Wow! It's amazing how many people are actually being effected. I'm only 23, I'm very active & initially thought it was just a lower back muscle strain. But when I would wake up in the mornings/in the middle of the night, I would only be relieved (slightly) by urinating. After so, all the pressure would disappear but this would only happen every 2 or 3 months...for about 2 nights or so. It used to seem like both kidneys but now it's my left one that seems to give me the most problems now.

It's actually been about 3yrs I'd say now. Unfortunately, the pain is more persistent. It seems to linger now more than ever. It doesn't hurt to breath as much as it used to but the pain seems to sit with more longer throughout the day.

If anyone has figured out/heard anything that would/could help, please let me know. It's beginning to worry a little.

i just started havein somewhat of the same issue for the past 6 months. i have to urinate often to begin with for some reason. anyway, when i wake up in the morning my kidneys hurt bad, too bad to even breath in deeply. i go right to the bathroom to unrinate and the pain dissapates quickly. my kidneys doo seem to ache throughout the day afterwards but not like in the morning until i urinate.

i just cant understand why our doctors are so stupid!!!!!WTF. they get paid all this money yet every time i go in for anything i never get a diagnosis!!! they never know what it is. 8-|

I have the same problem for 3 weeks now and will see Urologist later this week. Back pain only occurs after hours of sleep and disappears a few minutes after getting up. The link mentions urine flowing back to kidney which seems to make sense that pain occurs while lying down.

I've been fighting with this myself for a few years now. For me, it's just my left kidney and it only hurts when I lay down. Some nights, I'm awakened by the pain and have had to resort to sleeping the rest of the night on my couch in more of a sitting position. I've noticed that when the more I exercise, the less likely I am to feel it. Staying hydrated throughout the day also helps. I do drink a lot of coffee, and I know caffeine is a diuretic which essentially drains the water from your body so I make it a point to drink a lot of water to offset that. The thing is, since I don't sleep well because of the pain, I need the caffeine to stay alert throughout the day. I've cut off other caffeinated beverages (such as soda) completely and I do drink at least one glass of juice to replace electrolytes lost while drinking so much water throughout the day. I'm guessing the exercise helps because is boosts the metabolism and staying hydrated keeps the kidneys from overworking. So far, no pain when urinating and no blood though.

I'm a 26 year old female with the same problem of kidney pain (in the right kidney) in the early morning after sleeping. It's been occurring for about 3 years, on and off, without seeming to get worse.

I can add a few things to this discussion:

For me, it's definitely not a problem of too much calcium, and thus unlikely to be related to kidney stones. However, my nutrition is pretty poor overall (broke college student) so it might be a lack of something.

I have the same symptoms as everyone else (happens after sleeping, especially if I sleep "too long;" alleviated by sleeping with my head elevated, sitting up or standing, or urinating; cutting down on caffeine and hydrating myself properly seems to reduce its occurrence; etc.).

I've been told at medical checkups through the years that I seem to be in a chronic state of slight dehydration, which makes sense given that I drink too much caffeine and not enough healthy fluids. I plan to try practicing better hydration and seeing if that helps.

Good luck to everyone else on figuring out what causes this and what we can do about it.

I'm a little relieved to see i'm not the only person that wonders about this. However, only a little. The general consensus is that it's nothing, and even though it goes away after a little after i wake up, it still concerns me.

Same issues as everyone else posted above.

The kidneys hurt for hours after I get up and the eventually I don't feel anything, no pain at all. The longer I sleep the worse the pain is.

I am absolutely amazed to find out so many other experience this.

With me the pain seems to me most noticeable, and the worst in the morning when waking up... pain in my back radiating to what feels like my kidneys. Most of the time the pain will subside within a reasonably short period of being up, and of course urinating first thing. Occasionally, I will experience some discomfort during the day. But for the most part the mornings are the worst. Sound familiar?

I'm 26 and have been expierancing this problem since I was 18. It has always been pretty consistant for me, at least 15x a month. I had an ultrasound about 6 years ago but there was nothing to be seen. I have tried monitoring what I drink before bed, ie: water, beer, soda, tea, milk to see if it makes a differance but for me it does not.

The pain begins for me as well after laying down for approx. 5 hours. It is almost unbearable sometimes, especially when I breathe it feels at though I'm being stabbed in the Kidneys. After I urinate and walk around it subsides but is not completely alleviated for about 15 mins most of the time. However, today for example, I still feel pain when I breathe deeply and I have been up for 4 hours already.

