Is using adderall the same as using meth?

My daughter 28 was in rehab for a year I had her son for meth. it was bad. Now she is overtaking adderall and her is incoherent and paranoid as heck. I do not know if she is back on meth, but her brother insists she is overloading the adderall. I fear for her small child. And she is in nursing school. (she should not be around drugs ,period)

actually, most if not all people taking drugs adhd meds need them for focus and concentration. I don't mean to resurrect this thread but the guy at the top posted and interesting question about his dosage of vyvanse.vyvanse (mg)= 3.3333* Adderall (mg). I have had both and I think the Adderall makes me very irritable. So much so it causes depression, and that was at 10 mg (EX.I bought a BB gun because a chipmunk was chirping too loud). In college a friend gave me his vyvanse which were 70 (mg), Which I thought was a very high does thinking vyvanse and Adderall were 1:1 (mg). So I cut his pills in half, but my shrink gave me 20 mg and it did not have any affect so I double the dose and that's when i found that ratio so I was actually taking the correct prescription to begin with.

Adderall's max dosage goes up to 30 (mg) so if that's taken twice a day that would be 200 (mg) of Vyvanse. Vyvanse's bioavailability is 28% while Adderall's is around 75%. This is because Vyvanse's absorption stream is through the liver (If you notice Adderall kicks in faster and stronger than Vyvanse that's why).

So with that answered I would like to pose the thread title question:What's the equivalent dose of Adderall to street meth? Adderall or generically, amphetamine salts combo contain the following.1/4 dextroamphetamine saccharate1/4 dextroamphetamine sulfate, USP1/4 (racemic) amphetamine aspartate monohydrate1/4 (racemic) amphetamine sulfate, USP

I cannot answer for sure because I'm not a chemist, but It does not seem to have an equivalents because both D and I amphetamines listed do not break down or if they do it would be to straight amphetamine, which differs from methamphetamine. That is unless methamphetamine also breaks down to straight amphetamine.

So i'm on the fence. If someone knows the answer please post it and correct me if i'm wrong on anything I said. As a side note methamphetamine and Adderall both have a bioavailability of 99% renally (why someone would what to shove meth of their butt is beyond me).

By the way it does not work with Vyvanse because it must go through the liver, even if it is injected (Meaning it has the same up-take no matter what hole it is stuck in). An injection may make the bioavailability some what more efficient because it skips the gastrointestinal track, but it still has to go through the liver to properly break down.

Technically if methamphetamine, Adderall and Vyvanse break down to pure amphetamine by the time it's in the brain then it solely depends on how the drug enters the body for a per milligram equivalence (orally, smoke,injected or whatever other creative ways children figure out).This is because the bioavailability differs for each method. Also remember I-Amphetamine's are designed specifically in Adderall to slow uptake of D-Amphetamine's so it creates a dosage curve and not a spike. Vyvanse uses an attached pro-drug and the liver to create the same curve (Remember the idea of medications is not to get high it's to treat your symptoms).

I like questions like this, the're dumb, but I cannot stand not knowing the answer. Lastly un-medically related do heavy water ice cubes float in tap water (heavy water = deuterium = D20 =2H2O). No offense intended, just the truth: You don't know what you're talking about and I find it astoundingly irresponsible of you to publicly provide inaccurate information on this controversial subject. Both drugs are uppers/speed and both drugs are amphetamines. Meth is generally illicit whereas Adderall is legally prescribed. Adderall and methamphetamine are closely related. Adderall is the brand name of a pharmeceutical mixture of racemic amphetamine and dextroamphetamine salts, whereas methamphetamine is the methylated form of the amphetamine molecule and most is most commonly known for being sold in the streets (note: there is a legal pharmeceutical form of methamphetamine called by the brand name Desoxyn, but this is lesser known than the often adulterated street methamphetamine). In layman's terms, the answer to your question is yes, Adderall is "like" (similiar) to a legal meth because their molecular structure is closely related as well as their mechanism of action and subjective perception. If you don't care to know the chemistry behind the differences between the two, all you need to know is that methamphetamine is 1) more potent and euphoric than Adderall due to its higher lipid solubility and 2) it is often adulterated and sold as a recreational street drug. Getting into a little more detail, brand name Adderall is actually a combination of four variations on the amphetamine molecule, called amphetamine salts. These salts include dextroamphetamine salts and racemic amphetamine salts, but never just levoampehatmine salts as the left handed isomer is not pyschoactive by itself. I most certainly do not know the reaction I do apologize for that. Anything past a couple molecules and I start to lose ability to see reactions unless I've experienced them like when a guy at work was using PVC in the laser cutter. The PV stayed on the table, but C started fumigating the room. I'm very interested in the chemistry. If you would post or link me to a starting place to understand reactions (like h2+2(o2) -->heat 2(h2o)). I can see the water example easily not only by the formula, but also on a periodic table knowing the ionization. So in the oops with the laser cutter this would be the formula for PVC: CH2=CHCl (I hope that's right). it's only slightly more complex, but besides the CL vaporizing I can not figure out what the products would be and it's not even organic. so back on topic, the base line is that all the drugs eventually break down to just amphetamine correct? or is my logic way off. Also is there a comparison to the formulaic equations? I stared at all of the chemical formulas and models associated with all the drugs and more or less the structure is same, which I would assume is how one would know if something is in the amphetamine group? Lastly what causes the differences in effects chemically. Am I correct in terms bioavailability? Adderall makes me extremely irritable were as Vyvanse does not and this was for most people I talk to that also have taken both medications. Also the reaction time of all the drugs are different Vyvanse takes an hour to kick in where as Adderall is about 30 minutes and from watching invention I assume street meth is about instant, but that's way I was harping on the bioavailability because street meth is usually injected or smoked. But I do not know if that can be neglected even if all the drugs were injected. Lisdexamfetamine from what I've read seems to need to go through the liver in order to break down to d-amphetamine. it was designed so that d-amphetamine is not free in the bloodstream. It was a way to stop abuse. (meaning if Vyvanse is injected the effect is the same as if it were ingested, I do not know and I'm not going to try it). However that does not explain the differences in affects of each drug backing the original question whether it be Vyvanse, Adderall or street meth do they all break down to amphetamine? if so what causes the difference in affects each drug ignoring dosage and intake method. I'm sure this would be easier to explain looking at the model. I'll stop talking and wait for a rebuttal. I should have used a lot more question marks in my first post and again I apologize I do want to mislead anyone.

