I'm almost 29 and got my first yeast infection last week. At least, I believe it was a yeast infection. I had thick, white, clumpy, odorless discharge and burning. I bought the 7 day version of Monistat because I consulted my sister and she told me the 3 day one hurts very badly. I started it Friday night, and when I went to insert it Monday night, I used a mirror to help and noticed my vagina and the area around my urethra were extremely swollen and pearly looking. The opening was completely swollen shut and it was difficult to see my urethra. I decided it was a temporary reaction to the medicine, so I inserted it Monday night and also Tuesday night. Wednesday I started to have my doubts so I took a picture of my genitals and asked my mom if she had ever had that kind of reaction. She said it looked bad and she thought I should go to the doctor. I'm going to call in the morning and see if have openings (no pun intended). If they don't, I'll go to an urgent care clinic in the evening. It's possible I could have a bacterial infection, but I doubt it because there is no odor. I really think this is a reaction to the medicine. I'll post updates once I find out more. As for pain, I have some burning and also abdominal cramps, but it isn't too bad. My main concern is how horribly deformed my vagina looks, and I really hope my uterus, ovaries, or fallopian tubes are not also deformed. I don't think significant quantities of the medicine can make it past the uterus, so hopefully I will be OK. I'll post an update after I see the doctor.

Update to my post 6/17: I got into the doctor Friday 6/19. She saw my picture from Wednesday and then examined me, and concluded that I had a reaction to the medicine. She also swabbed me for yeast. I should get the results Monday. She said that from now on, if I have the symptoms of a yeast infection, I should call her office and they will send a prescription for Diflucan to my pharmacy. However, since this is my first yeast infection, hopefully I won't get them very often. The week prior I had used scented tampons at work because I had run out of my own unscented ones, so I think that contributed. That was also my first time using a scented tampon. As for my irritation, the swelling has gone done mostly, though I have some redness now and also some occasional burning and itching. The burning and itching comes in waves, and then goes away.

Update:

I ended up going to my regular doctor three times. Each time she said I had inflammation and discharge, but it came back negative for BV, yeast, and trich. Her opinion was that I was having a prolonged inflammatory response (like a dermatitis) to the monistat. She referred me to a gynecologist two weeks ago. Again, no signs of infection; just inflammation. She prescribed Clobetosol (steroid) cream. The cream started to increase my pain after about a week. I went back for a follow-up and...now I have a yeast infection. -_- She could see it just by looking and also with the microscope. She prescribed 3 pills of Diflucan to take every other day. She said to stop the steriod cream and only wash with water for a week. I really hope this helps. I've been in pain for two months. The other things I've done on my own to try to help myself include switching to a pH-balanced, unscented feminine wash, and taking Rephresh pro-B, a probiotic with two bacteria strains that have been shown to improve vaginal health. However, they don't even want me to use that wash now, until my tissues are less inflamed. She said I don't have tears in the tissue yet but I'm close.

I agree, going trough this horrible experience:( i cried every time I urinated. I suspected an allergic reaction but when I say a picture of herpes and thought the blisters looked similar I bawled! Slowly I'm healing.

You could try an urgent care clinic. Those are less expensive than ERs. Or just try using an unscented douche, like Summer's Eve vinegar douche, to wash some of it out. I'm not sure if a douche is recommended, or if there's the potential to spread the medicine around more, or push it up into the cervix. Thankfully, the Summer's Eve douche bottles are designed so the solution comes out the sides of the nozzle and trickles down, and thus is not forced way up inside, so maybe with that brand at least it's not a risk.

Update (11/3): I made a full recovery after taking the Diflucan. It was relief after being in pain for two months. Now I can say that I've been pain-free for more than two months :-). I'm still taking the probiotic, wearing white cotton underwear, and using a pH balanced, unscented wash. If I ever get a yeast infection again, I'm just going on Diflucan, which is a pill taken orally. I don't ever want to use a topical treatment in or around my vagina again.

Omg! I'm. So happy I found this site! I used monistat 1 and almost died! Could barely walk, sores, swelling and a fever. I had to call out of work, I was worried I had contracted herpes somehow. Its been a week and I'm still in pain and not back to normal. I feel like time is not going to help! I called my gyno and another week before I can get it in.. Its like if I make it till then. Feel better!!
