I have the same issue with my boyfriend, he didn't know what it was a first and apparently didn't bother him too much. He said it hurt a bit, but he just changed "positions" and we don't have the problem anymore. The only way for your husband, boyfriend, etc to not get hurt is just to change positions. This may sound funny, but if your have missionary intercourse make sure he's directing his "member" to the left or right when he's inside. The string is straight up in the direction he's be "going".

I have had my mirena since april 2008. We were leaving the country for 2 years and I didn't want to take a chance having a baby outside of the US. I went last week to have it removed, after a terribly painful 45 min of "digging" for it with a hook. I had an ultrasound to find out the strings have either been lost or are stuck inside. I now have to go to the hospital to have this awful thing removed. I really wish I had never done this.

I had my Mirena put in after the birth of my daughter..It was fine at first but after a year..I started getting horrible pains in my stomach and my fiance was complaing that intercourse was painful because he was getting poked. I went into my doctor and they did remove it and since then..I havent had no pains..no cramps and no getting poked. I like my mirena but something was causing the pains and I couldnt stand putting my fiance through the poking. I wish everyone the best of luck and go with your gut instict if it dont feel right..GO TO YOUR DOCTOR!

I've had my Mirena for a little over 4 months now, and I LOVE it. I read as much on it as I could before I got it and I was SUPER paranoid about the strings hurting my boyfriend. I got it anyway, and it hasn't been an issue once!! The strings have even bent up backwards and are tucked behind my cervix so I can only feel them when I'm looking for them with my fingers.
For the first 2 months though I'm not going to lie, I had break through bleeding (steadily, but not heavy) and cramping (about as bad as period cramps, but only for about ten minutes a day and it was usually in the evening when I was relaxing). I was getting a little frustrated, but then the cramps and break through bleeding stopped and I haven't had my period for the past 2 months. I think 2 months of mediocre discomfort is well worth the 5 years it will prevent me from pregnancy.

As a husband, I can tell you those strings do not soften, and they are extremely painful in a sensitive area! Today my wife is in for an ultrasound, because during a regular OBGYN visit, they couldn't find the Mirena device. I am hoping this doesn't mean surgery, and I am beginning to wonder after reading all the horror stories about getting them out, if a class action lawsuit is order.

so yeah, i have just recently gotten mirena after having my first kid. yeah, i have the string problems as well as you guys. pretty bad when ever im on top. and sometimes they poke me and i can feel them when i walk. but my main problem with this thing is that mucous plug seems to not be able to form back. its almost like at the end of my pregnancy, almost every time i use the bathroom there is more loss of it. and i just dont understand what could be doing it, if its the strings or the hormones or what. i dont have insurance and i cant afford to pay out of pocket to go to my obgyn, so if any of you have had this problem then could you advise me with what you learned from your doctor? after reading all of the reports on here i am really wishing i had chose another method for birthcontrol..... even tho pills are out of the question for me, i cant remember to take them.
but please, someone get back to me that would be great. thanks.

OMG I didnt think that people were having all these problems. I've had my Mirena for about a year now and I just started having problems. When me and my fiance are having sex I feel extreme pain, where it seem to be coming from my uterus. This is very unusual. I really dont know what to do.

We did. But we're in Canada, and since the doctors here get paid per visit, regardless of whether they actually do anything, he didn't really care.

Hi, I,ve had the mirena a little over a year and my spouce had the same problem with the stings poking him. He developed a sore THERE. And since I've had the strings trimmed It's better but hes still very hesitant to go there. Plus I can't seem to lose weight and my moods are going waco. anybody else???? The doc said that these things didn't occur with this BC. But since its got horemones in it I automatically think that it has a lot to do with it. I get irritated very easily and I used to be very laid back. what do you all think.
