I have had this itch as well. It's my left shoulder blade. I've actually used a rough hair brush to scratch this itch. Back scratchers just don't cut it. I'll scratch until the itch goes away but soon the itch comes back. I never really thought anything of it until I did a google search and all these weird things started popping up. I don't have any allergies or reactions to anything. There isn't any discoloration or rash. No bumps or anything. It's actually more of a deep itch. I have to really scratch to satisfy. I'm kind of tired of asking people to help scratch the area because it's not exactly the easiest place to reach by myself. Should I be concerned? I haven't had any injuries to my back. I do however have a tattoo in the middle of my back between my shoulder blades. Could this have something to do with it? I can't recall when this itch started but it's been itchy for at least the past year.

OH MY GOSH! I HAVE THIS TOO! ITS ON MY LEFT SHOULD BLADE AS WELL! IT literally drives me crazy. I ALWAYS tell people to check my back to see if theres anything on it on that spot, THERE IS NOTHING EVER! it looks completely normal! and I always have people scratch my back gently cause its my favorite feeling in the world and ill tell them 'go to my spot and scratch it hard' and they know exactly what im talking about. OR if someone comes up to me and pats me on the back on that spot, it is SO sensitive! it almost hurts when they do!!

i have to say i am amazed at how many other people suffer with the same thing?! i have had this issue for a year now, i first noticed it shortly after getting glassed in the face and neck, but i dont know if this is linked..? also worrying how another person expierienced it after being diagnosed with diabetes as a lot of diabetes is in my family. it is a maddening condition and no one seems to understand i saw my doctor and they said there was nothing wrong with me. its just like sunburn, its very painfull and at certain times it flares up more than others. its constantly itchy on my left shoulderblade doc just looked at me as if i was mad because you cant see anything :(.. i have spent a few year painting and always do deskwork if only there was a straight forward answer to this :(

I have been having this issue for 3 months now. It started with back pain in the area, which my doctor believed was a muscle spasm. After using a heated pad the pain went away. Now I have the itching every day. I have been thinking it is my posture since I am tall (6'2") and sit down all day and stare down at computer.

Also, I tore ligaments in my shoulder about 17 years ago, I wonder if that attributed to this.

I just ordered new monitor stands to raise my monitors so that I can improve my posture by looking straight instead of down. I'll post my results in a few weeks.

Just watch that the tingling itching sensationgs don't turn into pain and prickling sensations and spread out also to other parts of your body. Could be symptoms of MS. This happens over a long period of time.

I went to the dermatologist today for an itchy spot that's discolored. She told me it was called notalgia paresthetica, related to nerves in the spine or neck.

For decades i've had an intense unrelentless deep burning itch. it's usual route is down my forearms OR both scapular regions (shoulderblade area). i had a bad bike accident 25 years ago and again 3 yrs. ago suffered high-degree whip-lash secondary to being rear-ended . after many years seeing various specialists i've been told it stems from my cervical spine region. my C-4 and 5 were injured and i continued to work as an ER RN for 20 more years. The pathways of certain nerves usually in your cervical spine will effect your forearms. Plus a "trapped" or impinged nerve most anywhere in your back will create a "stinging" sensation. The most effective OTC topical cream i use is called "SARNA". i buy it @ Walmart. About $10 for a large pump bottle. i've used RX Capsacian before. Personally, it burns too much. Give Sarna a try. also, apply ICE compresses to the area that itches. The ice deadens the nerve endings and it works great. Good luck. Now go get some sleep!

I've had this for 35 years now - it comes and goes and is with me at the moment. I put Germolene on it - difficult though it is to get at - and this seems to anaesthetise if for a while. Otherwise I have been to various GPs who can see nothing and don't seem to have a clue about it. They also look sceptical when I mention Notalgia Parasthetica. There seems to be no permanent cure unfortunately

Dear People,

I'm a Massage Therapist that has suffered with this itch for over 15 years (left side too). There are 2 things I've found to be successful in calming the itch and preventing it.
1) apply pure peppermint oil liberally to the itch, you may want to do a skin test first to make sure you are not reactive to the oil, if so you can dilute it.  This will quiet and take the itch away often for hours.  You can also try the medicated pain patches like "SALONPAS", if they have menthol or mint in them.

2)  Strengthen your Rhomboid muscles regularly.  When I did weight training and also the rowing machine, it was miraculous.  I think when the rhomboids are weak and tight, they irritate the nerves responsible.  Try it and you will be grateful!!  Working on your posture is also important for that area of your spine.  Good luck and let me know how it works for you.

I have the same itchy sensation, but mine's a spot directly over the front right hipbone.  There's no dryness, no discolouration, no rash, NOTHING, just the constant itch and a slightly numb feeling when I touch the area.
