Wow. I am so glad that I am not the only one that has had this experience!
I am currently 2 weeks back on the cambridge diet and (12lbs down today) and my rash has started to reappear >:(
Has anyone else tried the spirulina? I am going to buy some online now, just wondered if you had to take the 'large doses' and what the large doses were (mentioned above)

I was on the cambridge diet for 6 days (Sole Source) before I developed a very unsightly rash. The rash was on my forehead, the middle of my back and the middle of my chest. When I worked out I would perspire mostly in those particular areas. I didnt know what the rash was. I went to the doctor and still no answer. The rash looked like red welts that was filled with fluid. My skin would weap...I used antihistamine and stopped the diet immediately. It is amazing to see so many others have experienced this horrible reaction...I thought I was allergic to some of the ingredients!!
Thank you for some answers! FINALLY

Hi there - Ii know it's been a long time since you posted this - but did the spirulina do the trick???
I did the atkins successfully bout 5 years ago and lost about 30lbs, tried about 3 years ago and gave up because of the rash and now I'm trying again, the rash is back. In my hairline, armpits and on my chest.
Might buy the spirulina anyway - just wondered about the outcome.
Cheers

I am so seriously grateful to have found this thread and to have read all your responses. I first developed this rash when I started phase one of the South Beach diet. It went away eventually and I thought it must've been due to a detergent allergy or something. Now I suspect that it's b/c I started doing phase 2 of the diet which has more carbs.
A year later I tried Atkins and I developed the same rash. Btw, I should mention that this rash was crazy. It was all over my back (esp my shoulders), the sides and tops of my breasts, and the sides of my torso. It started off as large red bumps, but they would blister b/c I scratched them so much. One doctor even diagnosed me with shingles b/c the blistering was so severe! (The dermy saw me right after though and said "This is NOT -- N - O - T -- shingles".) Another doc said it was erythema something. Anyway, no one ever came up with the solution. I did ask them whether they thought it could be diet related and all of them said no, that there was no connection.
Anyway, my friends convinced me to stop Atkins and what do you know, the rash disappeared. That is, until two days ago. I was actually a little scared b/c I am NOT on a low-carb diet. I have, however, eaten very little this past week b/c of a terrible case of salmonella poisoning that I picked up at a conference. I have been eating carbs (mainly rice and bread), but my calorie intake has probably been around 400 cals/day b/c of my lack of appetite.
So anyway, I'm googling around and I read that ketosis can be induced through low-carb diets, yes, but it can also be induced through fasting. HALLELUJAH. An answer. No matter what the docs say, I am convinced that for whatever reason, my body hates ketosis.
The rash has gotten worse since last night even though I ate more than 1400 calories yesterday, but I figure it's my body just finishing up with its reaction. At least, I hope so! I'm going to continue eating more and 'll post back with an update.

ok, so i posted the reply above this one. and ive been doing some research, and i think we may have this:
its saying their are many triggers to it. and it makes sence that is last a certain number of years and eventually if you're lucky it goes away on its own. luck through it look at the links, and pictures. its the only thing that looks like what i have. i went to the university clinic recently. and the "not smart" doctor and dermatologist said i had scabies. she didn't even pay attention wen i told her i get this like once or more a year. scabies looks totally different and it is highly contagious, i have gone to other docs before and they said it wasn't contagious. and another thing, scabies in most cases is sexually transmitted, and im a virgin. needless to say thats the worst use of $40 ever, and i have creams now to kill "the scabies parasites" which i'm not even going to use bc first im 100% sure i don't have that and 2 i dont want my skin reaction to get worse. but yea, sorry for rambling about this, i just wanted to show docs aren't always right, especially university doctors. but check out the link, i fell that that is probably what we have :-)

Last Oct I changed my diet for health reasons to a plant based, whole foods diet (nutritarian - veggies, fruit, beans, some grains, nuts, no added fat, minimal meat). I lost 10 or 12 pounds and in late Jan started breaking out in hives all over my body. Doctors prescribed antihistamines which were useless and may have made them worse. I spoke with a nutrition oriented MD who confirmed my suspicions that I am detoxing through my skin. Toxins from drugs, poor eating, etc. are stored in the fat, when you lose weight they are released into your body. I gained 20 pounds 6 years ago while taking a very toxic drug for 6 weeks for a severe infection. The drug was one I was likely to be allergic to. I did not have an allergic reaction at the time, but have had severe itching and hives while losing weight. Of course, I likely released other stored toxins as well. I consumed only vegetable juice for 7 days at the end of March and lost 10 more pounds. With acupuncture, Chinese herbs, and a cleansing diet (veggies and rice primarily) the hives and itching seem to be subsiding. It has not been pleasant, but I feel certain I will be healthier when this episode is over. Good luck to all.

