I get this pain too! But somes at night, and sometimes in the afternoon. But i had it this morning and that is why I looked it up. It is always on the right side. Strange that it is for everyone else, as well. The other thing I am looking into is adrenal fatigue. Your adrenal glands are right on top of your kidneys.

Does anyone have gout symptoms as well? Big toe pain etc? Both my toe and kidney pain seemed to happen at the same time. I read some stuff about high uric acid levels. I'm going to watch my seafood and meat and also try a cherry juice remedy for gout that seems to work for people. I'll post back if it helps.....

I see its been a while since anyone has posted on here, but I found this through a google search. Anyway, if you are having actual back pain (and/or kidney infections) I highly recommend having an ultrasound done of your kidneys. Go to your primary care Dr. and request one. I've never had a lot of kidney issues, but from other problems, I had to have an ultrasound and found that both my kidneys are covered in cysts. The doctors are quite confused at how I'm not in constant pain, but I'm not. Anyway, they said it could be PKD but my kidney function tests are normal thus far. As a result I have stopped drinking caffeine and if I do drink any, my back hurts almost instantly (not to mention I get pretty queesy). I drink water all day long, literally.

I have had this pain for almost 2 years now and I am fed up and close to tears. I to have trouble in the morning but it now seems to be constant and all day. I have had urine tests and scans which seem to come back clear. My doc s are no help and at one point offered me anti depressants as I recently had a little one so blaming this on port natal depression was the answer?. I can t seem to cop with this anymore, it hurts right now I am thinking of heading of to A and E again after I have posted this. Please help, I am starting to worring that the big C is looming. Elena

I too have all the same problems as everyone. I am fed up and have finally (probably long overdue) decided to go to my doctor to see what he says. Anyone have any advice to what I should ask him to do or look for if he dismisses me?

This may help rule out some possible causes for some of you. I am a trim/fit 37 year old male that has not had alcohol in over ten years, never smoked or used drugs. I have never had problems sleeping until a couple weeks ago. I came to china three months ago (and was here for 2 months last year) and intentionally stay as hydrated as possible (to give my imune system every opportuntiy to fight off common germs). I have been getting flank/kidney pain after 5-6 hours of sleeping. Masssage here is cheap...doesn't work. Changed three different beds. I have full range of motion and LOTS of lifting power when required with no daytime pain. My diet has huge variety including lots of meat, chocolate, bread, rice, and vegetables. I take no pills or supplements of any kind. My urine appears and smells normal. The main risk factor I think I have is parasites. Some of the places I have eaten put me at the very high risk area of the parasite scale. When I leave the country I will get stool and blood work at a lab. If any one else has checked these, please let me know.

Okay so I went to the Doc yesterday and like I suspected he didn't know what was going on. My urine test did show a little protein in it, so I have a jug to relieve myself in for a 24 hour period just to make sure that it isn't anything serious. And also I am scheduled for an Ultrasound in a couple of days. So I will let you know how it goes.

I did mention this website so that he did not think that it has only happened to me, because I don't think he has seen anything like it.

I have some of the same issues as Elena has maybe more,.
Which is definitely constant and painful every morning, being so painful causes my mind not to be right and certainly ruins my whole day (want to be normal again)
feels like I'm being tortured and the pain is unbearable
though the bulk of the pain isn't around my kidney/back area
more like my whole body has the type of pain when you over exercise (muscles creating painful acid) this is the pain which makes me severely depressed in the mornings and sometimes through most of the day
it has been really sever the last 5 days or so, I've had alot of tests from the doctors the last few months now, cause originally i had stomach acid issues (well the doctors reckon), also issues with lots of painful gas building up in stomach and intestinal area and also the kidney area, and i presumed from reading on the net it could be celiac (gluten issue) well blood tests show that I dont have celiac, though i did stop eating gluten products and most of the build up gas has completely gone, though i still have this kidney issues and pains through my body, all mainly in the mornings and getting better through the day most of the time, except these last 5 days,.
One thing I've also noticed is when wakening up feels like either i wasn't breathing or my breathing was restricted, well my throat certainly feels burnt from acid and swelled, Might have respiratory acidosis which might be causing my kidney and aid problems not sure as usual im the one trying to figure it all out.

I've had ultrasounds upper and lower stomach, colonostrophy and gastrophy, few different blood tests not sure what they were for, well one was for celiac, so far the've only found I have a 1 cm gallstone,.

Anyway going to try another witch doctor this Monday as its getting to unbearable Sad

sorry went on a bit

cheerz ed

ps: its just after 6pm now feeling much better but not right and i surely worry about going to sleep

Hello, i have exactly the same symtoms stated by many of you here. Only had it 3 days. I wake around 5AM with pain both sides where i believe my kidneys to be, i get out of bed and urinate. Not sure if this helps but i can return to sleep if i sleep on my back. I also put a pllow behind my knees which seems to help. If i lie on my side it hurts more, again a pillow between the knees seems to help in this case. After tossing and turning for my last hour in bed i give up and get up. Within 5 minutes the pain is completely gone. I may not be drinking enough water so i will give that a good try, but there is only one change in my diet recently and that is i have been taking liquid Glucosamine Sulphate suppliments for about 3 weeks. I Will return if i find any connection. or can offer any findings...

I went into this problem with the belief that fluids take different routes through your body depending on how you are laying. I lay on my stomach when I sleep. I noticed my urine was very yellow when I woke up in the morning despite me drinking lots of water. During the day though, my urine was clear.

To me, the water was cleaning a different part of my body while I slept than it did during the day.

The problem started happening for me when I would drink alcohol or soda before bed. I stopped doing this and spent a couple of nights drinking huge amounts of water before going to sleep. Sure I had to go to the bathroom a lot, but after a couple of nights, I was fine and the pain after I slept went away.

