My husband has had severe itching and pain in his left shoulder for over 2 years now. There is nothing at all to see.

After going to his Gp he was refered to a Neorologist, after numerous test and MRI scans it turned out to be a small benign tumer in his neck just above his shoulder which was pressing on his nerve causing the sypmtoms. He is currently on a waiting list for the opereration. Hopefully it should cure the problem i will keep you posted.

Hope this might help as i know it's is been driving my husband crazy, it might not be the same for you but it might be worth getting it checked out !

Hi I too have had this problem for about 2 months now on my upper left shoulder around the blade area and also have a sunburn type of sensation. Also I suffer from lower back problems due to an accident. I will see if I can get my doctor to look at it. :'(

I have a itchy area on my back and it also feels like something microscpoic is moving around in my back in that area. It was in the left side for a while but now the something microscopic moving around feeling is also in my right side same area. That feeling has intensified. So has the itch.

I've had this itchy right shoulder for several years. My doctor suggested it was a nerve. I saw a dermatologist at a health fair last year who had a name for it, but I don't remember what it was. She had one piece of good advice - don't scratch, use a cold sports creme.

I have had the same sort of thing for 3 years now. It started on my left shoulder and then worked its way across to my right and is mainly now on the upper arm/shoulder area and it is driving me crazy! I have seen several Doctors, none of whom would refer me to a dermatologist because they said there was nothing to see, have had blood tests and tried various tablets and creams and NOTHING has worked! The last Dr I saw said he thought it was psycho-genetic!!!!
If any of you get any more results from Drs, please share with the rest of us. Now it's summer, the itch is even worse!!

I too have had an itchy area on my left shoulder blade (left side of the left blade ).
It's been there for over a year but is getting worse. I have no idea what is causing this? There are no marks or skin dscoloration?
It just itches and has a little "throb" on occassion.

i'm only 17 and i've had this for about 3 years. it's itching, but when i scratch it my skin feels kind of numb and weird compared to the skin on my right shoulder blade (which isnt affected, its just below my left shoulder blade that itches!). the itching kind of turns into burning when i scratch and sometimes it can even feel like theres liquid in there or internal bleeding or something. the itching certainly doesnt soothe it, it just dulls it into a pain rather than a horrible irritating itch. its always flaring up, i never get like a day break because its constantly coming back all day every day. its just down right sore sometimes, like right now, without even itching first...

i went to the doctor a few months back and she didn't do any scans and just put it down to it being nothing and gave me a cool gel to rub on it when it got itchy or sore but it was a messy treatment, obviously, and in the middle of school i cant just stop to get this gel out and ask someone else to apply it for me because i cant reach the area properly... but on my birthday last week it was really AWFUL, it would not stop, i had to get a cold compress in college and that only soothed the itch whilst i held it on the area.. as soon as i removed it the itch was back but the compress didnt take away the pain at all..

i went back to the doctor two days later, it was a different doc and he didn't want to do any scans or xrays either. my mum had been trying to research what it is and made a few suggestions to him but he ignored them all. he put it down to neuropathic and prescribed me 10mg (so VERY LOW dosage) of amitriptyline.. so yeh. its an antidepressant but it isnt strong enough to affect me for those kind of reasons! anyway, ive only been on it for about a week and he said give it atleast 4 before i decide if it works or not but since ive been taking them the area has been SO sore, slightly itchy but im more in constant painnnn if i'm honest..

bad times.

It is a nerve problem, ELAVIL helped me, maybe you should try it, it works and you can take a very small dose.
The only thing you have to lose is the itching. Sometimes it itches but not all the time and i just double my dose for one day and it stops ..
Nerve Issues casue itching, I hope this helps you all.

I have the same thing... itching, intense burning, right shoulder. Since I was quite young I've spent many hours sitting on the floor leaning over and drawing or writing. I can recall feeling strain in my back or even numbness after some time. In my early teens (15/16) my upper spine would feel constricted and would crack and release when I stretched it by pulling my shoulders out and away from my spine and inward toward my chest, or by thrusting my chest out and arching my upper back. The more I did this the more it seemed I needed to. I heard conflicting viewpoints on whether or not this was actually a healthy practice, but the itching, burning and numbness started to occur around this time and increased along with the frequency of the habit. Once I began paying closer attention to my posture and also NOT cracking my upper spine and NOT RUBBING at the spot or doing anything to irritate the nerve (wear loose clothing if possible), the symptoms eventually faded. Recently I fell into the same bad habits again. And what do you know, itchy, burny shoulder! I am going to do the same thing as last time and let you all know what results I get. My guess is, rest the area and watch your posture. Subtle changes in posture can stress out certain areas of your back. When I took good care of my back and allowed it to relax over time, the symptoms completely disappeared and I was unbothered by them for about 15 years. My guess is that the longer it's been going on the longer it will take to heal. But give it a try; the solution may actually be simple.

Have any of you been using the nicotine patch? maybe that is the case. I have just developed this itching pain after I used the patch. Or maybe it was caused by pulling a muscle. Not to sure though.

This condition is probably Notalgia Paraesthetica, its a condition caused by nerve cells that provide feeling to the skin on your upper back. Although the docs aren't sure what the cause is, some surmise that it's caused by a pinched nerve. They usually prescribe creams. If that doesn't help, they may prescribe oral anti-seizure medicine like Gabapentin. If that doesn't work they may do a nerve block or in worse case, spine surgery. The dark spot on the skin is caused by repeated scratching which in time thickens the skin.

This is funny and strange...I have been experiencing this problem for years. My husband and kids are fed up with scratching my back and try to find the correct spot. My son used a marker to circle the spot... I attribute the itchiness’ to my thyroids condition. However, from my observation I believed that it is also link to Diabetic. Literally, after two years of the itching I was diagnosed with Diabetes. I was in a car accident several years prior and had lower back injury. I am not a medically inclined but my instinct of myself is that they are all link... the nerve, blood level, muscle and tissue/skin. That is my opinion. What helps for me is keeping my BS level normal and my thyroids level under control through frequented testing. Also, regular mercerise walking and regular massages of my shoulder and back and a good moistening lotion. It seem like a lot but if I don’t I will be itching 24/7. By following my principles above me can go for months without an itch.
