Lymphadenopathy represents swelling of the lymph nodes. lymph nodes are bean-shaped organs found in the underarm, groin, neck, chest, and abdomen that act as filters for the lymph fluid as it circulates through the body. Lymphadenopathy can occur in just one area of the body or in several areas. The common site is in the neck. When there is an infection of some sort, infection-fighting cells and fluid accumulate and the lymph nodes enlarge. Enlarged lymph nodes are often near the source of infection and their location can help determine the cause of the swelling.
