Daily Nexium fixed it for me. I don't want to be on medication but I couldn't live with that.

I have stumbled across this post whilst googling my symptoms. I have previously had thyroid cancer and these symptoms frighten me. My voice is husky, I have sudden onset of a spasm (or something) where I can't swallow, burning, cough and a very bloated belly. I gave up dairy and wheat to combat it, but my last bubba was born now 2yo and I have weight no weight despite raw vegan diet :-( I am scared its oesophageal cancer. I can't do another cancer I have 3 small boys that need me!
pick have just done the h pylori test dowdy and have to wait a week for answers, being of reflux meds was bad...hopefully being back on them I will get my voice back.

I also have GERD and have noticed some interesting things. Rather than taking medication and insisting on eating your barely healthy favorite foods, it's better to figure out what works for you and to go from there. The diet changes (although annoying) are all healthy in the first place, so you will be better for it in the end.
As to what causes it there are numerous things. Personally I suggest eating a really really basic diet of acceptable vegetables and fruits and making note of what does and doesn't work for you, then trying to find out what the cause might be based on what doesn't work. I'm not going to lie and say I've found a cure for myself, but I believe we all have very different triggers for the underlying problem that makes this happen in the first place so any cure I found for myself wouldn't apply for most other people.
The only universal non-medical thing I've found that helps in addition with a healthy diet is ginger tea. Other than that you need to figure out your triggers and go from there, it sucks but that's life and unless it a serious illness you CAN cure it.
No matter what you do though do not take medication and keep eating trigger foods no matter how much you may like them. If it's hard to give up your favorite foods then ask yourself a very important question, do you care more about how things taste or your over all health? I've forced myself to eat my trigger foods for awhile and got to the point where it felt like I had strep throat from the stomach acid coming up. I've been eating better for a few weeks now and trust me, giving up taste for not burning my throat every day is well worth it. As a benefit when you eat healthier you notice subtle tastes you aren't accustomed to and never forget that you CAN cure the cause of GERD but you need to look for it and not focus on GERD, which is a symptom.
If you play the medication game you will never find the cause of your GERD.

I have similar problems as everyone here. The nausea is bad, but I can live with it. It's the food that gets stuck in my throat that gets me really worried. Sometimes it feel like it's my last minutes on earth. The only meds that worked was something like, meticorten, which is basically a type of steroid. So in the long run it is very bad for you. But the only thing that helps and that I can advise others to do is to find an intensive endurance activity. I am a cyclist and I have found that my symptoms start to fade once I am really fit. As soon as I stop training the symptoms come back. It could be the natural endorphins that does the trick. So good luck to everyone who is suffering from gerd. I really hope they get meds soon and until then you just have to make the lifestyle changes and live with it the best you can.

I have had stomach problems and digestive issues for almost 10 years. I have tried everything and seen tons of doctors. I have been on perscriptions for aciphex, and other acid type drugs, plus also digestive drugs. Told it was IBS, then Chrons, I have some celiac in my family and many of them have taken the celiac test and told they do not have it, and once they went gluten free had relief. Then later a test would confirm it, so we found many of the test are not accurate.
About 3 months ago, I started with the lump in my throat, and knew that it was my stomach problems returning after not having anything for about 3 years. I had cured it mostly through raw food, no dairy, little gluten. And over time I was able to add back in the food I loved. But this time ie returned and the lump was so bad I could not eat or drink anything.
I started searching for an answer why it came back and what could have happened. Over the last few weeks I have come to realize that all the pills and diet and everything that doctors had told me to do is really the problem. I have learned that it is not to much acid that I have, but the opposite, to little acid. This is why I was not digesting, my food was not getting broken down. So even though the medicine might give some relief it was only making it worse.
I found a few doctors online who had suggestions and they are working! For the first time ever, no pain, I can eat and I even have more energy. I even noticed my hair was growing alittle. My hair and nails have not has any strength in years.
I know this post is old, but I swore if I ever found any solutions that work for me I would share them. And because I know I have gone on for years in pain, I am sure some people may also still be suffering.
This is what I am doing, you have to find what works for you. I am doing probiotics in the morning on an empty stomach, now also adding yogurt, kefir and kombucha in my day. I am using HCL with pepsin with every meals. I am only taking 2-3, I have heard of some peole taking more. Also a few other supplements. I dont want to give out a whole bunch of links where I started learning what to take and so on. So just google "HCL with pepsin for GERD (or acid reflux)" I am sure you will see how it works and how to test to see if you also have low acid.
Not sure why doctors would not know this. But a few simple supplements while I eat, and I can build my stomach health up again. So much better than any drugs, but the best part is I have no pain and it works.

Yours sounds like an hiatal hernia, there is no MEDS that really help. WATCH your food intake. NO fatty foods. NO
spicy foods. Eat small amounts and healthy. Drink tea SLOWLY. Be very careful what you put in your mouth and it will disapate over time. IT HAS THE CAPACITY TO RETURN MANY TIMES. SLOW your eating habits down.

Hello Kumar, thanks for the post. I have been feeling exact thing as you described, and an addition to that, I start having short breath often. Does acid reflex contribute to the shortness of breath?
