I know this thread is old, but I have the same problem when I go to sleep and sleep on my left side. After sleeping about 4 hours I can finally roll onto my left side without the gas problem. And the gas just moves up and down my windpipe and makes sounds as if I'm belching, but I don't actually burp - it drives me nuts. The problem, however, isn't only when I sleep. I work overnights (8pm-6am), and I have the same problem with gas AUDIBLY moving up and down my windpipe from about 11pm until I leave work at 6am. It's terribly, terribly, embarrassing because I cannot control it and am on the phone or dispatching over the radio the entire night! I haven't found a solution :(