I'm worried about the long term effects this may be causing my body/Kidney's. Has anyone been given a medical diagnosis and or treatment?

hey sheenadj,

All my tests have come back normal in the past. Tell you what I have noticed. this may be totally unrelasted, but you know how when something like this goes on, your mind starts going through every senario, but I have noticed that when I am stressed in general, the pain is worse. Also, when setting at my desk for log periods of time the aching seems to start. I do drink a lot of coffee, so I have tried to slack back on that., and have increased my water intake. Believe it or not, Cranberry Juice seems to help somewhat. I notice that when I drink a lot of it during the day, it is not quite as bad. the next morning. I have also decided to cut back on the different supplements I take. I am cutting back to a good multi vitamin, CoQ10, Vit C, and B complex. , and just leave it at that.

The one thing I notice that most who have posted here have in common, is that it is certainly more comfortable when standing and moving around.

I may have something for all of you to consider: I have the same symptoms (right side), but I also have citric acid sensitivity. When I looked into that problem, I learned that Vitamin D plays a critical role in eliminating citric acid through the kidneys. As soon as I started taking Vitamin D supplements (I don't take any medication at all ever unless I am dying, but felt I should try my hypothesis) my citric acid reaction stopped completely AND my kidney problem worsened for a while. But as soon as the citric acid/stomach aches stopped the kidney problem also stopped.

Both problems began together and ended together so I may be onto something here. Also, at the same time, I gave up all commercial dairy products because I started buying raw milk and cream from a local dairy AND I started wearing sunscreen and hats to keep my skin out of the sun. I also gave up any fish that wasn't local, and unfortunately salmon isn't local. Fortified (commercial) milk, sunlight on your skin and salmon are about the only sources of vitamin D. So if you are lactose intolerant, or you are vegan or you don't like the sun and don't like to eat fish or drink milk, you may have something going on.

I am thinking that once I started taking the Vitamin D my body emptied out large amounts of citric acid, all of it through my kidneys. Normally, citric acid is good for your kidneys because it dissolved stones. But I am thinking maybe it was too much too fast, or maybe it was flushing out small stones or other debris that built up over these last few years of little to know citric acid.

All I know is I feel great! I hope my experience helps someone out there, because I put a TON of work into figuring this out.

I'm 26 and have the same kidney pain as everyone has mentioned for since I was 14. I thought it was because I drank soda to late or something. Then after I noticed that wasn't it, I thought I slept wrong, too much on my side.. it's almost like having a baby through your back. I have to wake my husband up so he can massage the pain away, then after its gone I can go back to sleep. Ive been to the doctor many times as well and they didn't see any changes with my urine, and other test didn't show much. Now that I'm researching I do have high blood pressure so I'm thinking it could have something to do with that. ?

Very surprised to see alot of people with this mysterious kidney pain?
I wonder if this is something serious? Will we need new kidney's around 50? The Dr's don't take this seriously, maybe we should show them this site?

Help.

A few years ago I had this pain in my back and side for a few months and I finally saw a doctor. An ultrasound revealed that I had developed a very narrow (nearly 100% blocked) ureter that was not allowing my kidney to drain properly. My kidney was quite enlarged from the excess fluid. During the day, gravity helped it to drain some, but at night, it wouldn't drain at all , and the kidney would really swell up painfully with fluid. I had a minor surgical procedure where they put me to sleep, went through my urethra with a tiny scope, and cut through the blockage, and put a stent in to allow my kidney to drain and the ureter to heal with a larger opening. Eventually the kidney healed & they removed the stent. It hurt for a few days afterward & the stent was uncomfortable at times, but all in all, very worth it to save my kidney!! I suggest you see a doctor if the pain persists.

well i am up at 3am with the same problem.
I have had it for around ten years now, every six to eight months I wake up in the early hours with the dull ache and sharp pain in my lower right side

i can rarely get comfortable or back to sleep but often my midday the pain has gone completely and I end up cancelling any drs. appointment made because I now feel fine

the pain i have today is the first since the spring time

i am amazed to find so many others with the same issue and I am very sure it is not a kidney stone because their is no pain going to the loo and no passing of blood or any other issue aside from the short term ache

i know i don't drink enough water in the day; the standing up issue is interesting as it is always after sitting upright or standing that I feel better

I have the same problem as most of you - pain in the kidney area upon waking and it subsides after urinating. I take a B multi-vitamin because it helps with nausea I used to have in the mornings for the past 15 years. The pain just started about 2 months ago. I am hypoglycemic, have always had an unquenchable thirst (meaning I drink tons of water), and frequent urination. I guess I should get a test done on my kidneys.
