I've been coming back to this thread for about 3 months after I broke out in hives from a ketogenic diet. I had been doing a moderate carb (less than 100g), high fat (ie. "good" fat like fish, olive oil, almonds), with plenty of veggies for over a year and had no problems. I then switched to a fattier approach by eating 4 strips of bacon every morning and about a week into it I started developing hives (urticaria to be exact) all over my body. I would sit on a couch for a few minutes and the back of my thighs would be covered in welts. At first I thought it was pet dander or dirty sheets, but after cleaning the house entirely it didn't make them go away. I had two sessions of steroid shots plus a 6-day drug called Methylprednisolone. The drugs and shots worked temporarily, but the hives came back (less aggressive after the second shot, but still prevalent). I tried all the aforementioned remedies like spurlina and eating bread or eating things to counteract the histamine imbalance, but still they would come back. Usually everyday in the evening, they would start popping up. Even in the morning, soon as I woke up they would start appearing. I thought it was environmental because I seemed to get it more at my boyfriend's place than at mine, but they wouldn't disappear entirely at my place. Anyways, long story short, turns out I may have developed a vitamin D deficiency. I do remember taking vitamin D almost everyday when I was on a moderate keto diet and entirely forgetting to take them after I started eating things like bacon and pork fat. I use a lot of sunscreen so getting enough vitamin D was important to me. I googled "urticaria vitamin" and a study on linking vitamin D deficiency and patients with urticaria came up. I took a multivitamin and a vitamin D last night, and I've had no signs of hives or itchiness all day. I hope this is helpful, as I was at my wits end and couldn't imagine living any longer with a dependency on Benadryl to get through the day. Good thing I cancelled my skin scratch test (I don't have any allergies). Beware of going to derm doctors who don't have any experience or knowledge about urticaria or low-carb diet side effects, it seems they just prescribe antihistamines and steroid shots without understanding the root problem. Good luck to those looking for solutions!

Hi there! I was reading your post and remind me my own situation! I believe that the only way to balance hives problem is through strict low histamine diet and be relax! Because stress makes the problem worse!
i don't eat fermented at all ( vinagre, alcohol, mature cheese). No red tomatoes! But I can eat green or yellow tomatoes. The problem with red tomatoes are that ripe very fast and is high histamine! No chocolate, no spinich! Look the site of the low histamine chef, Yasmin's has been doing loads of research collecting information from specialist and researchers in this issue!
I'm staying away of artificial colorant and preservatives! I eat very fresh an most clean food that I can! Left overs are full of histamine I never eat food that has been cooked for long time! When my level of histamine is low I can cheat a little bit!
I feel much better! I have peace! Blessings to all the people that are in the same situation! Rosie

I am going to try a detox . If that doesnt work I will try supplementing again with DAO before meals The Urticaria I have is of the type that looks and feels like midge bites - very itchy and scabs if the skin breaks. Some spots come and go in a day but most sray put for several days before fading. No large patches yet but may get 2 or 3 together. Usually in places where clothing was tight or pressing on the skin for long eg at night. So far have had no Angiodema.
