Has anyone had any success treating their pouchitis with mesalamine, perhaps with Pentasa, Asocol or even sulfasalazine? I know it is used successfully with cuffitis. What about pouchitis? In the paper I’ve read, mesalamine is mentioned as a potential successful treatment of pouchitis. However, it hasn't been tested except for suppositories with some success. Would it hurt to try mesalamine, given that Cipro has such bad long term side effects? Both my surgeon and my gastro doctor are reluctant to try it. I tolerated sulfasalazine quite well.

I have had a persistent case of pouchitis for the past 4 months (my takedown was July).
It just seems that mesalamine is worth a try. Maybe I can avoid the bad joints and snapped tendons; it is mine long term side effects of Cipro. If it doesn't work then I can continue with the Cipro and if it works, perhaps I've saved my joints and tendons. I’ll ask my doctor on the next check, I'm meeting with my gastro doctor this week.
