I have 3 kids, and have had an IUD with no problems before. My husband has noticed the poking a bit too. My doctor just sugested reaching up there and you can kind of tuck the strings up around your cervix. This seemed to help.

This time (after 3ed baby, all vaginal births) I got the Mirena. My husband is quit large and I am small so often sex hurts if he goes in too far and fast. I always asummed he was bumping my cervix and that was what caused the pain. Anyway I had light periods and then a heavy one all of a sudden. I just had an X-ray and they can see the IUD but it looks like its not in my uterus anymore. Today I had an ultra sound and that comfired it the IUD is not in my Uterus anymore but was poked out and is now floating around in my adboman somewhere. Looks like I'll have to have some surgry to remove it.

The radiologist said you can just leave it in there. She said sometimes women who have thier tubes tied the tubal clips fall off and they just leave them in there. I think its crazy that a T shaped thing can poke completly through your uterus! I had some menstral cramps but no extreme pain. Anyway I'm just waiting for my doc to get the ultra sound results and then we'll see.

Dear Tiffanie,

Your story is a lot like mine... I had the copper iud placed 2 years ago, but had so many problems with it I decided it was best to switch to the Mirena. I have been very happy for the past year with the infrequent and extremely light periods; a Godsend! Not to mention the piece of mind knowing I don't have to remember to take a pill every day! Like you, I have also had problems with bleeding and pain during intercourse, especially in certain positions. To me, it is somewhat embarrassing when having sex with a new boyfriend for the first time, to have to stop due to the pain and then only to find that I was bleeding too. GRRR! Very frustrating! As far as the guy complaining of poking and scraping, that happened with my first IUD, easily fixed by trimming the strings on your IUD. If only there was more info about the pain and bleeding during intercourse. I guess I'm just happy to know I'm not alone! Thanks for posting Tiffanie, I hope you get some answers! (:

I had my IUD placed February 8th and the insertion was HORRIBLE. Given, I'm only 19 and I've never had children. I cramped for two days with no spotting. At all. And then about 7 days after my insertion, the pain was intolerable. I went and saw my gyn who ran every test in the book. I got screened for pregnancy, std's, pelvic ultrasound, transvaginal ultrasound and a pelvic exam...
Needless to say, the IUD was placed correctly and I "shouldn't have any pain". The gyn sent me home with some narcotics for pain and a slap on the back, basically.
Now today, I'm sitting here in a terrible amount of pain. Everytime my husband and I have sex, it's not painful during but he can feel the strings. Not so much of a poke, but a rubbing feeling. And I bleed the next day! Ugh.
People say you have to give it 6 months and then you'll love it. Wellllllll.. idk about that. I'm worried about the amount of pain I'm in though :/ Hmph.

I just want to remind everyone reading this forum that while some people have negative experiences with IUDs, many (many) others have good experiences, which is why the device exists. I have had an almost entirely positive experience with my Mirena and so have many others. I think it's a birth control option that should be made more available to many women, as it's stress free after (and if) your body adjusts to it. This is not a plug, but I got a lot of my information from the IUD divas livejournal community, and I'd like anyone considering an IUD to check out that forum as it has a wealth of information both positive and negative that can help you make a better decision.

I have the same IUD and Im 18 and have had it for about a year and I never understood why sex hurt so badly. Im not sure why but I never linked the pain and the IUD together until now. Some people say the pain only gets worse the longer you keep it in...is this true? Im so young and I dont wanna hate sex so should I get this taken out?

First of all I'm glad to actually finally hear that I'm not the only one going through this. I've had my IUD since last may and since the moment I've had it put in I've had problems. These problems range from bad cramping to sometimes constant pain in my lower sides, spotting after and during sex, EXTREMELY painful sex to the point where it's unbearable to even think of sex, my husband says he feels it quite often and it hurts alot for him when he does feel it, and etc. I've always contemplated having it removed cause of this but my doctor has always reassured me that my symptoms were not from my IUD, but in reading this I'm making an appt. Monday and getting this thing out!! I want to have another child and in researching and reading this, this thing could cause sterilization if it becomes embedded and I'm not waiting around to find out if it will. As well I would LOVE to have my wonderful sex life with my husband back! Thanks guys for all the info and help!!

DO NOT GET THIS THING PUT IN!!!! I really wish I would have done more research before I got mirena put in.

First of all, I have not had any children so I knew there would be a little pain but whoever was under anethesia when they put yours in I could not be any more jealous. I had to go in twice seperately to have mine put in because the pain was so unbearable the first time, the second time they gave me valium but it was still incredibly painful.

I have an extremely high pain tolerance but I have unbearable cramping to the point where I feel like I am going to pass out. I have not experienced abnormal bleeding but have had breast tenderness which is weird because my breasts have been um...enhanced

In addition my partner refuses to have sex with me anymore because it stabs him when he is inside of me. We are usually a very sexually active couple, at least once a day, and not to be dramatic but this no sex thing is litterally ruining my life.

The whole insertion of mirena for birth control has become obsolete because i'm not even having sex anymore because he refuses, however since it cost like 700$ i'm not really interested in taking it out quite yet.

I think it is ludicris that they do not have any warnings on the website or pamphlets about barbs stabing the penis during sex I would have never gotten it put in knowing that it would do that, on top of my dr not mentioning anything either.

I am NOT HAPPY.

This is my 2nd Mirena the first I had to have removed within 6 months. I gave it a 2nd chance after my 2nd child was born and still the same issues. Sex became painful after I started having cysts at age 25. The pains differ from when it is a cyst opposed to when it is the Mirena. I presume if you have a lover who is never excited or has a penis about 3-4 inches long then the Mirena should ROCK for you but larger men will be poked and hopefully it doesn't poke a hole in your condoms during those safe sex episodes.