I am doing Atkins and losing weight and experiencing the rash in torso area. My theory is that as the fat is burned, the toxins that were stored in it are now released and so they are processed out through the skin. Remember, the body uses fat to store toxins to keep away from vital organs, etc. Removing the fat without first removing the toxins seems the logical cause to me. It makes sense that spirulina would help the situation, because spirulina is excellent at detoxifying the body. So using spirulina to help the body remove toxins being moved into the bloodstream due to fat loss makes a lot of sense.

I discovered this discussion upon googling "ketosis rash" because I suspected it may be my dieting efforts that led to my own rash and after reading everyone's input, I'm fairly certain of it. I first got a rash under my armpits back in 2005 when I started up the Atkins diet for a second time. I lost 15 pounds with it the first time and started it up again about a year later because I needed to lose more. A couple months in, I got an itchy red rash that looked like red bumps close together. As soon as I began eating normally again, the rash went away. Several weeks ago, I started taking HCG drops, which allows you to lose weight extremely quickly. During the first week, I noticed that there were a few dark spots on my armpits. Then when I shaved, my armpits broke out in itchy red bumps. This turned into a rash that spread down the sides of my breasts, a little over the top and underneath. Then it broke out along my spine in my lower back. I thought maybe it was related to fungus b/c it looks similar to pics I found when googling and I started using Lamisil, which is for athlete's foot, ringworm and jock itch, and that helped just a little tiny bit. Last night I ate a normal dinner that included bread, and today the rash is much improved. I'm frustrated b/c I want to continue using the HCG drops and following the low-carb diet that goes with it but I can't stand the rash! I will try the hydrogen peroxide and spirulina and report back if that helps. Thanks everyone for their input here!

Yeah I get the rash everytime I lose a bunch of weight on the low carb diet. I believe it's a combo of micotoxins stored in the fat cells and die off of Candida.
I get it about a week after I first go on, or if I get dehydrated due to heat and excercise. If I have a four pound loss in a week, there's a good chance I'll start itching. It's still possible that it's a food allergy as I tend to eat things on the low carb diet I don't eat much of at other times. But I've never been able to figure out what it might be. I have come to the conclusion that it isn't a food allergy for me. It sucks, but I guess I'd rather itch for a couple of weeks and lose the weight.
If you ever read Doug Kaufman's work on fungus the connection becomes quite startling. It's hard to ignore. Virtually all the serendipitous benefits of a low carb diet can be attributed to reduced levels of Candida in the system. Low carb diets of course shut off the easy food supply to the overgrowth.

Hi
I have just finished week 1 of the Cambridge diet and have lost 7lb. Yesterday I started getting an itchy rash on my stomach, hips and under arm. It sounds like the same rash, but just in different places to you guys. I was going to go to the doctors, but had an inkling they would be no use. Am going to try spirulina and will let you know!

hey,
I have been in ketosis for 3 weeks now and I noticed I had a rash on my upper chest just below my neck. It does not itch and is not raised it looks like little red marks. Has anyone had a rash like this being on ketosis?

I'm also SO GLAD I found this thread. My rash is exactly the same as what George describes. It started yesterday, on my chest. I noticed today that I also have it on my back and shoulders. The bumps are very tiny and don't really itch. I googled it and it *looks* like something called keratosis pilaris alba (or 'chicken skin'). However, I'm pretty sure that although the rash as I'm experiencing looks the same as this condition, it's *not*, because 'chicken skin' is a chronic condition- I know people who have it -and I have never experienced this before. Now that I read through the posts here, I'm quite sure it's because I've been on Atkins for 9 days. Funny thing, I haven't yet purchased a pack of ketostix and was wondering if I had hit ketosis yet- I'm reassured that the diet is working, although this is quite an unpleasant way to find out LOL. I have done Atkins before, years ago, and did not experience any rashes while losing weight, and I did lose about 15 lbs. That was almost 10 years ago, however. As I write it feels like the rash is becoming itchy, but that could just be psychological (the 'skeevies'). I just bought AmLactin which is a lotion with 12% lactic acid that's used to treat keratosis pilaris but I'm going to start taking my green supplements again. I was not taking them for about a week because one serving has about 3g net carbs, but I think its well worth it because they have a high spirulina content, along with other detoxifying herbs and probiotics. The brand I use is The Vitamin Shoppe Bio Greens, I highly recommend them. I'm also going to cut back a *little* on my fat intake, I was just splashing the olive oil all over everything because its healthy fat, and fat helps the body reach ketosis faster.
I would like to hear from some of the people who posted earlier in the thread, what they did to address the problem and whether or not it worked.
