sensation in the angiogram seal area in the groin? Sometimes I feel sharp pain. I sleep on my sides and back and the sharp pain occurs when I wake up.

Hi. I was wondering how you are feeling now being a year later. I have a similar experience and am worried about it. My procedure was back in March 4th 2022. And before that day all I had was the chest pain/angina. Now I have all kinds of stuff going on. My legs cramp almost every night. I get light headed nearly every time I stand up quick (used to happen occasionally before but now it's every time..!!) But the worst is getting this strange sensation in the center of my chest-sternum area; it sort of radiates out and there's this strange pressure but it doesn't hurt-but it makes me feel weird and my brain, almost like anxiety; it's hard to explain. I remember telling the nurse as soon as it was done if I was supposed to feel pressure in my chest-she said no-but to tell them if it gets worse. Well, it didn't but it's still been kickin' around since.

In my situations, I refused a stent. I had a 70 to 80 % blockage (right side) and I refused it because I had already started a plant based diet and still am on one. I don't get the angina at all that much but now I get those other things. I don't trust the doctors anymore. The cardiologist I never worked with before and he acted upset when I told him I didn't want the stent. There's more but Ill just leave it at that. I hope you're doing better and will pray for you.

My wife had her femoral angiogram soon to be 5 years ago. Almost every night she is in tears crying so hard because of the pain since the angiogram. I was wondering if other people have had tremendous pain in the area where the needle was inserted into her femoral artery. We have been jerked around by several different doctors with no pain relief at all. We have been told our only recourse is legal. if anyone has had continued pain please let us know.
