Cut out salt and sugar?! SALT?! If u have addisons disease and are on hydrocortisone because of lack of cortisol due to adrenal glands not working then ur consultant should of told u that u need to increase ur salt in ur diet. Its very dangerous to cut it out or eat to little
Hi my doctor prescibed 20,4 and 4 daily. My body produces no cortisol at all. Most days though I only take 20. Since starting this drug I have put on approx 20kg over a few years. Just recently I didn't have the money for my mrds and didn't have them for over a few weeks During this time I have lost around 10kg. I eent back on them a day ago and put on 1kg. So I don't think it is because they are taking too much.
What's your dosage?
DON'T CUT SALT!!!! If you have low cortisone you actually need MORE salt!!1
I have primary Addison's disease, and was diagnosed 3 years ago. I initially was put on hydro-cortisone and my body blew up. I had swelling in areas I never had before. My ankles work twice their size. After a short period of time, while eating healthy, I told my doctor I refuse to take this. It was helping one problem, but creating new ones for me. He switched me to prednisone and it's been a huge difference. The weight came right off, my energy came back, and my numbers leveled off. So in my opinion you just have to see what works with your body, and what your body will tolerate. No one can compare one case to the next. This disease is very tricky and you have to know your body and how to manipulate it and treat it right. When needed I stress dose, but all in all, I feel like my old self again.
i lost my andernal glands last year my weight keeps going up I went from 20mg in the morning and 10mg in the afternoon to 15mg in the morning and 7.5 in the afternoon still having problems
I have Addisons deiese AND AM GAINING WEIGHT WHY IT SAYS YOU LOOSE WEIGHT IM 191 AND DICUSTINGLY FAT. iV NEVER BEEN THIS HEAVEY IN ALL MY LIFE, cAN YOU PLEASE HELP ME WITH AN ANSWER! mY arms are big as well as my legs, They look like tree trunks.
My doctor told me way too many doctor's prescribe WAY TOO MUCH Hydrocortisone. Those of you on more than a total of 10mg a day should get a 2nd opinion. It's for your own good. Find a doctor who specializes in your condition.
I have Exactly all those same problems and I've gained 30 pounds in four months
I don't know if you'll see this reply, but thank you. Your situation most closely mirrors my own. I am going to be 56 next week. Two years ago, I went through my own private hell for 3 1/2 months not knowing what was going on. LSS: primary Addison's. I used to be an actress/singer/dancer with a blessed body type and for years consistently weighed between 118 and 123 (idea for my 5'4" frame). After being prescribed Cortef, I went from 108 (because I had been so sick/muscle wasting) to 118 in 2 months, then up to 128 in about six more weeks, then up to 140 by June. I was only taking 17.5 mg through the day (my doc said if I maintained that amount, I wouldn't gain weight; however, she quit the practice, and I had no one with whom to consult after that). We had to sell our house and move (twice) in six months. My body underwent all kinds of stress, so WHILE TAKING 17.5 mg of Cortef daily, I had 4 bouts of full-blown adrenal crisis in 5 months. Country doc in new state said I basically just need to "up" my dosage of the Cortef. I'm not taking 22.5 mg daily and have gained even more weight. I'm at 159 currently. I feel like such a fat toad compared to what I used to be. I also have compounded for me meds to treat hypothyroidism (which I have dealt with for 25 yrs.). I pray (literally) to be healed and delivered of this accursed disease so that I can get off these meds, which, for now, I obviously need to take or I experience adrenal crisis. It's a trap. Any other advise or counsel you can share would be appreciated. Blessings.
The cortisone is only taken to replace what the body can't produce. So normal rules apply. The body runs on fat or glucagen, and what determines that is insulin, the higher the insulin level the more that's stored as fat, and what what raises that is sugar and carbohydrates. If you want to lose weight you have to burn fat. To do this cut out carbs and sugar and eat proteins fats and green leafy vegetables . I've Addison for the last 14 years and I'm lighter than when symptoms first occurred.
Hello, I am with you in praying for healing, as that is the best answer of all, but until that time, I too have recently started taking hydrocortisone for severely low cortisol levels. I do feel some energy now and not like I'm sick, but I can already tell within just a couple weeks it will be a challenge to maintain my previous healthy weight. Stress has taken its toll on us all, and now we must rest and take care of ourselves as best we can with the hope our bodies start working right again and we are not dependent on these medications. Let me know if you get healed, or if you learn any new solutions for managing one's weight while on the hydrocortisone. Blessings
Thank you, that is excellent advice! I will take it to heart. Blessings!