I hope this method works out for others.

Hi there,
I'm just now realizing that this could be my kidney's. I've gone to the doctor several times for this pain. Same thing as everyone else: 2 or 3 in the am the pain starts. Toss and turn to find a comfortable position...then really hurts when I breath in and take a deep breath; a really sharp stabbing pain.
Finally, get up, go to the bathroom and it feels better.
I've gone to the doctor and they never diagnosed it correctly. I didn't even think it was my kidney until recently and that's when I started looking up "kidney pain" on the internet. I also started keeping tabs on what I drink and how much and it definitely occurs more when I drink alcohol and caffeine. So, thanks to all you posters who contributed your stories and experiences. I think I may have finally figured out the problem and the solution. :-D

I too have the same symtoms all of you have described. I've been to countless doctors with diagnosis that were wrong. I've had all kinds of blood, urine, ulltrasound, and ct's done. First Dr. found I had H. Pylori I was treated for that and the pain never went away. Apparently H.pylori causes ulcers that have similar symptoms to what I was experiencing. I had the breatj test done after I was treated and it showed the H.Pylori was gone but my night/morning pain was still there. It is always pain at night/morning it wakes me up, hurts when I take a deep breath then I get up go pee and the pain disipates and I'm pain free for the day. It is so frustrating. I have had this for about five years now. Most recently I had a really bad night with the abdominal side pain and the Dr had me do a CT scan. It showed that my appendix was inflamed. I went to an awful surgeon who said nothing was wrong with me. I decided to get a second opinion and this surgeon admitted me to have a second CT scan. On this scan my appendix looked fine but the right side of my pelvis was full of fluid. He admitted me to the hospital and I had my appendix removed. Turned out I had chronic appendicitis which is rare. I though all my health problems had been solved and I could finally move on with my life and all this weird pain was caused by my appendix. Wrong, less than a week later I was awakened with that all to framiliar pain in the early morning. I've almost given up and surrendered to the fact that I am going to have to live with this the rest of my life. While I'm a good sleeper I now dread going to bed in fear of waking up in pain. It is like Russian roulettes! I don't have the pain every night but most nights so every night I just hope it will be pain free. I've noticed the pain is worse/more intense around my periods but I've been checked by a gyno and it isn't anything in that department. I've tried everything food monitoring, diet restrictions, accupuncture, yoga seeing countless Dr's. I am 26 and over and over again tests come back negative and the Dr just looks at me like I'm crazy because I don't look sick. I wish there was a way I could be observed while I was having the pain maybe that would shed some light to Dr.'s. This has affect my life in so many ways I'm constantly tired from waking up in pain. I feel like no one understands what I'm going through. I have an amaizing fiancee that is very understanding but at this point I think he doesn't know how to be supportive so I've just stopped talking about it. It is very had to express to him that I wake up most mornings in pain when every Dr says I'm fine and healthy. I am constantly searching the internet to figure out what I can do to make this pain stop. Has anyone found a way to treat this or a diagnosis that helped?

Well a quick update. I finally heard back from the docs office and was told that the ultrasound was normal, my blood tests were all normal, and that my kidneys were functioning correctly. However, in my 24hr urine sample, I had elevated levels of protein. Next step is to a kidney specialist.

I found this forum googling , and was amazed that some of the post could have been written for me
50 years old, Pain in the left kidney area if sleep longer than 7 hours ,which is fine during the week but as I have needed 8 hours for as long as I can remember , catching up at the weekend is an issue...
Pain killers and a walk around for 15 minutes usually gives me enough respite to get another 3hours sleep, but its far from ideal.

I noticed that there are a number of posts from people for whom something has worked but none from anyone who has tried another persons "cure" and had success too

I does seem a little pointless going to the GP though.....

I smoke 10 a day, don't drink, do drink coffee, avoid diary where possible and am on meds for Cholesterol and BP.

I think I will start with the Vit D supplements

Hi everyone, I hope nobody has given up yet. I have the same condition and I can tell that the answer is so close. If there was just a doctor with a brain and some expertise that could see this, I know it would be so clear. Here is what I've come up with so far, as far as a summary goes:

Symptoms
Pain in kidney area while lying
Sharp pain upon deep intake of breath (in severe cases)
Often misdiagnosed as muscle pain in lower back
Pain sometimes persists slightly throughout day as dull ache
Protein in urine (not necessarily always the case)

Symptom Qualifiers
Pain increases with time while lying
Pain increases when lying on side
Pain is worse with alcohol/coffee consumption
Pain recedes relatively quickly after standing up (and urinating)
Pain is less when knees and/or back is propped up

Possible Causes
Kidney infection
Chronic appendicitis
-Chronic dehydration
Glomerulonephritis
IGAN:
*Blocked urethra
Urine flowing back to kidneys
-Too much calcium (from supplements)
Stress
*Citric acid clearing through kidneys (sensitivity)
Adrenal fatigue

Parasites

*At least one person has found relief after treating these conditions.
-At least one person has found that these were not the causes for them.

Possible Remedies
Drinking *lots* of water
Vitamin D (initial worsening followed by easing of symptoms)
Cut out caffeine from diet
Getting lots of exercise

If I've left anything off the list, someone please add it. I should note that in my case I recently developed a possibly related condition--a constant sensation of needing to urinate. I am going to see a naturopathic doctor soon and will take this list to him. If we figure anything out, I will definitely post it. In the mean time, I would recommend to anyone with this condition to drink a TON of water, cut out caffeine from your diet, and try getting more exercise. I can't recommend vitamin D, but it may help some people. [/url]
