My wife had the IUD put in right before easter and we couldn't even tell that it was in. Couldn't feel the strings at all. Then a week later we were having sex and I could feel something inside of her. It felt like I was hitting the bottom of a post. Not strings. When I tried to feel what I was hitting with my finger it felt like the post and I couldn't even feel any strings at all. I don't know if that was the bottom of the IUD and the strings came off of it or what. My wife goes in tomorrow to the doctor to see what is up.

I'm 25 and I've had my iud for about 10 months and it's awesome.

When it was first inserted (inserted in the hospital in day surgery under general anaesthetic because never had vaginal delivery) I had bleeding (frank blood) for a couple of days because they have to open your cervix to put it in, then for the first month or so I had spotting but since then I haven't had any trace of a period at all- which is awesome. The spotting was minimal, really no impingement on my day to day life (and I live in Australia where it's always bikini weather).

It's reliable (higher success rate than fallopian tube ligation for preventing pregnancy) and I have cramping sometimes, but apparently it's because you still ovulate and the cramps are worse because I'm not on the pill anymore (I was on the pill for 9 years before). My husband- who is fairly large- has maybe felt the strings 2 or 3 times ever. Rarely I get pain on sex, a sharp pain but I also had that before I went on the IUD- I must admit that I was quick to blame the iud even though I had it before.

Bottom line- mirena is definitely one of the best things I've ever had done. Maybe I got lucky with having a great Dr- the ob/gyn is the one who put it in and performed a follow-up exam 8 weeks after. I don't have to use condoms, worry about the unreliability of the birth control pill (I wouldn't exist if that was 100%), worry about having back-up birth control such as condoms, and get periods anymore. L.o.v.e. it.

I just feel like whenever you review anything the internet gives you unbiased results, because the happy people very rarely will go seek out a place to advertise their satisfaction with a product. Best of luck with everything, but just make sure you educate yourself BEFORE you get anything done. If your doctor doesn't listen to you, find another doctor and take some responsibility for your own health.

I think that your decision to have it removed is a good idea. Are you going to be going back to regular birth control after this? I think that a lot of women report issues with the ring and I'm glad that you're getting rid of it. Let me know how it goes okay?

This doesn't help. My gf and I have been sex free for a while to see if it would help, I just had sex a few days ago after waiting roughly a month (its been 3 months since the IUD was put in btw), and I am getting the same pain on my penis. While I do know that rough sex usually leads to discomfort, I rarely have caused interior bleeding with just my penis. I think that the IUD is scratching my tip up and that after bashing it around it is moving and scratching her vagina. I'll have her go to the doctor soon, but I have to ask everyone, its during"doggy style" that the pain is worse, because she's been on top and that didn't cause any pain...

Actually Guest what you've posted on does sound pretty likely. Is there any way you could get the IUD looked at to make sure that it's in there properly? And if not, do you think that your girlfriend would consider a different form of birth control. Let me know!

Hello, I am very worried as well. I just got the Mirena about 2 weeks ago. I dont have any children and no history of medical complications like cysts or infections. Me and my boyfriend of 2 years have always had enjoyable sex. But now the pain is unbearable. In positions that are usually very comfortable, theres a pain similar to hitting my cervix, which is rather annoying. Also, I get ransom sharp pains in my abdomen when im not even having sex which isnt very pleasant either. Is it possible the doctors put my iud in wrong and its stabbing me on the inside or am I getting these pains because im a smaller framed individual or what? Can anyone help me out?

I had my mirena coil fitted this week. i hated the actual fitting it hurt like hell! reminded me of my labour pains. i stopped bleeding the next day and have had no other bleeding since. i have had the odd cramping pains but nothing major. my partner and i have had sex with no major problems. i had a bit of cramping afterwards which if you think your whole uterus and cervix muscles contract and dilate during sex especially if the woman reaches orgasm if your body is still adusting to having something in there that's probably very normal. my partner did complain a while after that his tip was a bit sore but he didn't actually feel it getting scratched but i was warned some people complain they can feel it in the first few months before the strings soften. its a shame the feedback is all negative because i know loads of women that have mirena and had done for years i know some on their second and third coils also and have never had any major problems.

Well, I would say that it works really well for some people and works badly for others. There's a reason why so many types of birth control are out there because otherwise it would not work out as well for some people. I'm glad to hear that it works well for you though!

My wife has Mirena and she has had spotting for 3 months now, which pretty much limits the sex.
In addition to that, she has had to have the strings trimmed TWICE now because it is scratching me when we have sex.
After this, it is still scratching me so I am investigating other options, because I can't bear to have something scratching the end of my penis while I am in the act.

That's unusual nad yeah I would say that it's a big problem. Have you ever considered plain pills? I think that they are still the most effective birth control if you're looking into options. What do you think?
