I had my first Mirena the whole 5 years allowed and never had a single problem with it.  I immediately had another one put in when the first was removed.  It is almost 3 years to the day that I had the second Mirena.  I noticed a few months ago that I felt a prickly sensation when I would move in certain ways - wasn't sure what it was.  Then I started getting spotting between periods here and there, and my periods were getting heavier and longer.  Finally made an appointment for this morning to have the Mirena checked.  It turns out that one of the strings had somehow curled upward and had weaved itself into my cervix!!!  My dr said that if I'd waited another month or two, they wouldve had to do surgery to remove it.  She said in all her years of experience with the Mirena, I am the first patient she's ever seen with this happen.  She wants me to wait a week to let the poked tissue rest a bit, then come back and have a new one put in. While in the office, she seemed so unconcerned about it, I figured I'd go back in a week and get the one.  Now I'm not so sure.  I never had a partner say they could feel it, so that's not an issue, but having another string get stuck somewhere worries me!

My Daughter got the mirena after my Grandson was bor and has had nothing but trouble. They could never fimd the string, she's had multiple cysts, pain where she was doubling over. She finally had it removed. Sad part is that she got pregnant recently and had a miscarriage. You cabn take this form of birth control and stick it.

I am so glad I found this post. I didn't believe my boyfriend when he complained that something was pinching him. He has complained about it for the past month even said that it cut him up, made him bleed and caused scabs. I schedule an appointment today to have it removed. Hopefully there will be no complications...

Hi well I've had mine for a about a yr already. My husband never complained until one day I asked him if he felt my Mirena, he had said no so we continued normally but after I told him maybe 2 times later he started saying he could feel it. He said it doesn't hurt it just rubs n it makes him orgasm faster... Idk if any of u have suggestions on what I should do I really don't want to take it off n he is allergic to most condoms..

You are not alone! Mine can actually feel a hard piece of "plastic".. I went back to my Gynecologist and he said all was "normal". In addition, I have heavy bleeding for weeks at a time. I am now anemic,

what is the process to have the string cut?

The procedure is usually non invasive. All they do is dilate your uterus more than they would normally have to. It would be painful if you were awake, so they put you to sleep, and that is that. Doesn't even hurt after.

Hi,
I'm experiencing the same thing. I took a pregnancy test about a month ago after feeling nauseated for a few weeks and it said negative. But now I've noticed that my strings are much longer than before and I swear I've been feeling the mirena poke my tummy for the last couple of weeks.

What ended up being the matter with your mirena? Was it a side effect of falling out of place or were you pregnant?

Same thing happening to me.... Its my third year and the strings never felt so long. I had to try and find it but now i can feel it without much effort. It feels long... I was scared so made an appointment with a doc. She looked and said the strings looks long, maybe nobody trimmed. So i have ultrasound scheduled.
I try to feel it, hoping it will go back to the positionwhen it was inserted. But i can feel it... Like its just there inside my vagina. I dont like this feeling... I am scared. I dont want a baby. Ggrrrrr...

Is everything still okay? Was it cut too short?

i work in obgyn and had the same problem, you can get the strings cut so they are at the same level of your cervix opening

Forgive the intrusion on this forum but I would like to present a bloke's perspective on this! My wife first had a Mirena just over 6 years ago (yes it was in for 6 years. The GP blanched but was relieved to discover it was for heavy periods, not contraception) and it was apparent from the outset that I could feel the strings during sex. For the record it wasn't 'poking' and its not the ends of the strings that are the problem. In our case it turned out to be due to our 'geometry' as I will explain later (sorry for the detail but it is that sort of forum!). To solve the problem my wife had the external strings completely cut off which was marvellous until the time came to get it out. The GP couldn't do it with the fancy crochet hook and it required a gynaecologist, local anaesthetic (think needles) and some serious poking to remove it. I don't really want my wife to have to go through that again so right now we are back to the strings...

The next bit is very specific to us but might help others. I discovered while decoding the gynaecologist's discharge letter (phrases like 'well tolerated' meaning my wife didn't swear at her) a Wikipedia article (see 'Vaginal Fornix') that says (detail warning) 'During sexual intercourse in the missionary position, the tip of the penis reaches the anterior fornix'. Well it might do for most people but a combination of my 'shape' and my wife's tilted uterus means it doesn't for us and that is the source of the problem. The place that the strings lie means that they always sit between her cervix and my penis meaning that they rub during sex. I guess for most people they don't come into contact but for us they do every time. I'm pretty sure GPs and probably gynaecologists don't really deal in this level of detail. Incidentally my wife never feels the strings - I guess the cervix isn't that sensitive.

Right now we are just living with it - though if it becomes intolerable the strings will either have to go or be moved somewhere out of the way...

(Footnote: In all other respects my wife has found the Mirena to be brilliant. It fixed her heavy periods completely and doesn't seem to have had any other side-effects. I thought it was worth saying that as it's mostly people with negative experiences who post!)