This topic looked like a place where I could get a few questions answered.  I've been taking adderall xr 15mg for over a year now.  I do not abuse it, but I really love the way it makes me feel.  Before adderall I was a C student.  After using adderall for little over a year I graduated with a 3.4.  In my first 3 years of college I was really outgoing and partied all the time.  After a year on aderrall I tended to stray away from socializing and terminated many friendships.  Im sure other people have had different experiences on the drug, but if anyone can relate to me please give me some advice or some insight on the topics below( for example how can I learn to adjust to these behaviors while on the drug):

1.  I feel easily agitated and paranoid(not to a dangerous extent, more like I feel insecure) at peak hours of the drug.

2.  I have trouble sleeping at night, so sometimes I use sleeping pills.

3.  Are there long term health effects of the drug?  Does adderall destroy parts of the brain?   

4.  When I'm on the drug I do not feel like socializing and in addition I tend to lack empathy(not caring about others feelings) while on the drug. 

Just want to know if other people have had the same experience as I have had and if so how did you cope with it? 

 

 

Will adderall show up on a pre employment drug screen as methamphetamine? I took 1 a day for about 3 weeks and I'm planning a pre employment drug screen the end of december. Will it show up? It's been a week since I took any.

So what is the difference between meth and speed then?

I know this is an old post, but I cannot let ignorance and false statements go unchecked. bluedog is not correct; for example "speed" is one of the street names for methamphetamine. Adderall is very much like street meth in that they are both amphetamines and both addictive; even in small dosages. A key difference is how they are made and so the "cleanness" of the drugs is an important distinction. Another similarity is that abusing either drug has similar negative affects. One of my good friends took Adderall for a few years and had to be weened off of it because of it physically and psychologically addictive nature. If you really want to know, then please do some reading on Amphetamine versus Methamphetamine. So to accurately answer your question, Adderall is similar to meth, but it does have differences. Essentially, methamphetamine is a stronger amphetamine.

The other drugs have nothing to do with your son taking adderall, im sorry but your son experimented with drugs just like many other teenagers, while the other drugs were all recreational Adderall might be the one that was actually helping him. Not to say that he doesen't enjoy the feeling of being on it but if your son legitimate ADHD it definetly helps him. Its not the same for someone taking it who needs it and someone who does not. I have ADD and OCD and Aderall helps me focus and ignore my OCD urges. However my friend who does not have ADHD and takes it describes something completly different from what I experience and it can be bad in that sense. If your son had ADHD he might actually need Aderall to feel a little more normal. Have you ever read text and not understood anything you jsut read in a whole page because your mind was completly elsewhere? well thats kind of how it is for your son all the time and not just with reading.

I've never done meth, but I think comparing it to adderall is ridiculous. I think we've all seen someone who is on meth and what is does to them, physically and emotionally.. not pretty. I've been on adderall since I was about 14 for ADD, it was a life saver while I was in school. I'm now 23 & I still take it daily. I take a very low dose.. only 10 mg's 2 times a day, and for me all it does is make me feel normal. I don't get a high from it, and i'm certainly not addicted to it. People who don't have ADD don't understand what it's like. I literally feel like a zombie, I cannot concentrate on anything and doing normal everyday things are a challenge. For someone who doesn't have ADD, adderall would cause too much stimulation so it would be like taking speed.. but for someone who has ADD, there isn't enough stimuation in the brain so all the adderall does it make them feel normal. Unless of course you're taking a very dose, that's a different story. If it's taken by the prescribed dosage, by someone who needs it, then it's perfectly safe.

I take adderall 10mg between once and twice a day, it helps me concentrate and helps me get done what i need done. i have been taking stimulant based ADD meds beginning in 3rd grade and now I am a sophomore in college. In high school i voluntarily stopped taking it for over three years and i didn't have said withdraws or urges to get a fix. Like any drug adderall can be abused but if you're not a dumb a** and you take a responsible amount you'll be fine. There's a difference in seeking a high and wanting to correct a problem with ADD. Oh and to the concerned soccer mom your son likely experimented with other drugs first i.e Weed and worked his way up to adderall and you and the doctor were foolish enough to give him a script and even more foolish to let him up his dose that was already at 20mg. he knew what he was doing and he was not a victim off adderall.

I completely agree. I have taken Vyvanse and now take Adderall. I only switched due to cost when I changed jobs and, as a result, insurance health plans. I used to abuse illegal drugs to self-medicate and concentrate. I'm normal now and have put those bad habits to rest. Adderall is no gate way drug.
