I have had this for several years, and have been a bit obsessed with finding a remedy. My wife can scratch it for twenty minutes and it feels good, but the itch continues when she stops. A chiropractor guessed that my stomach might be pressing on a nerve. While I'm not considered overweight, I have noticed the frequency and intensity changes with diet and weight. If I have been to an event with lots of processed foods - chips, soda, the next day the itch flares up. Moreover, the closer I am to my ideal weight, the less acute the symptoms. Gluten products don't help either. Try a month of exercise, and lean meats with fruits and vegetables and see if that doesn't make a difference. If it doesn't, it won't hurt you! If it helps, thank me by petting a friendly dog on the head, and never walk by a Salvation Army bucket without stopping. Good luck.

My experience with my Doctors on this problem has been the same: they take it very easy; some do not even bother to see or understand the discomfort one is facing. I am 57, and have had this disturbance for over 6 years now. Terrible with heat, and when i take fish, meat, and poultry. It began as a rot of one hair root; we squeezed it out and then emerged a black spot of 0.5cm diameter; later the sport became 2cm diameter; later the itching spread up to the left breast. With this funny problem, one wants to hear of any cure, and I will surely tell if i strike one. My last Doctor said this is to do with the lymph node, and we must take foods that clean this.

After several months with the same problem, a constant itch just below my shoulder blade on my left side, I consulted my primary physician who, after having no answer for me sent me to see a dermatologist. She had no luck with a diagnosis either. Finally saw a nerve conduction specialist for an unrelated issue and the subject came up during my appointment. Finally got a diagnosis. Notalgia Paresthetica. Notalgia paraesthetica is a common localized itch, affecting mainly the interscapular area but occasionally with a more widespread distribution, involving the shoulders, back, and upper chest. The characteristic symptom is pruritis (itch or sensation that makes a person want to scratch) on the back, usually on the left hand side below the shoulder blade (mid to upper back). It is occasionally accompanied by pain, paresthesia (pins and needles), and/or hyperesthesia (unusual or pathologically increased sensitivity of the skin to sensory stimuli, such as pain, heat, cold, or touch), which results in a well circumscribed hyperpigmentation of a skin patch in the affected area. There is no cure but there are treatment options available. Hope this helps.

I have a rare spinal arthritis which might be an underlying cause of My right shoulder blade itching constantly, known as A.S.,Anklosyn spondilitis. Always scratching it raw!I have a back scratcher for the car,by the bed and couch.A skin specialist said it was dried skin, but He looked at it at least twelve feet away beyond the doorway of the examining room.It could be from medicines,I guess? Who knows? Sometimes My left shoulder blade will occasionally itch also, but not as often,as the right one, does!

I had the exact same itch. Went to a GI doctor for stomach pains-unrelated to the itch, but she found I had gallstones. After I had the surgery the itch finally went away. I never connected the two but I'm itch free. Best of luck.

I'm dealing with this too. After reading a lot of the comments, it sounds like it is a posture thing. I have recently stopped working out and have been on my computer sitting up in my bed with a slump in my shoulders and this started after about a week of this. I had my husband look at it and there isn't anything there.....it almost feels like a bruise but when my husband starts rubbing it the pain goes away and it doesn't itch anymore. Very weird but I think it is notalgia paresthetica. It had me scared until I read a few different comments on a few different sites. I had to laugh at the one comment about back scratchers in the bedroom, living room, and kitchen.....I keep forgetting to buy one....I'm using my sons ruler....lol

Yes, I think it has to do with food allergies. I have an almost perpetual rash on my back as well as that one spot near the shoulder blade which itches the most. I think it might be a wheat allergy, but I have also wondered if it has something to do with the radiation from the computer. I've been eating wheat my whole life, but the general rash did not occur until after I got my computer.

I just found this re what they are calling Ribo-Rash.
It is connected to food allergies. In this case the food additives.
You might want to search further along those lines.
Possibly Citic Acid is part of the problem. All your packaged meats have that soaker pad under them which is saturated with citric acid.

I have had the same thing. I have an area about 2 inches by 2 inches on my back left shoulder that gets very itchy anywhere from 1 to 4 times a day. There is nothing there. It is a very deep itch. Sometimes scratching helps other times it makes it more intense. No one has been able to tell me what is causing it.
