I feel for you guys! This problem ruined my last Christmas because I was sure I had throat cancer and was afraid to go to the doctor and ruin everybody else's holidays.
The bottom line is that they aren't really sure what causes this problem. They think it's acid reflux in most cases but, definitely, it's in the soft tissue. It's like you get a lot of phlegm trapped in the swelling in your throat. They recommend you take prilosec for a couple of weeks and see if that helps. They say that it's probably acid even if you don't think you have that problem.
By the time I got to the doctor, I had a terrible case of bronchittis and that wasn't helping anything with all the coughing. The doctor gave me a week's worth of steroids and it completely went away. I feel it a little bit once in a while now, but not enough to really bother me.
I do suggest you go on to the doctor to rule out anything else, but it probably is just exactly what I had. Don't worry. Just go and take care of it. Good luck to you!

Hello, I know this post is old, but I am having similar symptoms. I was just wondering if anyone found out what was causing this problem?

Hello,
I have this wierd feeling as well. I feel the need to burp and sometimes i do fill like there is air in my stomach. I will give you a brief history about myself:
I am a hypochondriac - so that means I do get worried a lot. This 'lump' is killing me as i am getting more depressed. I want to go to the doctor, but then i'm afraid they will find something terminal; but at the same time -- I want to know what it is!
Also suffered from asthma as a child, allergic to dust as a kid, had nose surgery having broken it in a rugby game.
Anyway, so i started to do some research as to when i feel this lump.
1) I usually feel it around Dec/Jan. I live in Australia and during this period (Dec and Jan) there is a lot of rain and then heat (quite humid). It does get cold in patches as well.
2) This sensation also comes after being in an air conditioned room/ place or airplanes.
3) I drink energy drinks and soft drinks (coke zero and sweetened water) a lot - and sometimes i do feel it then.
4) Red meat.
5) The biggest one of all - I WORRY a LOT. Constantly thinking I will die of some. Its frustrating because you feel 'alone'.
PROPOSED SOLUTION:
I will be cutting anything with caffeine in it. All soft and energy drinks and coffee. I am also going to cut red meat from my diet. I will drink at least 2-3 litres a day (that i believe will take care of the air conditioning problem).
Then I will report back at the end of the week as to how my test went.
If anyone out there has anything in common with me in the list above, please try my proposed solution with me and report back on your findings.
Last but not least, there is one thing in common here: we all have some anxiety issues. Lets try not to worry much (I know its a bit rich coming from me), do some exercise and relax.

WOW, can stress and anxiety cause such a thing....I want out!!! Especially the feeling of needing to swallow what's in my throat....
