I'm only 16 and I'm having crazy blood clots too.
My friend is on her way, and we're going to see a doctor.
Most of my symptoms point to a miscarriage..
I'm scared.

It could be a miscarriage from the way you're describing your symptom. A regular period sometimes has large jelly-like globs that looks like clots, but really it's just tissue. I'd definitely check with your doctor.

Hi Pepsifreak, can you help me out a little with this? A friend of mine has the same problem but why is it not a big deal? She's concerned and I'd like to be able to help her but I don't know what's normal. Could you tell me what it is? Why is it normal? Is it because of birth control? Help me out! Thanks!

I went to Target this afternoon to buy tampons and while walking across the store I felt my period come on HEAVY. I rushed to the ladies room but had already bled on my pants. When I pulled my pants down in the stall a large clot, bigger than both of my hands, fell out of my panties and onto the floor. It was so gross and embarrassing. I don't have a gyno but plan to call for an appointment tomorrow. There is no chance of pregnancy, does anyone know what this might be? I am kind of freaked out.

I have been bleeding for the past 8 weeks - i have always suffered heavy periods but never had the clots and cramoing as bad as this weekend, I ended up being admitted to hospital for pain relief and control of the bleeds. If you are filling a tampon or towel every hour for more than 3 hours you should contact nhs direct in the uk or your dr in the us as it is classed as too much bleeding, Ive now been referred for an emergency app with the gyn.
ALl i would say is go to the Dr it could be something as small as just heavy periods to things like cancer of the cervix. Its always better to be safer than sorry. xx

all of you probably are double positive for the MTHFR gene mutation. Ask your doctor to fun a lab test to check. Lifetime use of folate and B12 will be necessary. I have this same problem that I discovered through my childs medical problems, and I was also dimissed by my doc. You must take this seriously if you have it .

I'm 46 and my cycle now last two days if that. This month, Iv 'e been bleeding for six days. Not normal cause Iv 'e been cramping real bad and I don't even fill a tampon. On account of the cramping, I'm constantly checking. Two days ago, I went to change my tampon and a clot with tissue the size of my palm fell out. That did more than make me concerned. But I did nothing. Last night it happened again but the size of a half dollar. What's going on?

About four years ago when my mom was 46, she had her period for six weeks! I don't know how she let it go on that long, but she did. Anyway, for her she had polyps in her uterus. They weren't malignant but had to be removed surgically (they didn't even have to make any incisions, so that helped healing time!).
For me the only cramps I get are related to the endometrium shedding in clumps instead of just regular old liquid blood. I've always had irregular periods even with birth control, but the one thing that stays constant is the clots.
So your clots could likely just be blood clumped together with tissue and not a concern. But the heavier bleeding and prolonged period could signal that there is a problem. It's usually not the clots that are the concern, but what is causing them. If it doesn't go away and you'd rather not go to the doctor and have it be nothing, at least call your doctor/gyno and ask if it sounds like something that needs to be treated.
I hope you're doing better!

Understanding Menstrual Blood Clots
Clots are the natural result of the body functioning well. They are a natural way of controlling bleeding. When menstrual bleeding is heavy, clotting tends to occur. Experiencing menstrual clots can be upsetting. If the clots are large they can be painful and cause cramping as they pass through the cervix.
The following is a brief explanation as to why menstrual clots (often large clots) are formed. All blood contains a clotting factor. To enable menstrual blood to flow freely from the uterus and leave the body without clotting, the uterus produces an anti-clotting agent: plasmin. However, when menstrual loss is heavy, the anti-clotting agent may not be adequate for the menstrual period and the blood is likely to form clots. Additionally, if menstrual blood accumulates faster than the body’s ability to transfer it out of the uterus, clots can result.
More technically . . .
Fibrin is a protein that creates a blood clot by forming a network of trapped red blood cells and platelets.
Plasmin is an enzyme that digests or breaks down fibrin. In general, menstrual blood clots form when there is an slight imbalance between fibrin (builds) and plasmin (breakdown

It sounds like you might just be prone to heavy periods although I'm not entirely sure. I think that it would be a good idea to get a second opinion if you want because you might want to be extra sure on this. Is that something you'd be able to do easily?
